College DE to 3-4 Defense projections

I have a question about possible DE's to succeed Sey in 2010....how do Jackson and Suh project as 3-4 ends in your minds?

I wasn't thinking about an OLB projection, just the switch to our 3-4 line. Tyson Jackson is 295lbs, I don't think he'd convert well to OLB. But a thread for general 3-4 conversions, whether they be from OLB to ILB, DT to DE, or DE to OLB would be useful.

What about Selivie from South Florida. I have heard he is a better end than OLB. The kid from Northwestern who got injured in the bowl game looks very intriguing to me. His name is escaping me at the moment. and I do realize he is a junior.

The last I read, Selvie was planning to return and finish his senior year to try and bounce back from the ankle injury that slowed him all season. I wouldn't want to draft him too high because he would be very limited his first year in the NFL.

Corey Wootton of Northwestern was really intriguing as a potential true "Elephant." He looked to be as athletic as McGinest, carrying the same weight with longer arms to fend off OT's and swat down passes. His interception was very pretty. I expect he will also return for his senior year to give his knee time to heal and boost his draft stock.

Peria Jerry - Ole Miss 6'3" 295lb. NFL scout.com has him the top rated dt.
Size-wise looks more like a 3-4 end. Am curious to see that Ole Miss/T Tech
game.

Not sure about some of the names mentioned, but from what I've seen on the field, Jackson looks your prototypical 3-4 End.

I haven't renewed my subscription to NFLDraftScout and can't read the full assessment of him yet but OSU's DE Victor Strong-Butler might have the skills to play ILB. I think he's a little on the short side for OLB but he's about the same size as Bruschi @ 6'2 238 lbs. He was a WR when he arrived at OSU so he can run and he had a good day against Pitt yesterday. NFLDraftScout currently has him listed in the 6th round but he's moving up. A player to keep an eye on.

NFLDraftScout hasn't completed their review of his positives and negatives yet so having your subscription wouldn't help you right now.. That being said, Strong-Butler was invited to and has accepted the invite to play in the East-West Shrine game.

He's also VERY fast clocking in around the 4.5 range. I could see him as a late round pick would could fill in behind Mayo at the WILB position and provide the Pats some pass rush ability if he's on the field with Mayo.. but this would be 2-3 years down the road.

You're correct in that I haven't been keeping up with the Bowl games.. And yes, I did forget Ohio State, but most sites just say OHIO for them

As for Guyton, I see him as a Roman Phifer type LB with coverage being his specialty and him backing up Mayo as the WILB. The Pats haven't had a true SILB since they lost Ted Johnson, though Bruschi has done a good job there. That is really what they need. Is someone for the starting SILB position who can take over after the 2009 season.

I can see the Pats spending 2-3 picks on LBers to improve their youth, especially with Vrabel and Bruschi stepping aside in the next couple of years. I'd love for the Pats to keep Bruschi or Vrabel as a Asst. LB coach, but I don't know how much interest Bruschi has in that. I know that Vrabel does want to coach, I just don't know if its at the pro-level.

What do you think of DE Georgia Tech Michael Johnson? 6-7 260 and will probably lead the DEs in the 40. He kind of reminds me of Many Lawson. I missed the Chick-a-fil bowl so I didn't get to see him play.

I'm just adding them based on their physical style of play right now until there's more info from the combine etc. They're both pretty good around the LOS. The great unknown is pass defense and Beckwith might be a better MLB fit in a 4-3. I added Beckwith even though he's not a DE.

Looking at NFL Draft Scout's profile page...

Pittman has the measurables, but I notice that there are no player notes after August, which suggests he disappeared this season...I have the LSU bowl game recorded and will look for both players.

Beckwith needs to add another 10 lbs, but his profile reads like the kind of player I'm looking for at SILB to take on blockers and stuff the run.

barwin looked the part last night.......there weren't many chances to visualize him into the pats scheme, but that's because they were playing against an offense thats does not reflect a pro set.........he looks like he's got vrabel-like outside moves and seems a bit stronger with an inside move......pencil him in for round 2
