didn't matter......after the way he looked in the BCS, the pats weren't going to use a 1st rounder on him anyway, and he wouldn't be there for them in round 2.......he was not the inside answer to match with mayo anyway

I'd hope the Pats FO would not make a sweeping judgment of a player based on his performance in one game. They aren't fans you know.

Even if you don't like Spikes, this sucks. I want more players in so we can get the best talent possible.

I thought there would be more underclassmen than usual about a week ago, now I think there will be significantly less than usual.

I think BOR said in another thread it was at 38, the average is 49. Maybe it reaches that average today or not. But the quality of underclassmen, and the general quality of the draft, still seems high.

I agree. There are a lot more star quality players in this draft then last years which had more quantity of solid players.

We'll be fine. It seems like this happens every year - people get excited about all the potential junior talent, and then a bunch of people stay. Last year a lot of folks were all discouraged when Maualuga went back to USC for his senior year - seemed like a golden opportunity to draft the perfect SILB at #7. We ended up getting some bum named Mayo who was projected to be a 2nd rounder at the time, and did ok.

A number of NFL-ready players have who were possible top-20 picks have decided to go back to school: Spikes, Gerald McCoy, Taylor Mays, and Jermaine Gresham. It's not clear that their draft status will improve with another year, much as Maualuga and Laurinaitis didn't likely improve their draft status over a year ago. It would obviously be nice to have more top talent come out and push other players down, but we should still be able to pick out the players that fit our system best. We might end up with a Mayo-like silver lining - losing out on someone we all wanted and ending up with a better player.

The first round players who returned to school will only affect the Pats first pick. For those who don't seem to understand, the presence of Spikes or anyone else projected inside #23, would push a good player closer to the Pats, sparking the Pats own interest, or another team's trade up interest.

I wasn't thrilled with the overall round one talent anyway. There's still a few prospects who fit the Pats, but I think the strength of the draft is later on, essentially playing into the Pats hands.

you can tell alot in one game.........and most of it has nothing to do on whether he had a good game or not......I didnt mean you personally, but you know what I mean

I thought Spikes wasn't Pats material and should stay another year. It does water the 1st round talent pool down but the Pats can move up if they want player-X as with every draft. Spikes made the right move, Maualuga made the wrong one last year, IMO.
