Who to root for in the playoffs

IF you are like me and could care less who wins in the playoffs, I figured I would consider what the ramifications were for each team visa vie the Pats draft picks...

There still is a chance that the Pats 1st rd pick could go as low as #22.

If the Giants, Titans, Steelers, or Carolina make the Superbowl, the Pats picks will stay exactly where they are right now. So root for all of these teams to lose before the SB.


The Chargers were 8-8, and if they make the Superbowl, that would move the Pats up one slot in each round of the draft. The only drawback is that it would move the second round pick that the Pats have of the Chargers from pick #47 to pick # 63 or 64.

Baltimore making the Superbowl would also be good for the Pats, eventhough it would not effect the Pats first round pick, it would remove Baltimore from the pack of 11-5 teams that will rotate between picks #24-27 in rounds 2-7 so those picks would only rotate between 3 teams instead of the current 4 so for instance in the second round instead of the Pats having pick #59, they would have pick # 58.

Philadelphia- The Eagles are the team to root for, if they make the Superbowl, it would move that Pats up one slot in each round of the draft.

Arizona- Ditto! (Go Cards!)

So currently the Pats own picks:
1st: 24 2nd: 15 (SD), 25 3rd: 26 4th: 27 5th: 24 6th: 25 7th: 26

The best case scenario would be a Baltimore vs Philly and/or Arizona Superbowl which would result in the following changes:
1st: 23 2nd: 15 (SD), 24 3rd: 25 4th: 26 5th: 23 6th: 24 7th: 25

A Chargers vs Philly and/or Arizona Superbowl would make the picks look like this:
1st: 22 2nd: 31-2 (SD), 23 3rd: 24 4th: 25th: 22 6th: 23 7th: 24

I'm assuming that we would rather have Baltimore make the SB instead of San Diego because eventhough it would reslut in moving our 1st round pick up one more slot it would also move the SD 2nd round pick from #47 overall to either #63 or #64 which would suck.

I'll be content to see SD washed out before the Super Bowl, the two pick move up in round one isn't worth losing all the ground in the second round.

Last night turned out to be a "best case scenario" for the Pats, both the Titans and the Panthers lost. So no matters what happens now, Carolina will own the #29th pick (which they have already traded to the Eagles), and ther Titans will pick at #30.

If Philly beats the Giants today, the Pats pick will automatically move up from #24 to #23 (and up one slot in each of the follwoing rounds) no matter what else happens (because it would set up a 9-7 Arizona hosting the 9-6-1 Eagles for the right to go to the Superbowl) (doesn't that kinda make you throw up a little?)

Didn't think of that - that would be great.

Best case scenario would be #23 in the 1st round and somewhere around #44-48 and #55-57 in the second round. I think there will be first round talent available through at least the mid second round, so with a small trade up we could potentially have at least 3 first round caliber picks, not counting anything we might get if we franchise and trade Matt Cassel.

Don't forget about the 3rd round comp pick coming for ***ante, So if the Pats trade Cassel for a 1st, they would have 2 1st, 2 2nds, and 2 3rds. That is how you stock up on talent.

Well this makes everything alot easier to predict..

The loser of the Philly/Cards game will pick 21st and the winner will pick either 31 or 32. So the Pats will pick at #23 in the first round, that will not change.

The San Diego loss means that their 2nd round pick that the Pats own will be 47, and that will not change.

The only thing that can change the rest of the Pats picks now is if Baltimore beats the Steelers. This will remove Baltimore from the group of 11-5 teams in the draft rotation. That would effect the Pats in rounds 2-7,

instead of picks: 2nd-26, 3rd-25, 4th-24, 5th-23, 6th-26, 7th-25.

They would have 2nd-25, 3rd-24, 4th-23, 5th-25, 6th-24, 7th-23.
