Reiss: Pats sign 5 p-squaders to new deals. What does it all mean?

Patriots sign 5 to future contracts - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

The Patriots announced that five players have been signed to future contracts, meaning they will join the team when the 2009 league year begins Feb. 27. The players are:

• DL Titus Adams
• OLB Angelo Craig
• P Tom Malone
• OLB Darrell Robertson
• OL Ryan Wendell

All five players ended the 2008 season as members of the Patriots practice squad.

Does this simply mean they'll be part of the 80 man roster come mini-camp? Does it indicate anything more than that?

im pretty sure this is doen every season, so there is competition next yr...and who knows, maybe a diamond in the rough

Yes. It usually happens to practice squaders. Left out this year were Mark Dillard and Maurice Price.

It just means that they showed enough to be looked at again next year.

Yes. It usually happens to practice squaders. Left out this year were Mark Dillard and Maurice Price.

My guess is that these two are probably trying to test the market...and maybe enhance their pocketbook attempting to get deals with other clubs. I hope one or both are back with the Pats..I know the Pats like both...so my guess is THAT is probably the reason.

Crable, Redd, Rudd, and Woods will be joined by Craig and Robertson

to compete for backup spots. Maybe someone will be next year's

My guess is that these two are probably trying to test the market...and maybe enhance their pocketbook attempting to get deals with other clubs.

There is no possible way practice squadders get signed for more than minimum with a few grand bonus. They won't make substantially more from another team. So they would go where they have the best chance of playing, which is likely the real reason they left (if indeed it was their choice).

This is normal. Yes, they will all be part of the 80 man roster.

Getting the minimum or MORE is better than getting what they got while on the practice squad.

Are you forgetting that the Pats have on multiple occasions signed PS guys for vet minimum amounts of money? I think Yates and Mruckowski are two examples of that, both on the OL. I vaguely seems to remember there being a non-OL example as well.

No. Practice squadders get signed to the minimum in the offseason, I am pretty sure the signings the Patriots just made were for minimum. It's only after they get cut that they get signed to the PS at a lower rate. I should go back to Miguel's old pages to see if they ever signed a PSer in the offseason above minimum.

If a team really wanted one of our PSers, enough to pay a significant bonus, they could have claimed him last week and then he would have been their exclusive property in the offseason.

Alamo - You are wrong. What I said was correct. Those players signing contracts for the minimum IS more than what they got on the practice squad. I fully understand that they only get those contracts if they make a team. Except for whatever signing bonus they get. And there is a definite possibility that they get more than a few thousand, depending on the team they sign with. What you forget is that a SB of 16K is still better than a SB of 6K and that the 16K was probably a fifth of what they made as practice squadders.

Actually, that is false. If another team had claimed him last week, they wouldn't have to pay the SB and the player would be a free agent. Unless, of course, they claimed him and signed him to a long term deal (3 years or so).

Perhaps that's technically correct, but in my opinion in a meaningless way in relation to the point we were making. I think a PS player getting more than a 10K bonus is very rare, but I'd have to research that, and I don't consider a few grand significant in this context.

He would be an exclusive rights free agent, only able to sign with the team that had obtained his rights at the end of the season. And no SB, which in fact was my original point that you said was false -- rather than paying a SB or offering a better contract this week, all a team had to do was pick him up off the PS last week. Though I understand that teams in the playoff hunt weren't going to do that, others could have though.

These guys are trying to feed their families. An extra few thousand in bonus money is important. Going to a city where you are more likely to make the team is of course important.

I would note that there is likely to be so other team with less competition at safety, so I am a bit surprised at Dillard not signing.
