As far as I know Seymour is is under contract for 1 more season.

He had a decent bounce back year in 2008, but he is not the Seymour
of old.

You know he will be looking for top dollar again when he contract is up.

What do we do with Seymour?

Do we see if a team who needs a run stopping DE, will part with a top pick
to get Seymour? This would free up money for free agents, if we franchise
Cassell (although I expect to trade Cassell, if Franchised).

Do we keep Seymour and just let him walk after the 2009 season?

Do we give Seymour another top dollar contract, although he is not the
same player of the Championship seasons?

I would like to see what we could get for Seymour in a trade?
Would a team part with a 1st or 2nd round pick for the Seymour name?

Re: What is Seymour's future with the Pats ?

i dont htink a team would give up a 1st...

prob not even a 2nd...

are there any DE's similar to seymour in the upcoming draft? i honestly believe that Seymour will play out his contract, and then leave

u are right he had a much better season this year, but it was not on par to his first 3 or so years when he was a monster

if, slight chance, he performs next yr like he did when he first came into the league, then the pats may try to sign him to an extension....but more then likely i dont see it happenning

Seymour is a tremendous player, but at the same time he has an injury history and is very expensive.

I predict he plays it out, gets franchised and traded.

I mostly agree with this. Makes no sense to cut him now if the cap cost is adequate for value. This is his contract year so that could motivate a stellar performance.

If he plays big then tag and trade him next year.

There are Defensive Linemen and there are what I choose to call "Foundation" Linemen. Guys like Merlin Olsen, Bob Lilley, Dan Hampton, Danny White, and yes Reggie White. About one a decade. On the Offensive side guys like Mike Munoz(?sp), Orlando Pace, Jonathan Ogden, Walter Jones never get traded either.

Of ALL of these only Reggie, near the end of his career, ever moved from the Team that luckily got him in the first place. It was at the dawn of Free Agency, the Eagles screwed up, and he went to the Packers and took them to a Superbowl, win over the Pats. He was more responsible for the victory than his Favreness, IMHO. BTW What do you mean Seymour wasn't as good a before. He was shafted, and he should have been chosen for the Pro bowl and All Pro off his season, leading the Team in Sacks, Pressures, QB hits, and commanding double or triple teaming.

In short, you don't ever let "Foundation" Linemen go!! SeyMonsta will retire from the Patriots and go straight to the HOF.

that'be tagging and tradint 2 yrs in a row...LOL i can already hear some ppl cry out about it, LOL

I like Seymour as much as anyone, but BB will not pay him a lot of future $$$ for past performances.

This is exactly why we need an OLB. Seymour was better this year by far compared to years past. He had 8 sacks, as a DE in a 3-4. That tells me he was probably double teamed a lot, and I bet you anything if we had a good OLB to come off the edge we'd see him being even more effective. When you have 3 linemen in the 3-4 going against an OL, the LBs have to make a lot of plays. We don't have the play makes off the edge to do that.

I want Seymour to retire a Patriot, so long as he stays healthy. The problem is money. It's funny AZ brings up Pace, White, etc. Well during the salary cap I don't know too many of those guys who had line mates making big money too. Remember, Warren is decently paid, wilfork needs a new deal, and Seymour is Seymour. We can't lock up too much in any single position regardless of the importance of it. 2 huge deals and one decent sized one kills our chance for other FAs and depth.

The Patriots should cut Seymour IMO ... he's had a great career but he's a 2 down DE in our system. Kind of hard to cut a guy who was here for 3 rings but business is business. I'd rather see Jarvis Greene resigned for 3 years and use the savings elsewhere. Belichick will be grabbing a DT/DE type in one of the 1st 3 rounds this year IMO.

Especially the league. Tag and trade is a no no.

I pretty much agree with this (except for the 2 down part) if Seymour gets too expensive to keep at the end of 2009. Jarvis Green is also a tremendous presence and he has a habit of stepping it up at the perfect time in big games. If we must let go of Seymour, Green is no scrub to take his place.

the biggest problem is Seymour is really at his best as a DT in the 4-3. That is what we was in college, and when he came here, they moved him to DE. He is a great player and command a double team most of the time.

with that said, he make too much money and at time is being out played by Green IMO. I say try to trade him and if not, let him go to someone else for the last payday. I think we would be better off with a pass rush that can help the DB a little.

Some players can never do enough on this board.

Seymour had a good year, led the team with 8 sacks. Green basically did nothing of note for the first 15 weeks this past year. Seymour has his best year in a couple of years, Green his worst. Clearly the right call is to cut Seymour and install Green in his place.

The Patriots are going to keep both players in the same roles for 2009. At that point, the Pats will likely part ways with Seymour as his contract is up and age and injuries don't make him a great long term investment at the $ he will command.

Seymours the 2nd best DL on the team, Jarvis Green is good but hes no Seymour. Id be shocked if the Pats cut him BB values talented trench players alot especially on the defensive line.

I wouldn't. BB had no problems with getting rid of Bledsoe and Milloy and saying "goodbye" to Ty Law.

We know or atleast we think we know how much more value BB puts in the Dline over the secondary.

Behind Wilfork or Warren?

From Miguel's updated cap page, it looked like we could save over $3m by cutting or trading Sey, so you can never rule it out. I think what they'll do is let him enter the final year of his contract and make a decision on him next year based on his play and the play of the DE we draft on Day 1 in April.

Behind Wilfork ahead of Warren. I agree with you he's going to play for the Patriots next season and then who knows but he will not be cut before next season, if I'm wrong ill man up and admit it but I dont see that happening.

I suspect he'll play out this season as we draft more secondary and LB help and then leave in 2009 as the Pats draft his replacement.

I have absolutely no sentimental values regarding players. I'm a hard core what-have-you-done-for-me-lately fan. The problem with evaluating Seymour (other then the # of downs played) is that the vast majority of fans do not know how valuable he is. There were posts during the season complaining about his lack of stats (tackles, sacks, pressures, deflected passes, etc, etc.) with some wanting to trade/cut him. All I know is, when BB states he had a dominant game (yet he had no stats to show for it) I'm with the program.
This guy has got to be the hardest player on the team to evaluate, unless your an X and O guy that attends games. The average fan is lost in trying to justify his status. Thus, I'll read the posts, but I'm not going to be swayed one way or another.
