New Thought Exercise

You're not kidding. The good news is I was able to re-sign Mike Wright. The bad news was that I did it because after extending Wilfork, Mankins, and Gostkowski, Seymour refused to re-structure and I had to cut him. And I couldn't find a way to afford Asomugha, assuming that even if he was traded for, we'd need to come up with a package nearing Samuels's. I'm also counting on getting a pick in the first three rounds as part of the compensation for Cassel. Here's the 53:

Just assume he's going to get the exclusive franchise tag again. It'll hurt less that way. :)

I'm not a cap guru and my numbers might be way off but I'm going to take a crack at this

1. Franchise Cassel - Yes you tie up a large amount of money in the QB position but the ability to pluck one or two draft picks from someone is tempting. I would specifically contact Detriot, Tampa, Chicago and the Vikings, probably around the Senior Bowl and advise them of Cassels availabilty.. (these seem like the likely targets)

2. Advise all said teams that by Feb 5th you best have your deal in place cause Cassel will be shippd out on the 6th.. Of course this revolves around his agent getting a deal done with his new team but I would trade his rights by no later than feb 6. I say this because Free Agency has just started and we'll free up the money.
Regarding the payment for Cassel, I think they can obtain
a. 2009 1st round pick between 18-23 picks (see said teams)
b. grab 3rd or 4th pick that moves up to 2nd or 3rd based on playing time
c. stay away from top 5 picks, to much money

*** the dates can be played with but you get my drift.. Set a deadline on the best offer ***

3. Speak to Wilfork and explain once the Cassel situation is resolved, his contract will be extended. I'd give him Warren type money.

3. Now this is iffy cause I'm not sure how this works but my understanding is as follows. Extending Richard Seymour would save us on the cap now, knock down the 9 million dollar cap figure.. Of course I might be wrong on this but that # needs to come down

4. Basing the players DRYheat44 Franchised or signed up, I'd stay away from each one. I'm a draft pick whore and wouln't give them up for any of those players

5. I'd sign James sanders to a friendly home discount. If he was offered more money else where, I'd let him walk.. to me he's jsut another JAG and would be my 3rd Safety

6. I'd go hard for Sean Jones. 6-1, 210 pounds.. He can play near the line and play deep and makeup space.. He's avg's about 5 int's the past few years.. He's a solid tackler and seems to understand the game.

7. Regarding the draft, I'm not sure how or what to pick.. But I've left the team with 8 picks in the first 4 rounds.. I would lean more towards defense (CB, LB and DL) but take a shot at RB and OL

8. Oh yea, cut D O'neal.. Can't stand him..

9. Draft a punter to compete with Hanson..

I think this is one of the better thought out posts about what should happen this off season and personally i agree except for one of 2 things but thats just down to personal choice. I like sean jones but i don't think he is headed here i think we will probably stay with what we have got and try build through the draft. i think the wilfork scenario is very plausable but the seymour one is a little more 50/50 it would all depend on weather seymour wants to hit the free agency or not. i think we will get either a 1st this yr and a performance based 1st,2nd or 3rd next yr or a 2nd this yr and a 1st next yr for cassel. and come draft time i think we go ilb 1st then with the next picks up until 3rd round will be the o line, d line and secondary

Glad you got it done before the deadline!

Losing Seymour would hurt more than people think, but I am open to trading him if absolutely necessary.

This looks very optimistic to me, not sure we can sign all those players but I like it.

Nice job.

The only ones who would cost us would be Wright, Lechler and Jones. I'm counting on Engram, after a season of injuries and ineffectiveness (ZERO touchdowns) to come here on a one-year "prove it" deal, to play with Brady and put up some numbers and try again for FA next year. Andra Davis should be cheap. Wright would cost a bit, but with Seymour gone hopefully he'll stick around to be a starter. Jones would be tough. But he'd be great in Belichick's defense, and Belichick has a tendency to get who he really wants. If Jones goes elsewhere, I'd re-sign Rodney for one year and see what James Sanders wants. I'd probably also draft a day two safety. As for Lechler, I'm just counting on the fact that he wants to win again.

Serious question, dryheat--as much as I'd like to see Mankins and Gostkowski extended through 2020 or so, why do you think the Pats will do it this offseason? After all, if 2010 is uncapped, then they'll be RFAs, not UFAs.

I'm not sure if the Pats will or will not. Personally, I hate to let key guys get to their free agency year. Once they can sniff free agency, it's hard to convince them not to explore it.

I also don't think, and certainly wouldn't count on, 2010 being an uncapped year. I don't think anyone wants to try to put that toothpaste back in the tube.

Well, if they're going to do something about it, they'd better do it soon, because otherwise the rules for 2009 are going to assume there's no cap in 2010.

Ok, I like such mind sharpening.
I ran it such I would get under the cap by ~1 million for any sort of emergency signings. I accounted for the million or so in dead money and used Draftscout projections to figure the rounds I am taking guys. For new contracts and rookie contracts, I rounded up to the nearest $100,000. I projected a 3rd compensatory pick from Samuel and a 1st round pick for Cassel.

From there 2009 stacks up like….

Returning:

Heath Evans (3 year ~900,000/year)
Russ Hochstien (2 year ~900,000/year)
Jabar Gaffeney (2 year ~1.1 mil/year)
Piere Woods (4 year ~1.5 mil/year)
James Sanders (4 year ~1.75mil/year)
Lonie Paxton (2 year ~800,00/year)

Additions:

ILB – Eric Barton (2 year ~1.5mil/year)
CB – Jabari Greer (2 year ~1.5mil/year)

Extensions

Logan Mankins (5year~5million/year)
Vince Wilfork (5year ~6million/year)
Stephen Gostowski (4year~1.5mil/year)

Losses

Kelly Washington
Billy Yates
Wesely Britt
Ryan O'Callaghan
Mike Richardson
Vince Redd
Tyson Devree
Mike Wright
Chris Hanson
Bo Ruud

Draft 2009

1a – Taylor Mays (SS)

3a – Brian Robiskie (WR)
3b - Kraig Urbik (OG)
4 - Ron Brace (DT)
