Matt Cassel could set another TEAM record next week

Re: Matt Cassel could set another record next week.

I thought that Eason started as 2, 'cause he sucked. Grogan (who the team wanted from the start) then got hurt, and Eason came back in for the play-off run. Grogan was healthy enough to replace Bambi in the Super Bowl, though.
If Grogan starts in those 3 playoff games the Patriots dont make the Super Bowl. Tony Eason played very well in those 3 games and played the patient style to make it work that Grogan was not capable of. I watched Steve Grogan screw up playoff chances for the Patriots for years and was quite glad when Eason came on the seen, despite the revisionist history around here. I will always be grateful to Tony Eason and will not bash him like most other people do because of the classless remarks of John Hannah.

Cassel has been sacked 46 times so far this season tied most with big ben.

But he compares better than Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco despite the sacks.

Yes, "Squish the Fish," "Berry the Bears." I remember the playoffs. When the "classless" remarks come from a self-disciplined, hall of fame lineman (arguably one of the best ever to play the position) from the same team who made 1000 yard rushers (he did not like Craig James either from what I've heard), and he, unlike yourself, was actually on that team, I'll give his opinion a little more weight than yours. You watched the games, Hannah lived them.

I actually watched the Pats from the pre-Eason days and remember Eason had his two good years, but I also remember him folding like an accordian in the 1985 Super Bowl (And if you asked a Pats fan who watched that game live would you rather bow out in an earlier round or get monumentally embarrassed on a national stage, what do you think the majority would say? Do you really think getting there was a big victory? I would take the earlier exit rather than the record for the worst beating in history held by the Pats for about 5 years.), which is not revisionist. Grogan was tougher, Eason was more talented during his tenure. Grogan outlasted Eason, which is not as much a testament to Grogan's greatness at the end of his career as it is to Eason's lack of aptitude at the position. Eason lacked the mental toughness for the game, which is why he played second banana to his contemporary O'Brien on the Jets after a few short years with the Pats.

Feel free to take a trip down memory lane with the footage of the 1985 Super Bowl. A great Bears defense, but no completions? Grogan was 17/30 1 TD 2 INTs in that game pitching relief. Eason is noteworthy only because the Pats drafted him over Dan Marino and as such represents one of the bigger draft flops in history for the team.

thats ridiculous. Based on 6 passes???? Steve Grogan is another in a long line of overated Boston athletes who people came to love because he played forever, not for what he did on the field. He was a screw up in big games that kept the Patriots out of the playoffs ( remember 5 INTS in SF in 1980?). He was so inneffective at times the likes of Tom Owen and Matt Cavanaugh and a rookie named Tony Eason had to relieve him during competitive parts of the season when the playoffs were on the line. Grogan only became popular when he was a backup. Then he could come in like Don Strock did for Miami and light a spark. And he was darn effective in that role.
In 1984, Tony Eason played better QB than Grogan ever did. In 1985, like I said, Eason led the Patriots past the Jets 26-14, the Raiders 27-20, and in a perfect display of game management, went 8 for 10 with 3 TD's in the AFC title game. Grogan even thanked Eason for getting him to a Super Bowl.
So Eason went 0 for 6. A lot of QBs had trouble against that Bears defense.
Eason came back in 1986 and again played better QB than Grogan ever did or could.

Of course, John Hannah was there, he still threw a former teamate under the bus, which was and is classless. He is and was Steve Grogans friend, the old timers on the team of course prefered Grogan.

none of this justifies the idiotic bashing of Tony Eason that has gone on here for so long. He was no Pro Bowler thats for sure, but he won 3 playoff games to ZERO for Steve Grogan. For that he doesnt deserve scorn. If people are mad about his unseating Doug Flutie in 1988, which was indeed a stupid move, that was the fault of Raymond Berry, not Tony Eason.

And btw, I have the greatest memories of that Super Bowl run and I am always grateful they got there. They got pounded by the Bears like most teams did that year. But being able to enjoy winning that AFC Championship and for the first time being able to say, The Patriots are going to the Super Bowl, is one of my favorite sports memories. I doubt very much that most Patriot fans who went through that Super Bowl run feel like they wished they lost to the Jets in the first round.

I will leave this response as my final statement on Eason to avoid deviating too much from the thread topic (it is about Cassel, not Eason). Feel free to reply to this, but I will say no more on Eason.

I didn't say Grogan was great. You apparently concluded that from something I said. Grogan was a great scrambler early on (set a rushing record in 1976 I believe), was prone to heaving the ball into double coverage, and made plenty of mistakes. Marino was better than both, but the Pats drafted Eason.

As for "idiotic bashing," the reason Eason only missed on 6 passes in the Super Bowl is because he executed the "drop back and fold" play repeatedly under pressure and got pulled (kind of consistent with Hannah's opinion of him). If you knew half as much as you claim to know about Hannah and his "classlessness", you would also know he is fiercely competitive. So he would pick a lousy QB over a good QB out of friendship, despite the losses? I think not. To my knowledge, Hannah only bashed Eason and James, and from their stats without Hannah blocking, he was 2 for 2 on his observations. Neither amounted to much as far as careers (I am not saying a pro bowl level, I am saying competent at the position by NFL standards), and neither had career ending injuries prompting their unceremonious retirements from the NFL.

And why do you remember Grogan coming into the Super Bowl so early? What do you think, Eason had an early flight to catch? Review the footage and correct your own recollection. With all his competencies, how long did he last with the Pats? Why was he dropped down the depth chart?

Fans do not hate Eason for his place on the roster with Flutie, they don't like him because he was a flash in the pan and ultimately blew. And as for your recollection of the playoffs and Eason lighting it up, he threw for under 100 yards per games aginst the Raiders and Dolphins. The running backs were the offense in all but the first game (about 200 yards per game average). Of the 5 TDs Eason threw in those three games, 3 were on short passes against the Dolphins when the defense shifted to stop the run (the Dolphins got gouged for about 250 yards on the run that game). Don't give him too much credit for the playoff wins. James and Weathers had a pretty big hand in that, as did Hannah as the lead block for them.

Again, John Hannah's observations are not "idiotic" as he was actually armed with facts drawn from day to day encounters with Eason. You lack the facts, the insight and the general knowledge to refute Hannah's opinions on the basis that Grogan was Hannah's BFF and that is why Hannah said what he did. A contrary conclusion to Hannah's reflects your own subjective, unsubstantiated opinion. Eason was talented and had two good years statistically. Beyond that, I am not going to sing praises to him as you appear to, and I watched his career live just like you did. I shed no tear when he left, and I do not exalt him to greatness based on the 1985 playoff run.

I would say Matt Ryan is the real deal as we speak i think he's a little more accomplished than Cassel expecially with the Deep Ball.
