Suppose Cassel is traded to Minnesota for their first rounder this year and at least one more pick. THen we have the 22 and 23 picks. Do you think we'd get Vontae Davis (CB) and William Moore (S) with those picks? I think that would vastly improve the secondary.

edit: I guess there is already a thread on William Moore. Sorry. What about Davis though?

I'd say one of them, but unlikely both.......too many other needs......at that point, if they are available, I'd like to consider TE jermaine gresham, OT jason smith, OLB everette brown

if we had a first round pick for cassel as you mentioned, currently I would like the first 3 rounds to go as follows:

1a - CB vontae davis
1b - OT jason smith
2a - OG jonathan luigs
2b - OLB greg hardy
3a - RB rashad jennings
3b - NT boo robinson

I would prefer a Davis, Smith and then draft Rashard Johnson S from Alabama. That would shore up or secondary. With a deep class. I feel a lot of the talent will be pushed down. This is an important draft for us. With McDaniels and Pioli (Possibly going to the Chefs er Chiefs)

I'm not a Vontae Davis fan, and hope we don't get him. All-world physical ability but inconsistent. Was benched part of this season for poor performance/lack of effort. Could be an underperforming CB version of his brother Vernon.

I love DJ Moore from Vanderbilt, who seems more in the Pats mold, and has much more versatility as a return man and part-time receiver. I also like Sean Smith from Utah at 6'3" 215# who could also play S.

Ehh im not a big fan of drafting Vontae or any other corner in the 1st round this year.We have 2 solid young corners in Wheatley and Wilhite, how well they do next year remains to be seen, but i think we will be better off signing a vet corner in free agency(Mcfadden.Bartell,Greer) and then using our first round pick on the Dline or Oline. We all know how much Belichick values his Dlinemen(Seymour,Wilfork,Warren all first rounders) and besides Seymour,Wilfork and Green will all be free agents next year.

Dline in the 1st, Safety/OLB in the 2nd, Wr/Te in the 3rd and we are good to go!!

Wilhite and Wheatley are solid?? What secondary were you watching? Wheatley was not healthy and was barely challenging for starter time when he was. Wilhite showed some improvement over the course of the year but he doesn't scream out to me 'starting cb' pencil me in! And Hobbs, well, let's not even get into that can of worms. The Pats need help in their secondary. SS/CB are pretty strong needs. Rodney is probably going to retire and you generaly need 6 decent cbs and 4 decent safeties over the course of a year to cover for injures. I don't think we have that.

As an athlete and on potential, Davis is top 10. He has good size, athletic ability, speed, and can tackle. However, his midseason benching does create for some concern. He still put up good numbers this season, and before the benching he was a top 15 pick, and some even graded him above Malcolm Jenkins of Ohio State. Now with the benching he should be available at #23, but who knows if NE would take him, he's certainly worth the gamble in the 20's being he is top 15 talent wise.

That's why i was advocating signing a Cb in free agency, At least we know whilhite and wheatley are nickel corners at the very least. If we draft a corner in the first round who knows if he will even be rdy to give us more than what we can get out of a Vet Cb and or Whilhite/Wheatley.

Ok, I'll agree they should be decent nickel corners. But when's the last time the Pats signed a starting CB from free agency... You'd have to go all the way back to Tyrone Poole. If we could find someone decent I'm all for it... but who do we have to pick from in the free agent pool?

another question about Wheatley is whether the guy can ever stay healthy...

I would take Vernon Davis before I take his brother Vontae Davis. Both have a ton of ability, but have issues when it comes to proving their worth on the field.

As for William Moore, his highlights weren't that impressive. He didn't strike me as a solid tackler, but did look like a guy that plays to the bone.
