I'd like to see a safety and LB in round one if we have two picks. After that I think we could take a chance on a WR or O-Lineman. I guess I shudder at the thought considering Chad Jackson, but I suppose they've learned for the ticks to watch for in that regard.

If we get Min's #1 (#22?) and draft the defense we need, what would you guys think of getting Jeremy Maclin in Round #2? It's a WR, and I think he's projected low first round, but he sounds like a great complement across from Randy (and to ultimately replace him).

Another possibility is Percy Harvin, a receiving RB, but it doesn't sound like he'll ever fall to round #2.

NFLSCOUT.COM has Maclin at 13. Probably won't even fall to 22 or 23. Nothing against Percy personally. But, he seems like more of a rb than wr. An Eric Metcalf/D.Meggett/
KFaulk type. Not, a wr.

Yeah, I like Harvin, its hard not to like the guy, he was impressive in the bowl game, playing through an injury and playing well. He has an interesting versatility that I can see the Patriots taking advantage of.

The fact that he's a bit of a hybrid RB/WR player might work to his advantage, he wouldn't be asked to do the same things Chad Jackson was asked to do, and might have a better chance of succeeding as a Patriot as a clearly defined role player.

As for a pure receiver, I like Deon Butler, and he's going to be a late round guy. I want a small, quick guy. I trust them more in the draft. Quan Cosby looked good to me, and being an older guy I think actually fits the Pats for what they want.

EDIT: Comparing Harvin to Faulk works for me - one day Faulk will need a replacement (he has a few good years left), Harvin could be that replacement, it might be early to get him, but he can contribute in the meanwhile.

The Pats used some 2 RB sets this season. Can you imagine putting Faulk and Harvin in the backfield at the same time in a passing situation. LOL @ the linebackers that have to deal with that in coverage.

I'd rather see a pass-catching TE, like Coffman, in the second over a WR. Don't get me wrong, we could use another WR threat (I love Heyward-Bey), but I'd rather get Coffman in the door so he can get a year part-time and work on his blocking to be ready when Hands of Feet Watson heads out the door.

I see a lot of DeSean Jackson in Harvin. Yeah, he would probably help us. I mean, his absolute floor would be Bethel Johnson, right?

I'd be hesitant to draft any skill position(WR/RB) players on day one. They generally demand more $ & our history has been bust city.

Hold on while I wipe my eyes. That's funny stuff. Aidez-moi.

Yeah, I was thinking about DeSean Jackson when I was considering this guy.
If we had a third receiver with a third kind of way to threaten the field, that would be great news for the offense. Might slow Welker down to only a gazillion catches a year, but with Brady probably coming back, we've seen how deadly he is with great pass-catching options. But probably moot if he's going to be gone early anyway.

Deon looked good in the Rose Bowl. In the past, he had trouble getting off of the
line against a good cb. But, not many teams play us man. We chem them up. So,
he could be a good fit for us. I have PSU season tix and have seen a lot of him.
At first, he was used mainly as a deep threat. But, now has become a well-rounded
receiver. Will prob have a good shuttle time at the Combine.

I'm hoping Maroney has a big year for us in 09. If he doesn't, then we can look at rb.
But, I'd like to give him a shot if he's healthy to be the man. We're not going to realize
how good K.Faulk is until he leaves. Man, he comes up with clutch plays. Always seems
to get the 1st down. I can see Percy becoming more of that type of player than a
pure wr.

How about neither? The Pats need to focus on the defense again this year, with a slightly lesser focus on the O-line. Beyond that, BVA.

Now that would be a nightmare...for the opposition:D.

Three WR who I like, only Murphy in the second, right now are:

Louis Murphy, Florida. I thought he looked good in the bowl game and with his size and speed, if we are looking for a Randy replacement he looks good. Maybe a year with Randy would be good for the kid as he did not have a great season in 08 but he did have alot going on in his personal life. I doubt he will get by Al Davis early in the second.

Deon Butler, Penn State. Yes I am serious a Penn State reciever not named Williams...who I think had loads of talent aswell. I know he is small 5' 10 and 175lbs but he runs in the low 4.4's. From what I read he has a great work ethic and I think we could get after the 4th round. I just like what I saw on the field and think he could be a player in the NFL.

Aaron Kelly, Clemson. Another late rounder who draft stock dropped with the production (or lack of) of Clemson offense. If he had of come out last year I think he would have gone high with 88 receptions, 1,081 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2007. He must improve his 40 is the downside (4.5)

I agree with your assessment on defense and reinforcements for the OL, but wide receiver is a big need long term, too, there's nothing in the pipeline and no depth behind Moss. We should be thankful we should be stacked in terms of picks in this draft, and can address all those needs in April.

I don't see WR as a need at all, especially this early in the draft.

Still, Harvin is going to be a nice player. If he was in our offense I think he would be a beautiful compliment to both Welker and Moss. He can catch the ball underneath against zone and make plays or beat man down the field. He plays football extremely fast.

I think that if we had Maclin, he would be what we hoped Stallworth would be. Maclin is still a very raw route runner, which concerns me, but I think he has good hands, quick feet and intense speed.

Although I would prefer some defensive help or a nice lineman, I think that either one of these guys would succeed tremendously in our offense in due time.

There's only 2 true wide receivers under contract for 09, and one of them is up in 2010. I do see wide receiver as a need, either via FA or draft.

I could see Harvin with the Chargers pick in Round 2. Big issue with him though is durability. You're drafting him knowing he probably won't be able to play as a full-time starting WR and will likely be a complementary playmaker that comes in on 3- and 4-wide sets. Def. a luxury pick.

He'll succeed if a team draft him and uses him as above, but if he is drafted by a WR-starved team like the Titans and is relied on to be The Man he'll likely be seen as a bust.

I will feel very comfortable going into next season with:

Moss
Welker
Gaffney or another average vet
Washington
Aiken

I would love the luxury of having a nice young stud to develop for the future, but at what expense? We have plenty of legitimate "needs" that can be addressed via the draft, but I would feel much more comfortable getting a cheaper, established veteran rather than drafting someone who is highly touted. Someone like Devery Henderson or, preferrably, Roscoe Parrish would fit the bill.

Other options could include Lance Moore, Demetrius Williams, Baskett or Bobby Engram.

We're not very good at developing WR's. We should re-sign/sign a couple of free agents.

Is Parrish a FA? He would be a great score for his PR skills alone. Think he would also fit in very well with the Pats passing game. (I don't think he was ever a good fit for Buff's offense.)

A lot of wide receiver underclassmen declared for the draft.

Maybe one of them will fall to the Patriots in a middle round.

Maclin and Harvey will be gone by round 2. Maclin is a surefire top 20 and I think one of the playoff teams will take Harvin (Ravens, Titans, both teams need more playmakers).

Heyward-Bey looks like he's got great upside and I think someone will take a chance on him in the second round. I could see Bill take a chance. We need to develop a WR that will take over once Moss is done.

Neither one.

Would gamble on Heyward-Bey if he makes it to round two. Rather have defense or O-line in the first. Although if we needed a RB in the first, I wouldn't mind...

Not sure, but he is a FA according to the often outdated Football Future.
