Kellen Winslow?

I put this here since it seems like a good place for rebuilding discussion.

I didn't really follow the Browns (except briefly to see if Quinn was going to be any good) and the most I know about this guy is from a kid I worked with used to really like him. I seem to have the idea in my mind he's of questionable character or over-ratedness. Anyone got details and/or thoughts as to whether he'd be any use to the Patriots?

**I should note, I'm asking because Mike Lombardi thinks he'll hit the trading block ASAP.

I know that the Browns will also trade tight end Kellen Winslow this off-season and that he has not been a part of any discussions with coaching candidates.

He's of questionable character, questionable intelligence, over-rated, over-paid, doesn't like to block because it's beneath him, takes credit for wins and no accountability in losses, and *****es to the coaches and the media if he doesn't get the ball enough.

I'd prefer not.

He's a perfect fit in Dallas...then maybe the Pats could grab Jason Witten.

He's talented. But he's a prima donna type. So if you need help at TE he would be a hold your nose and sign. The thing is that I think he would cost more money than we'd want to pay. But he would be an upgrade. How much of an upgrade over Watson? Well I'd expect less flubbed passes into interceptions... But I'm not sure it's a big enough upgrade for the $$.

I think Kellen the First really screwed the kid up mentally and emotionally, and altered his perceived reality. Sometimes in my weaker moments I feel bad for the kid. Being coddled and repeatedly told that you're the "Chosen One" throughout one's formative years can't be healthy.

Well our coaching staff has done a wonderful job with other prima donnas like Randy Moss and Corey Dillon. The difference is that those guys were actually hungry for wins and trophies. They were determined so they fit in well here despite their former attitude problems.

Is Winslow as determined as them? Is he as hungry for victories? If he is, then a prima donna attitude would not bother me. He has all the physical tools to be a great player, that's for sure.

Yup, I remember walking in as freshmen walk-on looking for this giant kid that they brought in from the Bronx. Same class.

We were doing .22s and Tast-E Cakes back then. I'm not sure when he graduated to the big boy club.

Winslow gets a really bad rap and I'm not surprised to see most people here ripping on him. But the truth is, all the guy wants to do is win and he leaves it all on the field. He pretty much guaranteed he shortened the length of his career playing every week on a bad knee when he easily could have shut it down on a bad Browns team. (Yes, I know part of that is his own fault with the stupid bike accident, but he still plays hurt and plays effectively.)

I think he is Top 3 talent-wise in the NFL at TE. Can't really comment on his role as a blocker, but I don't recall him having bad hands, stats could prove me otherwise.

I'd love to see him as a Patriot, but his salary demands plus compensation from Browns likely makes it prohibitive.

But character-wise, I think he (rightfully) earned his bad rep early in his career but lately seems to have had a good attitude adjustment. The only thing I recall him making headlines for last season was making a comment about the Browns facility and their propensity to cause staph infections, which was a valid comment, then he gets suspended by the team, which was total BS.

(1) injury prone
(2) loud mouth, so may have character issues
(3) price to acquire him in trade
(4) price to pay him

i think #2 is one thing we can handle in our locker room. however, i dont like injury prone players, and i think the price would be too high

I would absolutely take this kid. He seems to have the exact kind of personality that we can harness in this locker room and turn into a player who will eventually be a leader. I hate him, but I would love him on the Pats, as long as he didn't cost too much - a conditional 4th that could become a 3rd?

He seems to have the exact kind of personality that we can harness in this locker room and turn into a player who will eventually be a leader.

He may end up having a deja veau experience in the Pats locker room as he had in an elevator with a group of O-linemen. Unless he's matured -- I'll pass.
