Question about Cassel's rookie year

His first season in Foxboro, he was third on the depth chart for much of the season, behind TFB and Doug Flutie. Who was wearing the headset on the sidelines? Flutie? Cassel? Both?

I'll explain why I ask this a bit later.

I am guessing his underlying point is going to be that O'Connell did more his rookie year because he had more sideline responsibilties being there was no Flutie around.

Basically, yes. Mental rep != actual rep, obviously, but O'Connell got something like 1,000 of them this year.

I think your point is valid and to take it further he also would have gotten more practice reps as he was the second stringer. But all the reps in the world practice or mental won't help if he doesn't have the tools.

i see your point, but i dont know if thats going to make a huge difference. i think being a pro QB is a little more than knowing the plays and such.

O'Connell also threw 1,151 passes in his college career in addition to running 395 times - he actually gained 1,312 yards rushing in his college career. That's 1,546 college snaps.

For comparison, Matt Stafford has thrown 987 passes in his career at Georgia. Matt Ryan threw more passes than O'Conell but took less total snaps, 1,514.

Bottom line, assuming he has the ability and can be coached out of bad habits from his porous college OL he should be ready quickly.

True, but from what little we've seen, it would appear O'Connell has the tools to at least be the next Matt Cassel.

I was not in the least trying to say he didn't have the tools. Just that mental and practice reps mean nothing until we see it in a game. And as Cassel showed us a preseason game is not enough. I think O'Connell certainly has shown he has the physical tools but the mental tools to be an NFL QB are hard to guage especially from a fans seat.

Actually, it was more than that--in the NCAA they subtract yards lost on sacks from a QB's rushing total.
