Or a guy that needs his facts straight... I have to give John Tommose credit on 1 thing ,he has shown up in the pats locker room, and face these guys after writing one of the most damaging stories in sports histroy.. I know I would not have the guts to do that, for that he gets my credit.. But on facts and knowing his football he needs alot more work, this is a passage from his article today..

The 2002 team’s fatal flaw was an inability to stop the run following the loss of nose tackle Ted Washington in free agency. The Pats’ task in the final two weeks was straightforward - beat the Jets and Dolphins, win the AFC East and host at least one playoff game.

1 Ted Washington did not leave the team till 2004.. which is why we drafted Vince Wilfolk...

2 Ted washington was not on the team till 2003!!!!!!!!!

John , please do better homework, or just ask the herald to put you on a different beat, I know you had a rough year, but please do your homework, if you have not learned anything..As Bruce says..

" baby get your facts learned by now... GET IT STRAIGHT...."

As soon as i read the part about Washington being on the '02 squad i knew it was wrong. What the Herald is doing is a tactic that has been imployed in the last eight years IMO. That is hold out long enough and people will forget, they're attention span isn't that long.

you were expecting something better from the herald? :D

Stop buying the paper. Stop hitting the web page. End of story.

Howabout OJ? Doesn't he deserve a lot of credit for killing two people and (until recently) facing society with a straight face?

That REALLY takes guts. When you think about it on these terms, OJ's really a courageous person! ;)

Millions of honest, hard working Americans without a job today, and THIS guy is still employed??????????

Who owns the Herald? Al Davis?

Yep, it's a disgrace.

What is this "Boston Herald" of which you speak? The only Boston newspaper that I know of is the Globe.

Agreed, I live in Maryland, and this is the same tactic I take with the Baltimore Sun. As a media source, they are non grata.

You have to think of this as an institutional failure. Tomase wrote it. The fact checkers missed it (if the Herald can even still afford fact checkers). At least one editor read it and signed off on it to go to print.

I understand that newspapers were going to hell in a handbasket before the economy turned sour, but still. At some point, don't you have to pack it in and say, "Sorry, we're incapable of putting out a decent enough product to be called a newspaper."

why you even still read the herald is beyond me...

agreed. Occasionally I will click on a link to a Sean McAdam column, but that is it. Most of their sports staff/fact checkers, and editors are garbage at this point.

Florio got it right.....

When John Tomase of the Boston Herald explains that the Pats didn’t make it to the playoffs in 2002 because they didn’t have Ted Washington, Tomase is technically accurate.

Absolutely, there is plenty of blame to go around. We are fans, not professional newsgatherers and I am willing to bet that plenty of people caught that mistake immediately, saying... he wasn't on the 'o1 team..4th rounder to Chicago at the end of training camp for Big Ted. in '03......
Now let's see how long it takes them to admit the mistake and fess up.....
Can't hide behind a source who's out golfing in Maui on this one....

This is beyond an institutional/fact-checking problem. Tomase has been covering this team for several years now and to not know of something as basic as that in the team's recent history is inexcusable.

He just posted a correction and edited the story...
"CORRECTION: The original version of this story said Washington left before the season, not that he was acquired after it."

Of course people are lining up to get on the Jerry Springer show and say they had sex with a groundhog or something. Let's face it, we are in the generation of no shame, no responsibility, and i don't think its a good thing.

Let's face it, in a previous time a reporter like that might have actually made a sincere apology and moved to another city, ashamed to show his face. It was called integrity.

Of course, if you read about sports in the old days you'd know the players and coaches weren't above taking a poke at a reporter who had crossed the line. Tomase gets zero credit, in my mind. The Herald now has a liar and saboteur, along with a liar and plagiarist as their football writers.

The National enquirer used to be a joke, now it is the role model.

Wow, any one who's been a Pats fan since before 2002 should know this. And if they didn't know it, all they would have to do is look up Ted Washington on Wikipedia. So this guy, even though he's a New Englander, isn't a Pats fan, and doesn't check up on basic facts like who was on the team.

This is hilarious to me because the reality is that the risk Tomase took in posting that unsubstantiated story before the Super Bowl totally paid off.

Don't believe me? How many people have read their site today JUST because Tomase wrote it? He's a lightning rod and the Herald is going to keep benefitting from it for I'd guess at least until the end of this season before the hatred starts to ebb.
