Scott Pioli put on the spot
Browns to Pioli: Today or never
By Ron Borges and Karen Guregian
Thursday, January 1, 2009 - Updated 10h ago

The clock is ticking on Patriots [team stats] vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli, who today must decide whether he wants to take the Cleveland Browns’ offer to be their chief football executive, according to sources familiar with the negotiation.

The two sides met yesterday in New York, and parted company with no deal in place, but with the deadline established.

Club owner Randy Lerner made his pitch, and Pioli countered. According to one source, some within the Browns organization feel Pioli made demands so high that perhaps he really doesn’t want to leave the Patriots nest.

Or maybe he’s simply overplaying his hand.

Lerner is also expected to interview Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay today for the same post. If that meeting does in fact take place, it would be a telltale sign the romance and flirtation with Pioli has ended.

...

The Browns entered yesterday’s meeting prepared to make what was described by a league source as “a huge” financial offer to the Pats executive. The money might have been “huge” but apparently not everything suited Pioli. According to sources, some of his demands were impossible for any team to meet.

...

I guess we will find out today.. Who knows, maybee he needed to see what is out there, and if he does not go to Cleveland, and already turned down the giants.. He will prob never leave , which is good for us..

And in other news, Ron Borges continues to call Clark Hunt "Clint" for the second straight story.

Re: Borges/Guregian: Browns tell Pioli to take it or leave it by today

Wait a second. Wasn't the first story the Browns wanted an answer yesterday? Now it's by today?

I'm guessing Borges' story tomorrow will be "The Browns want an answer by the end of the day, and this time they really mean it.":)

Stay classy Brownies!

Lerner acting like the desperate loser he is!

Lerner needs to be very careful pursuing too many people. If he wants Pioli, he should get that done first before talking to everyone under the sun. McKay is a league favorite and is always going to be pushed for a job, but his presence in the race could alter Pioli’s view. When you have as many options as Pioli has, you need to know it’s your job before you go for the interview. Pioli holds all the cards. He is not coming in to sell himself, Lerner has to sell him. The word on the street is that Randy Lerner is willing to take advice and counsel from everyone and anyone. But right now, he needs to follow his instincts and work on his agenda, not an agenda that someone else might have. I expect that either Pioli is the GM in the next 48 hours or they will have to move on.

I said AS MUCH in another post. I suppose lombardi has more street cred then me. :D

Very bizarre behavior indeed.

Unless, of course, you ARE Lombardi.

:singing: with 4080+ posts? fat chance. I'm sure he has a life that precludes spending countless hours on patsfans.com

Re: Borges/Guregian: Browns tell Pioli to take it or leave it by today

if i was pioli i dont think that he would appreciate a today or never type offer...

Wow, the way the Browns have gone about their business is very strange, IMO. Weird behavior.

They may have got the impression that SP isnt serious about taking the job and want an answer so they can move on. To me it sounds like he's not taking it.

As I wrote somewhere else that tactic works on a kid coming out of college who might be going to another interview but not at this level of upper management. It's the hallmark of a poorly run organization and one he might want to avoid......Pioli is not stringing them along so it seems to be a way to show who's in change....or will be/

Shockingly, it appears the Herald reported something wrong.

ProFootballTalk.com - NO CLEVELAND DEADLINE FOR PIOLI

I'm sick to death of the Herald:

Report: Pioli not obliged to answer today - BostonHerald.com

I like how Guregian skirts accountability, referencing the article with her name stamped upon it as some report in the Herald's sports pages. She and Tomase are the anti-Reiss.

I also wonder if it is these same "sources familiar with the negotiation" who have bestowed upon only her the exclusive knowledge that the Browns definitively want Mangini as their next HC.

Re: Borges/Guregian: Browns tell Pioli to take it or leave it by today [Update: CPD:

Gotta love the Herald citing an outside report that its own report is wrong.

Why anyone continues to regard that paper as a credible source of information is beyond me. It's been a piece of rubbish for decades.

Re: Borges/Guregian: Browns tell Pioli to take it or leave it by today [Update: CPD:

Cleveland Browns Blog Archive McKay interview postponed

>>>>>>A source familiar with the negotiations told the Herald that Pioli met with Lerner Wednesday in New York. A source told the Herald that Pioli's demands in his counter-offer were so high that some within the Browns' organization felt he didn't want to leave the Patriots.
……..
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, whom the Herald reported would be Pioli's top choice for Browns coach, supported that idea in a press conference Wednesday at the Outback Bowl.
"We're good friends. I've got tremendous respect for Scott as a football guy," Ferentz said. "He's just a tremendous person. I caution everybody: Don't try to predict what Scott is going to do, either. He's got a great job right where he's at."<<<<<

There you go. He likes where he is at now and if you want him, you're going to have to overpay to get him to consider moving. Makes perfect sense to me. SP is in the driver's seat.
