So......why do so many people have such a problem with Tony Dungy being pretty much being seen as a great guy by people all over the league and by people in and out of football who have met him?

Im glad hes retiring because the Colts have been a top nemesis for the Patriots. But the Patriots have 3 trophys, the Colts only 1, so why the obsession with Dungy?

You know, it is possible that Belichick is better than Dungy as a football coach, and that maybe, just maybe, since EVERYBODY who would know says so, that Tony Dungy is a really good man?

Well, it's tit for tat (weird expression if there ever was one). We Pats fans endured a ton of Belichick bashing last year, so some revenge bashing is probably normal. Author forgot to add HBO to the list below; saw Bob Costas try to annoint Dungy to Popedom for a half hour on a Costas Now show last year. Actually, I think it was the one where the gay bashing also came out.

And it might be prudent for all the Dungy sychophants at ESPN, NFL Net, Fox, CBS, NBC and Ron Borges' cubicle at the Herald to be put on 24 hour suicide watch.

Well, why should anybody care what the media says anyways?

And the only way to "win" a repeated tit-for-tat is if you're the guy who starts it and ends it. Every other choice is a draw or a loss so it's a pretty poor strategy (this is why we haven't had a nuclear war).

In politics, it's called separating church and state. Dungy didn't do that. To me, it's annoying to pull the other stuff into the conversation when you're on TV to talk about what won or lost the game. Nothing illegal, just annoying and out of place.

a guy is entitled to say whatever he wants. Compared to the stuff 99% of athletes and coaches say and do its refreshing to that they have something upstairs besides marbles.

You know, he never called himself St. anything and neither have anyone in the media. Its the people who have a problem with a good man being called one who use these ridiculous terms.

hey, i dont know Tony Dungy. But when so many people consistantly say the same thing, I would think its true. And to endure what he endured 3 years ago....I just dont want it said that NOBODY in Patriots Nation can give the guy his props and simply wish him luck.

Personnally I don't really care either way about him excpet that he coached a team that were our rivals.

I think what really gets people on here though is all the ball washing the "Dungy Lama" gets when The Hooded One just gets crapped on. Not to mention the religious stuff can get a little much for those of us that are not tied to their faith or of the same faith.

I don't really mind him as a coach, he has done well, and he has been true to his philosophy and convictions. It's just that one sanctimonious holier than thou statement on spygate that rankled me. Wisdom and his god should have counseled silence.

His comments about spygate bothered me as well - for being the devout christian, he seemed to come up with judgements fairly quickly.

Other than that Tony Dungy is a wonderful person, he does a lot of great work for at-risk kids, spending a lot of time with them out of the goodness of his heart. I have no problem with him whatsoever away from football; the world would be a better place with more people like him.

Aside from his unnecessary comments about BB in regards to spygate, I do believe he is over rated as an NFL coach. Look beyond the W-L record, and you have a coach that constantly under achieved in both Tampa and Indy. Once the Bucs previous owner passed away, they were willing to spend money to win rather than lose but rake in their share of the revenue sharing. Several draft picks were already on board, and thanks to a terrible first season they had good picks heading in to his second season.

That was Perfect Storm I, and though the team was considered pre-season SB favorites time after time, they never got that far - and if I'm not mistaken never made it to the NFCCG any other year either. The first season after he leaves, the team wins a SB - and the Dungy apologists give him credit by saying 'that was Dungy's team' even though they won less games than the previous year three seasons in a row, a la Surfer Pete.

He then lands a job in Indy with a team that included Peyton, Marvin, and Edgerrin James. After a Mora meltdown the previous year, they had nowhere to go but up. The offense continued to do well despite Dungy, and just like in Tampa Bay they under achieved in comparison to the amount of talent on the field. Fortunately they rallied against the Pats, got a gift Bears team to play in the SB, and he finally won a Lombardi.

Now he's deified as this great coach based on stats, but in my opinion he vastly under achieved when you take a close look at his opportunities. That is the problem I have with Dungy; it's not him, but the way so many in the media, and the fans who echo their words, praise him with a blind eye. In my opinion he's over rated, even though he will surely end up in the NFL Hall of Fame.

Nonsense. What do all those same people say about BB? He has no humor. Never smiles. Is a jerk. Do you agree with those assessments as well?

The fact of the matter is that we know neither of these people and really have no place to judge them as people. That is why all of these suplications to him as some great guy are sickening. For all you know he clubs baby seals in his basement and uses immigrant child slave labor to make them into coats. I mean think about what you wrote above. It essentially boils down to: I think Dungy is a great guy because a bunch of people who I don't know have said he's a great guy so it must be true.

The thing I will never understand is why people care if he is a nice guy or not. He's a friggin football coach. The rest I really don't care about.
