Cleveland Browns Blog Archive Browns hire Mangini

Eric Mangini completed his rise from Browns ball boy and public relations intern Wednesday, when he reached agreement on a contract to become the team's fourth coach since 1999.

Mangini went 23-25 with the New York Jets, including a 10-6 playoff season in his first year in 2006. In 2008, the Jets started 8-3 but finished 9-7 as quarterback Brett Favre faded down the stretch.

Mangini, who turns 38 on Jan. 19, was the first person Lerner interviewed after firing coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Phil Savage after a 4-12 season and 24-40 record over four years.

Browns dwelling for the next few years:

My advice to all Browns fans is to start drinking heavily.

My advice to Steelers fans is to watch their backs.

So, if you do poorly at a certain job, poorly enough to be fired, someone else will hire you to do that same job?
What a country.
Do you think any of it is Brett's fault?

think this is another way for him to "get back" at BB. If he does a better job with the Browns than BB did you know he will be an a--hole about it

There's one AFC team we can write off as competition for a few years...

hahaha. I feel bad for Browns fans.

looks like scott will be going to the chiefs, or staying

Honestly, I think that's a terrible gig right now. With the Steelers and Ravens in the division and looking good, and pretty young, I don't see how Cleveland competes. (And I say this with the caveat that things change fast in the NFL. I just don't see it there. And I'm glad. Because Mangini's a tool.)

Oh, one more thing: 4 years ago, Lerner hires a former Patriots DC and a Ravens personnel guy. 4 years later, they fire their coach and GM, and hire...a former Patriots DC and a Ravens personnel guy. Brilliant.

One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result..... Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you the Cleveland Browns! Please!

Just read that ex Patriots assistants Rob Ryan and Brian Daboll will be DC and OC respectively.

its fine mangini found a job before jets found a head coach.i guess they have the bills, jags and chiefs on their schedule along with the afc west next yr so mangini might be able to put together some wins .plus he has a QB in quinn now as opposed to nyc . but the ravens and steelers are perennial teams which he has to contend with.

I wonder if Romeo is going to retire (he's in his early 60s with a lot of brownie $$$ headed his way) or coach again. With Mangini hiring Ryan and deciding to split with Romeo, he's out there if both sides are interested.

Mangini may have a gotten a bad rap. I mean, I hate him for being with the JETS, that's a given, but it's possible that two things happened:

> Tanny made all the fuss about video-taping.
> Mangini had no choice but to go along with Favre.

Those may not be the case, but if they are, I can't really see why any other team wouldn't hire him and let him make more of the decisions.

I'm far from sold on Quinn.

Point being Mangini was recruiting Pats caoches on the plane back from Denva. A mortal sin.

Secondly, the weenie went along with Tanny in Spygate. Then Tanny kills Mangini to save his ass. Just deserts.

Thirdly: HERM Effing Edwards made the playoffs, Eric The Fat did not!

On to the important thing...Mangini in Cleveland...how does this affect the Pats?

On the plus side he'll be stealing coaches and players from the Jets now instead of stealing them from the Pats. The Jets should be in disarray next year.

On the minus side, Cleveland is going to stink for a while so Mangini will be continuing to draft players BB likes ahead of him (although with his track record--see Gholston, Vernon--maybe that's not too big of a deal).

Any other ways it impacts the Pats?

Yeah, the Camera debacle is almost moot, Handshake Gate between Belichick and the HC of the NYJ occurred before that, it wasn't the camera snitching that ruined the relationship.
