Reiss has one possibility for QB coach in his mailbag today:

Q: Mike, any idea about who are potential replacements for McDaniels at offensive coordinator?
Matt

A: I can only hypothesize, Matt, as I don't have any concrete answers about potential replacements. The first thing I'd say is that I don't think the Patriots' system will change, so the new coordinator is going to have to adjust to what is in place. That's why a notable name like a Mike Martz wouldn't likely be on the radar and also why I think an internal hire - or someone with a background in the team's system - is most likely. I'd think that receivers coach Bill O'Brien might be a possibility, and I wouldn't rule out Bill Belichick taking a more active role on offense. In addition to losing McDaniels as a coordinator, the Patriots must also replace his work with quarterbacks, which is a consideration here as well. Scot Loeffler, a former Michigan assistant who was with the Lions and was just hired as a quarterbacks coach at Florida, was someone the Patriots had expressed interest in the past. This is purely speculation on my part, but I wonder if he might still be a consideration for that type of QB role.

Ask Reiss: Patriots will have some holes to fill - Boston.com

That is interesting one would persume he worked with Brady in Michigan but anyone know this to be fact.

My preference would be to bring back Davidson and Crennel as our coordinators.

I agree w/you. I would love to get Davidson back here as OC: Panthers.com - Jeff Davidson Since Crennel is staying in Cleveland, best bet is to stick w/Dean Pees.

EDIT> Per Lombardi on Carolina coaching staff:

4. I hear today that the Carolina Panthers told their assistant coaches that they’re expected to return next year and the team will start working on new deals. No one on the staff has a deal for next season.

Then the Panthers can't stop him from interviewing, if BB wants him back. :)

Former Patriots assistant expected to be named Browns special teams coach - Cleveland Browns football NFL News - cleveland.com

"A source with knowledge said today that new Browns coach Eric Mangini is expected to name Brad Seely as his special teams coordinator."

Did Seely and Belichick have a falling out or something. Seely is one of the few coaches to out date Belichick here; presumably Belichick likes him and presumably Seely doesn't want to move.

Wonder what's happening.

As I posted in another thread, if Seely's contract expired this year (and, of course, the Patriots don't discuss such things), then he's free to do whatever he wants. [If he were still under contract, then he couldn't do a horizontal transfer unless the Patriots allowed it.]

He is, but it's still weird that he's leaving after 10 years.

Not to mention who he'll be working for.

Does Mangini ever stop? Seriously all he's ever done since he left here is go after our ex players and take a coach or two with him on his way out:mad:
I'm sick of his Pats/BB fetish.
If Seely's going to go so be it, but I'll believe it when I actually see it confirmed.

Mangini's the NFL guru apparently, and the Browns might just take over the world

MGoBlue: Scot Loeffler

After graduating, Loeffler was a graduate assistant coach (1998-99) for the Wolverines. He worked daily with the offensive staff and handled the scout team offense during practice sessions. During his tenure, Loeffler helped coach future NFL quarterbacks Brian Griese (Chicago Bears), Scott Driesbach and two-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady (New England Patriots).

I think that we have all learned over the years that BB is always thinking one step ahead. So, I'm sure that he has replacements in mind if they need them.

Also remember we didn't even have an official OC in 2005. It could very well be the same again this coming year.

Right but Josh was wearing a headset and was holding a playsheet - we saw through Belichick's little trick ;)

Special teams stats for 2008:

KR 25.2 yd ave (3rd)
KC 22.3 yd ave (T-10)
PR 10.3 yd ave (T-8)
Punting 36.8 net ave (20)

Last year, IIRC, wasn't much different. I think KC was considerably worse. For all the accolades Sealy has received from BB, the stats really don't back up the rhetoric. Our ST are good, but certainly not great. Would these numbers be much different with another ST coach?

Hmm Jeff Davidson seems like a very interesting canidate. He has been with us prior so he knows the system and some of the personell and he has been calling the plays in Carolina so he has experience with that.

One would wonder why he would want to leave there for the same position here? I know we have a better chance at SBs but they have as good a chance as any NFC team over the next few years.

After the lousy game plan he had for the Arizona playoff game, I don't know about Davidson.

why do all of these teams want our coaches? I thought spygate was a huge deal around the NFL (with other teams) and any coach associated with BB would all be vilified and black balled forever!

(i am being sarcastic btw)

They all want to learn how to use those danged video machines to game plan.

I can see Capers moving on - making a name along with McDaniels - and McDaniels being smart enough to seek out that defensive support

But what's with Seely moving on to the Browns?

He'd been with Belichick 10 years - always as Special Teams coach.

Any indication there was going to be a change? I'd heard Belichick praise the Bills special teams and ST coach numerous times this season. Perhaps there was and is some interest on BB's part in upgrading that position? Or Seely just wanting to step out from BB's coaching shadow as well?

Anyone have any insight there?
