I understand that this team did a great thing by achieving an 11-5 record in spite of the injuries. But to leave it at that and not proclaim deep sadness is perhaps some fan's coping mechanism. My feeling is that the accomplishment of 11-5 was tremendous and the fact we are left sans playoffs makes this season a bigger waste than if we were 9-7 or worse. Just my opinion but I had to vent.

An 11-5 QB is worth more in trade than a 9-7 QB. Just saying.

Finally, a long off-season, healthy players, probably less worry about anyone starting on PUP.

It was a fun year, and a nice bridge between dynastic runs.

Ok, i feel a little better but only if the Pats actually get high value from Cassel then it will all be worthwhile.

We'll be fine. It took a wierd scenario to keep us out of the playoffs that hadn't been seen in over 20 years. Look at it how I look at it: this just wasn't our year. We were just not meant to win it all in 2008. Don't worry though. It looks like we have the reunion tour coming up next year.

They didn't stand a chance against a healthy Titan or Indy team...and would have had to fight to make it that far.

I much rather they ended as they did...one of the best teams to never make the playoffs....and proof that BB is not just good because of Brady. The man is brilliant.

And now we have a healthy QB that is worth something and can look forward to a revamped D (sans Harrison and Bruschi most likely) with Brady at the helm for next year.

No complaints. I'll root for Miami...

What you should be disappointed in is the fact that the Patriots allowed an over the hill stiff like Brett Favre to come in here on a Thursday night several weeks ago and go up and down the field, beating the Patriots when they had zero business doing so.

Watching that stiff today was painful, now I know what it's like to be a Jets fan, it's Chinese water torture to say the least.

How ironic is it this ********* coming out of retirement cost the Patriots the division as had he stayed retired, the Jets hold on to Pennington, the Doofins suck with Beck or some other stiff as their QB and we win the division.

Nope, the drama queen just could not stay retired; what a farce he's a pro bowl Qb, he of the 22 interceptions...............

Actually, no 11 team win has failed to make the playoffs since they expanded the playoffs. The Patriots are the first.

You have to wonder if they'll be the ONLY team to accomplish this feat.

It was a fun and frustrating year. Once I woke up and realized BB knew what he had in Cassel I let myself believe they could win - maybe not the SB but at least a playoff game or two. What's so frustrating is how close we were to being 13-3 - and wow wouldn't that have been an amazing accomplishment. Ben Watson's phantom fumble against the Jets and Gaffney's wide open drop against the Colts; two plays, two stinking plays away from blowing the mind of the entire NFL and going into the playoffs as maybe the no. 2 seed - all without the best Super Bowl QB since Joe Montana! My goodness, think of the fawning praise for this team and BB! Think of our pride!
Cassel was a superstar either way, coming from nowhere to drive the Pats so close to the top. if only the defense had played just a smidgen better and we had converted those TWO STINKING PLAYS!!!

Of course it's a disappointment. But that's life man you can't win them all. We enjoyed 3 super bowls in 4 years, only 1 other team has ever seen that. It's been tough the last 4 years the way the seasons have ended, but when you look at the end results and those being considered 'tough', you realize how well off we are as a franchise. We have many years left in our run and the law of averages says sooner or later stuff is going to start going our way again when it needs to, we will get back to the top.

The Broncos did it in the 1980's. Tom Jackson played for that team.

The Playoffs weren't expanded until 1990. The Pats are the first team not to make the Playoffs with 11 wins since there were six Playoff teams in each conference. In addition to the Broncos, there were a couple of teams (I'm too depressed to look them up if anybody else wants to do so) in the 60's who had 11 wins and didn't go on to the championship game, but there was no Playoff format at that time.

Can't believe 11 wins and you aren't in the playoffs. I feel bad for you guys. You guys put up a heck of a fight all year since Brady went down, had some games that you just let get away from you and could very well have had 12 or 13 wins and should be in the dance. If there was one team I didn't want to face...hell yeah it was you guys.

Serious Hat Tip to your team and the effort they put forth with the injuries you had all year.

Other things to be happy about is the Pats finally getting an extra month of rest. With all the injuries accumulating, this is the year to have that extra time.

The thing that burns me is I do think we had a chance if we got in.

WE had Indy earlier in the year and they still dont scare me. Rotheslberger is banged up and I think we match up very well against the Titans style of play.

I really wanted to see what this team could do in the playoffs.

So yeah color me disappointed

great season...too bad the damn thing doesnt have a playoff system like mlb. id like our chances against the dolphins

We can color you any color we want. Red, green, blue, mauve, chartreuse etc. I still won't be able to stay inside the lines :D

color me curveball champ reflex. Ive got that going for me.. which is nice... ;)

I think everybody's disappointed. The things other posters are saying are true--there's much to be proud of, it would have been extremely unlikely for this team (this defense) to win a title, getting knocked out now does give the team an unusual (for them) jump on the post-season.

But.....I agree with you. Not getting a chance with this team and this record is painful. Because as much as we might say the Pats had little chance, they clearly did have a chance. The defense has shown true signs of life, even if it has been against lousy teams. It's tougher to take just assuming they would have lost than if it actually happened.

"For all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are these: It might have been."
