He talked about it on WEEI earlier today (around the 10 minute mark).

His prediction, for whatever it's worth, is that the Patriots should be able to get more than Atlanta got for Matt Schaub (two seconds + a two-spot jump in the first). He thinks that Pioli might well try to make a play for Cassel, but would also likely try to move down in the draft if he can.

He also suggested the possibility that the Patriots might try to trade Cassel for a swap of draft picks (e.g., Cassel and their first for the #3 overall), although he doesn't think it's likely (noting correctly that the Pats don't like picking that high, but also noting correctly that BB did quite well with SF's pick last year).

Of course, we did well with the SF pick after trading it down; regardless, if we could get what Atlanta got for Schaub I'd be thrilled so if we can get more . . .

Cassel stock is raising right now, but we have review certain things:
Minnesota: Brad Clueless (thanks walterfootball) is too stupid to see TJ is not the answer
KC: The 3rd overall selection is expensive and the 34th isn't enough for Cassel
DET: The Ford family (Andre Ware, Scott Mitchell, Joey Harrington, Kitna, Culpepper, McMahon . . . .)
TB: Cassel isn't old enough to be a Gruden's guy
CHI: Dreams with McNabb
:D

KC could, say, trade down to #7 or so. The #7 pick didn't work out too badly for New England last year. :D

On a more serious note, though, I could see the Pats taking KC's 2nd in 2009 and a conditional pick in 2010 (e.g., Cassel reaches the playoffs--which would probably mean something like a 9-game improvement--and the Pats get KC's 1st in 2010).

That seems to be not quite enough for Cassels value.
They should absolutely get a first round from somebody.

San Fran is 10th overall and we did good at #10 last year. Plus that would put Cassel in the NFC and since we just played the NFC West this year, we would not see him for a few years.

That's one of the two best fits, trade/draft value-wise.

The other is Detroit -- #20 + #33.

Those are trade packages which could make somebody go:

A. Is that cheaper than one would pay for a very top QB prospect in the draft?
B. How does Cassell compare in value to a top QB prospect in the draft?
C. Do salary considerations change the tentative inference from A&B?

and decide Cassell was a bargain compared w/ drafting a top-three QB.

I am beginning to think that Arizona, Carolina, and Philly might be the logical stops.

McNabb can't seem to get over his benching. Also, contrary to Donovan ballwashers, Philly does have acceptable weapons.

Who would you give the money to, young MC or 38 year old KW?

It's hard to believe Jake's playoff performance will go the wine/cheese route and get better with age.

I can't see a team giving up #10 for Cassel, but if they did, it'd be quite a heist.

Cassel would love to play in San Francisco. The Patriots made out

quite well the last time they traded a quarterback to San Francisco.

Brady

I think it depends on where SF thinks they are. They did go 5-4 after Nolan was fired and the NFC West is weak. Also, after years of disaster, they do need to do something in the right direction. Alex Smith isn't going to do that.

Also, they have a new stadium coming online. If the QB is holding them back, it could be well worth it.

Imagine the thoughts going through Cassel's mind as he ponders going from Ben Watson's drops to Vernon Davis' drops. He might just decide to retire....

When's the last time the Pats traded a QB to San Francisco? Was it Plunkett?

cassel to the chiefs for their 2009 2nd rounder and 2010 2nd rounder

Yes. Didn't work out well for San Francisco but later great for

Oakland.

Detroit's #20 & #33 is the one I was thinking. Just makes too much sense for Detroit which can take LT at #1 and then get their QB with those picks. Pats might have to throw in a later pick, but still I'd love that deal for NE who I think \really excels picking in the late first and for all intents and purposes would have late first rounders.

How about Tennessee for their #1. Collins contract is up.

except that cassel is part of the decision-making process on this and detroit would happen if only other options are not available

I wonder how much of a say Cassel will really get about the next team he's going to. And would he care if he's going to Detroit or not. Either way he's going to get a lot of money AND he'll be the starter!

Right. And with five picks in the first two rounds plus a likely highish Asante comp pick, the Pats shouldn't mind giving Detroit whatever later picks this year they want to retool. Heck, give them (almost) the whole draft after Round 2, comp picks aside. Maybe get one or the other conditional 2010 pick in return as part of the deal.
