ProFootballTalk.com - MANGINI OUT!

A league source tells us that the Jets have fired coach Eric Mangini.

The move will be announced at a 10:00 a.m. EST press conference.

Wow.

(As of 9:15 a.m. EST, the termination of Mangini has been confirmed by ESPN 1050 in New York, Jay Glazer of FOX, and Adam Schefter of NFL Network.)

And so it becomes clear that Mangini has taken the fall for a season of unfulfilled expectations after G.M. Mike Tannenbaum broke from the concept of building through the draft and rounded up a bunch of high-priced veterans.

At the press conference, it’ll be interesting to see what if anything Johnson says regarding his comments from March 2008, during which he declared that Mangini and Tannenbaum “absolutely” would be back in 2009.

“I really think it takes time to build,” Johnson said. “You can’t do it in one season.”

We’ll have more to say about this one after the press conference.

Not a surprise really. If I were Woody, I'd fire Tenenbaum too though.

Hope they cleaned out his office and recovered his laptop before dropping the axe!

It'd be nice if we got the truth out of Mangina about the spygate debacle now.

Honestly, Mangini has been a problem, but if the Jets owner and/or manager thinks he WAS the problem, they better think again.

Mostly, this was Tenenbaum's fault.

Anyone could see that going on a free agent binge ala Snyder's Redskins was not going to work, and then when you draft Vernon Gholston on top of the binge, well, you're setting your coach up for failure.

The Jets have a nice offensive line with a good running game. That certainly is something o build on. And a good CB.

They need help practically everywhere else.

I feel ripped off, any other time, I could have reveled in that Jet loss.........

How can that team have 7 Pro Bowlers?

BTW the Tuna is a free man once Huzenga sells the Phins...

It will be intersting to see if he lands a job someplace. Will any coach hire a guy who stabbed his mentor in the back? Normally coaches stick together like glue, and almost never have anything but praise for each other. The "Mangenius" might have to go to college for a job.

You're right. This is as much a PR move as anything. They still have a lot of PSL's to try and sell to get their stadium built and fans in revolt won't buy them.

Luckily, Jets fans are gullible so they'll bring in anyone who can cause excitement about how next year will be huge, lol.

What goes around, comes around...remember "Mangenius"? Ha ha ha...the NY Jets has to be in the top three as the most pathetic franchise in sports.

Hahaha like Brutus, Mangini got his. LOVE IT!

I'd have fired Mangini too.

Look, this guys stock in trade was supposed to be DEFENSE, right? The Jets have Pro Bowlers at CB (Revis), NT (Jenkins) and they now have near Pro Bowl caliber talent like Kerry Rhodes, Shaun Ellis and Calvin Pace.

Yet look at Mangini's defense during his tenure:

2006: 18.4 PPG allowed, 331.6 ypg allowed, 5.2 yp play allowed, 36% 3rd down allowed

2007: 22.2 PPG allowed, 331.9 ypg allowed, 5.2 yp play allowed, 42% 3rd down allowed

2008: 22.2 PPG allowed, 329.4 ypg allowed, 5.2 yp play allowed, 39% 3rd down allowed

3 years at the helm. No improvement. Despite adding a number of pro bowl caliber players, the Jets defense is still mediocre at best.

Yea, you don't want him taking all that info to Ingersole High School next year. They would be a juggernaut. :p

As bad as I feel today, this one one cheeered me up.;)

Bill Belichick has something to smile about today at least.

Last year, Mangina set in motion a chain of events that led inexorably to his own termination. The only question now is, how far will he fall? How long will it take for PFT to run pictures of a homeless Mangina dumpster diving somewhere in New Jersey?

Best news I've heard in a while. Sure the Jets would continue to be terrible if he stayed there, but they'll still be pretty bad given their cap/QB situation unless they get a guy like Cowher or Schotty. Even then, they won't be a threat to us despite being a pretty good team. With Brady we are going to have this division locked up with a month left regardless of how good the Jets or the Fins are.

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus :D

He sucked at being a ball boy, he sucked at being a coach, and he sucked at Byzantine chicanery.

No, I think BB's happy with the ball boy situation as is :D

No article about this being just karma for Mangini? ;)

This is like a late Christmas present :D

Maybe, just maybe, if we get lucky he'll turn on the Jets too and reveal some information he shouldn't.. Oh wouldn't that be a glorious day?

I'm glad the rat is gone...
