Per ESPN: Josh McDaniels new HC of Broncos; Capers will follow

The Denver Broncos have reached agreement to name New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, 32, as their new head coach, replacing Mike Shanahan, who was fired Dec. 30 after 14 years on the job, according to team sources. The team is expected to announce the deal on Monday.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen traveled to Boston Thursday for a second interview with McDaniels, who, according to sources, was one of two finalists along with Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

McDaniels becomes the third member of Belichick's coaching staff to be named an NFL head coach in recent years, following Romeo Crennel, who took over Cleveland in 2005 and was fired after this past season, and Eric Mangini, who went to the Jets in 2006. Mangini was also fired after this season and has since been named to replace Crennel in Cleveland.

McDaniels has worked in the NFL eight seasons, all with New England. He joined the Patriots on March 1, 2001 as a personnel assistant in the scouting department and assisted the defensive coaching staff for three seasons. He began serving as the Patriots' quarterbacks coach in 2004 and was named offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach on January 20, 2006.

McDaniels began his coaching career in 1999 as a graduate assistant at Michigan State, working under head coach Nick Saban.

It sucks that he did not get another opportunity with Brady, but that is a perfect situation for him, Cutler , and he will hire a good defense coordinator, and the Broncs who always were trouble, are going to be a pain again..

Wow this sucks he was great. And to think back in 06 we wouldn't even acknowledge the fact that he called all of our offensive plays.

Provided that this is true, ( I don't trust ESPN), who coaches the QBs and coordinates our offense?
We need some stability on our coaching staff, IMO. We had the same coaching staff during our Super Bowl runs. The coaching staff seems like a revolving door lately.

Obviously he walks into a nice offensive situation but never in a million years did I think they'd replace Shanahan with another offensive guy. I assume he'll takle Dom Capers with him, that's what the word was last week.

Although an official OC likely won't be named just like the first year Weis was gone and McDaniels wasn't named OC until the next year.

yeah iam surprised a Defensive coach wasnt hired. will be interesting to see the reactions of the bronco players like cutler,bailey and marshall with 32 old guy running their team after an iconic shanahan.Imagine if pioli goes to the chiefs.it will be pats -Afc west.
This will be a big loss in terms of continuity but as always ,trust Bb to have a plan.

I thank Josh and wish him well but I truly hope he does a lousy job coaching the Broncos Sorry folks, but the Pats are Kraft and BB. In this great land of ours there will be another good OC.

well i meant, he was trashed a lot on this board but i think he has done an admirable job in the last 3 yrs
2006 - Reche caldwell and doug gabriel to AFCCG
2007 - transformed the offense and playcalling with moss and welker
2008 - earned cassel a lot of money

takes a lot of ability for it which we will miss

It's the best job avaliable this offseason. Congrats to Josh. He definitely has the personnel in place on offense to get off to a good start.

Very interesting move by the Broncos, although it was seemingly inevitable, as Pat Bowlen seems to like Josh a lot.

I get the feeling that BB will try to hire RAC and take over more of the offensive playcalling, and train up someone like O'Brian next year. Brady should have another stellar year, regardless of who is the offensive coordinator.

I'll be surprised if its Obrien. This was only his second season with Patriots. I know he has been coordinator at Duke and G Tech, but I predict BB has something else up his sleeve. How about Pat Hill? Assistant HC / OC. Coached on the O side of ball under BB in Cleveland.
