I think this would make sense: Pioli takes the Cleveland job and brings Josh in as head coach, retaining Romeo as defensive coordinator/assistant head coach and also hiring Tubby Ratfink to work with the defense. (Crennel tried to bring Tubby with him originally.) Crennel reportedly has said he's willing to stay with the organization. The Browns might end up becoming Patriots West. Just too bad that they'd be in the AFC. HOWEVER, with Baltimore on the rise and the Steelers traditionally tough, that division could beat up on itself for years to come.

They're missing the key piece though. The man who wears the hoodie. I love the others but let's not forget who butters the bread here.

Crennel said he would not stay in Cleveland in any other capacity.

Of course. I also think Ernie Adams, Dante Scarnecchia, our special teams coach (name escapes me at the moment) and Jonathan Kraft are among other key behind-the-scenes guys here. From what I've read, Pioli has not been afraid to disagree with BB even though the two share the same philosophy, so he might be hard to replace. At least with these changes looming, we've got the full off-season to deal with them and get other people in place.

I agree. I view the prospect of a Belichick friend, disciple and confidant hiring Mangini as "plausible" as Belichick rehiring him.

I also don't see Crennel taking a demotion with the same club. If he wants to work he'll have no problem finding another option with another team - such as the Patriots.

I would also expect that Pioli and Belichick have an understanding of who is and isn't available for Pioli to take from the staff - such that they are not being denied promotions, as any team could make such an offer to a Patriots assistant.

It would be interesting to see if Pioli and McDaniels become a package - and whether they'd have interest in Cassel as a QB. Any team is going to have to wait to make a deal with the Pats on Cassel - the Browns may be in the best position to do so - having QBs under contract but the ability to trade them once Cassel is available.

Sorry, Tune. But Crennel isn't going to be brought back to Cleveland in any capacity. And Mangin will be lucky if someone can find him a job as a ball boy in this league.

Crennel has already said he'd sit down with Pioli and whoever is named head coach IF Pioli gets the job (see link elsewhere this thread). I definitely could see Romeo staying on there to coach the defense with McDaniel and Pioli in place, a la Gunther Cunningham at Kansas City. You might be right about Tubby R., but Crennel tried really hard to bring him to Cleveland four years ago.

As I said in the OTHER thread, Crennel wasn't fired by Savage. Crennel was fired by the owner of the Browns. Just because Crennel said he'd like to go back doesn't mean that the owner is going to allow it.

Could you please provide a link that Crennel tired to bring Mangini along? I am fairly certain that the only one that BB and Romeo agreed upon was Jeff Davidson.

First, I don't see Pioli ever slapping Belichick in the face by hiring Mangini. I don't see McDaniels doing it either. Both Pioli and McDaniels are loyal to Belichick since both owe their careers to him. They talked about how Pioli got his job with the Browns on WEEI today and it was all Belichick helping out a friend of a friend (that being Pioli) by allowing him access to the defensive coaches brainstorming sessions and allowing him to stay in his condo as he observed.

Second, I don't know if McDaniels would want Crennel. McDaniels did work under Crennel here for two years and probably respects the hell out of him, but there are a lot of guys in the Browns' lockerroom fiercely loyal to Crennel. I don't know if it is good for a first year head coach to have an assistant who might undermine his authority even if it is unintentional.

The question is, who will Pioli take along with him if this does indeed happen, and how will this effect the relationship. That could be a factor.

That was four years ago. I'll see what I can find, but I do recall reading that Crennel wanted Tubby on his staff.

Meanwhile, here's something that could upset the whole apple cart:

Eric Mangini could replace Romeo Crennel with Cleveland Browns

Eric Mangini may not be out of work for long. Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner said he will likely contact Mangini about replacing Mangini's good friend Romeo Crennel.

Mangini began his NFL career as a ballboy for the Browns in 1994 before becoming an intern for the public relations staff. Cleveland coach Bill Belichick offered Mangini a coaching staff position a year later.

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is on Lerner's list. McDaniels could become a front-runner if Lerner hires Scott Pioli, the Patriots' VP of player personnel who has been Belichick's righthand man in New England. The Browns reportedly were granted permission to speak to him.

It makes no sense to me that Lerner would be interested in interviewing head coaching candidates without a GM in place. Weird.

agreed, and why would a potential GM want to work for Lerner, if Lerner is going to have control of staff....

Memo to Randy Lerner:

Eric Mangini is a MUCH better head coaching candidate that Josh McDaniels. He is older and already has 3 years of NFL head coaching experience. He had a winning record with the Jets, and a winning record there for 2 of his 3 seasons. It's not his fault they lost 4 of their last 5 games (ok, I threw up in my mouth a little when I was writing that last bit).

Hire Eric! Josh sucks! Hire Eric! Josh sucks! Hire Eric! Josh sucks!

Well, it isn't who he takes, but how he does it. Mangini was reported to be recruiting staff and players on the plane home from the loss to Denver in the playoffs. If Pioli does the right thing and asks for permission to interview people, I don't see a problem.

I know nothing about Lerner. If the guy is really that wacky, Pioli might want to turn his plane around.

Funny.

If any team is so dense as to turn around and give Mangini a HC job now, they deserve what they get. Indepedent of our dislike for him, he was overmatched in the position. Not horrible--he produced a couple of winning records. But just in over his head, at least currently.

"Mr. Mangini, there's a Mr. Davis on line 1 and a Mr. Ford on line 2."

That's who................

The advantages of keeping Crennel onboard as DC might outweigh the disadvantages. It's worked elsewhere as I've pointed out, re., Gunther Cunningham in Kansas City.
