Everyone with an opening other than maybe the Jets will probably interview McDaniels. Not surprised there.

Donks are a pretty good opportunity for Josh.

IF that happens, I guarantee you that game gets put in a Sunday Night Football slot.

Do you really think McDaniels in Denver is enough of a storyline to make it a Sunday Night game? Mangini to the Jets was only a major storyline because how he left and where he went to. If Mangini went to the Chargers and left on good terms, I don't think it would have been a major storyline in the game between the Pats and Chargers.

Broncos aren't going to fire a proven offensive HC to replace him with an unproven offensive HC. It would be crazy to replace Shanahan with McDaniels. This job will go to Spagnuola or Schwartz or the like; IMO of course.

Although a defensive minded coach is more likely, I think Shanahan's GM skills are what did him in and his inability to add defensive players. McDaniels won't have that responsibility anywhere he goes and neither will Spagnouola or Schwartz. So there is still a possibility that McDaniels lands in Denver.

pats players and coaches = fail elsewhere, that's a big risk

You're absolutely right but their defense is such a mess and their offense is talented enough that they need a guy to focus on that side. Bringing in another new DC and replacing Shanahan with McDaniels seems unlikely.

Yeah, he would probably be able to to wonders with a team who is already a pass-first offense. He'll have to hire a very good defensive coordinator (ala a Wade Phillips) if he was hired though. I, for one, do not think that McD is ready for a head coaching job. I think it would be better for him to stay on the Pats but if that's what he wants to do and must leave, then I would have full trust in BB to hire or promote someone that's worthy of replacing him.

something to think about. the broncos moved to a 3WR offense this yr and even admiitted borrowing it from the 2007 pats. Who better to continue to run it than JMcd

And let's not forget, as Tom Jackson told us, Jay Cutler is better than Tom Brady.

Does Jay Cutler hate his coach too? Is that why Shanahan got fired?

Did he say that? Hilarious.

But seriously, Cutler has the ability to get comfortably within the top 10, probably closer to the top 5 next year with the steady decline of Romo and Palmer. He has a rocket arm.

Hey guys...back now to ask about this...

I've heard some pretty negative things from Pats fans about McDaniels...most of whom said there's no way the Broncos would take him but they'd be happy/relieved if they did.

What's the general opinion here?

Is he a good O coordinator?

Ready to be a head coach?

Only suited to be a good coordinator...or not even a good coordinator?

As a Broncos fan, I want Spagnuolo first, and then I'm not sure after that...

People here would complain about God if he were the Patriots' offensive coordinator, so I wouldn't read too much into that. Unfortunately for Denver, the problem wasn't the coaching, it was the talent aquisition, so it's probably not going to be a quick fix unless Bowlen is ready to open that checkbook all the way up.

The only knock on him I have heard and/or shared was that his play calling was a little annoying a times. Sometimes relying to much on one thing and not changing pace enough. Whether that was over reliane on Moss or at times relying on screens while other times not even throwing one to keep the oppostion alert to them.

And that is more a problem of the OC and not a head coach as they don't usually call the plays (though some do).

I think especially with your team adopting some of the Patriot offensive philosphies that he would be great for your team. IMO he is a really good game planner though last year was "easy" with the Moss Brady show this year was much more difficult and he came up with winning plans for the first half when Cassel was still coming along and he came up with good ones once he proved he could be trusted with an expanded role. And his work with Cassel should not be overlooked.

Count me as one who thinks Denver would be a great place for him to land and that you guys would be happy with him.

McDaniels is only 32 years old, the same age as Tom Brady. That is way too young to be a head coach, the guy doesn't know squat besides offense and some marginal defensive assistant duties.

He is a very good offensive coordinator. He is good at spotting opponent weaknesses, comes in generally with good game plans, and then won't take his foot off the pedal. This is the good about him.

The bad:
- He is horrible at in game adjustments. This is either because he gets too c.ocky about his game plans and won't change them mid-game even if they aren't working, or because he is too young or inexperienced to either spot the problem and/or diagnose how to fix it in a short amount of time. I would bet it's the former because he seems like an arrogant douche bag.

- He is not very creative or deceptive. He will go into a game with 5-10 core plays and basically run the same thing over.. and over.. and over again. This kills us in the playoffs since Charlie Weiss left because defenses scout us, figure us out, and then stop us, and McDaniels still does the same stuff over and over.

- Related to above but he is terrible in big moments or game-ending playoff drives. Multiple times when we need a score late in the game he calls some very stupid or mind boggling plays that eliminate any chance of tying or winning the game. I'm not just talking about the Giants game where he called 4 straight bombs to end the game, he has done this multiple times in years before it.

- It is not clear how he would do managing an entire team since he is so young and inexperienced at anything else besides offense.

- It is not clear how he will do without great talent. Ever since 2005 the Patriots have spent high draft picks and money on offensive talent, which makes McDaniels look good. Tom Brady made his bad calls look great for a few years, and even under Cassel he was blessed with a stud running game and great receivers.

Basically, I would say he is a very strong candidate who understands how to put up yards and points. He chokes in big drives and in big games, so basically he is at best Mike Martz. I would say that he is more of a choke-artist stat-producing Marino than a Montana, if I could make an analogy between QB's and OC's.

I never understand why anyone assumes this. It seems to me if his job is offensive coordinator that he needs knowledge of his own offense and the opositions defense. If he can't understand defense than he can't do his job. His forte is coaching offense but I am sure he is more than equiped to coach defense as well (persuamably he is better at offense).
