Tim Graham: Cassel continues to dazzle NFL insiders

There might still be some Matt Cassel doubters out there.

Among NFL insiders, however, the New England Patriots quarterback is viewed with a high degree of respect. Their admiration of Cassel has only grown with the way he has carried himself the past 10 days.

Seth Wickersham envisions Cassel and McDaniels redeeming the Lions in 2009:

Of course, McDaniels couldn't have accomplished this success without his quarterback. Like Miami did with Chad Pennington last year, Detroit signed a heady passer with something to prove: Matt Cassel, the free agent who left New England ticked off at the notion that he's a system quarterback. Throwing to star receiver Calvin Johnson, Cassel, playing for a cap-friendly salary, has completed 63 percent of his passes, with 28 touchdowns and only 14 picks. Tailback Kevin Smith, whose solid 2008 rookie season was lost in the abyss of losing, is averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

Great link. Thanks. It will be fascinating to see how this plays out. I know some think we'd be "unfair" to Cassel to Franchise him but I think we'll end up Franchising him while letting him make a deal on the "open" market by being very reasonable in our asking price. I don't expect us to hijack a team and limit Cassel's options but I expect us to get a draft pick back, something like a #2, so we don't lose him for nothing - and the comp pick could be nothing if we're active in FA.

Agreed. Business is still business, and New England runs on a very firm, but extremely fair business model. Cassel has provided an excellent service to the company, and is a valued employee. He is worth a certain return, and it would be foolish of the company NOT to ensure it receives adequate compensation for him. The company will also ensure that Cassel is dealt with more than fairly, as an example to the other employees that dealing on the square is sound business practice for all concerned.

It's win-win all around.

I am very intrigued to see how this shakes out. Franchise no Franchise and where does he go. I am not overly concerned with franchising him as there are benifits to just letting him go like the added cap space (yes I know you get it back when the trade goes down but what then you need at the start of FA) and there are benifits to franchising him like the draft pick compensation.

I am much more intrigues by the where. I could certainly live with the lions though for his sake I hope he does better. A lot have thrown out the Vikings and that would be good because he could really help them as they are QB desperate but no WR like Calvin for him there. I hope he ends up with the Bucs, Gruden is QB crazy, I can't Garcia staying there, they are a playoff contender in the NFC, and they have a decent WR group.

Where do you guys want to see him go?

He has to play nice though and agree not to sign it whilst we see whether anyone is interested As per the Asomugha thread its 14m an non-ex franchise for a QB, so someone's got to be willing to stump that up plus a pick. Else he walks as a UFA.

Unless someone really wants him (Detriot?) are they going to pay 14m for him?

Of course if we get lucky and make it into the playoffs and Cassel plays great then chances improve. I mean Detroit could take a proven QB rather than say Bradford, trade down a bit and then give us a no.2 or no.3

Detroit needs an overhaul. As good as Matt has become, you guys really think he could turn the place around all by himself? Doubtful.

I just don't want to see him go to the Jets.

I say trade Cassel to the Raiders for Asomugha straight up.

Only if Cassel insists on it. When the Pats traded for Moss, he agreed to tear up his old contract and take the new one that paid $3M base plus $2M in bonuses.

the lions don't need cassel or mcdaniel......they need a bill parcells or somebody who will have total power to weed everyone out and flip the organization anew..........I'd say the buccaneers would be a more likely place for cassel where a guy like gruden can turn him into 'his'

Well we've been through this over and over - Cassel can sign it and we can still trade him to a team that agrees to either take him on the one year deal and deal with a new contract later or, FAR more likely, has a new contract agreed to. It's the way it's done.

How about Brady?

I was thinking about it. I may actually make more sense to trade Brady than Cassel.

This is not to say I think Cassel is a better QB than Brady, his not. But simply the trade makes more sense.

Brady is worth more on the open market (in terms of picks).

And while I am pretty sure Brady hasn't had his last great game. There is a very decent possibility he has seen his last 16 game start season. He has a bad knee, and two bad ankles. Nobody ever fully heals, even if he is fully recovered for training camp he will always be at a high risk of re-injury on every sack. Cassel on the other hand hasn't taken that many that he is banged up.

Cassel will cost less on the cap. So take the money saved and the picks players acquired in the trade and beef up the defense. Go back to playing pre-2007 Belichick football.

And if Cassel goes down the drop off between Matt and Kevin is not as great as Tom and Kevin. But it wouldn't matter cause we won't be a team that depends on the QB a ton of TDs to win. We will go back to being a defense wins championship team.

Fact is we need to invest more in the backup QB if Tom is the starter than if Matt is. And the starting QB costs more.

Moss agreed to that cause he wanted to be a Patriot.

Why is Matt going to tear up 12 million dollars so he can get locked into a long term contract in Detroit?

That was I meant about playing nice:p

As far as I can see this only works for the Pats if Matt agrees to not to sign the deal before a trade partner is found - and only if that amount is the 14m

I'm not opposed to this idea, but I'll state why I think it won't go down that way.

  1. Kraft loves the Tominator.
  2. Brady is the face of the franchise and is very good for the marketing of the Patriots.
  3. Moss would need to go, too. He's here because of Tom.
  4. Peyton Manning.

Ok, let me explain the last one. TFB and Seyton are the two best QB's in the league. I thought they could be beat last night, but Peyton Manning changes a game. As does Tom. Matt keeps us in games and can launch a comeback drive too, but Brady can drop a long deep pass into double coverage under pressure.

There are lots of good reasons to trade Tom instead (especially the contract muck), but I really don't think it will happen. This topic will be worth revisiting, however, if we make the playoff's and manage to find some wins.

Win the SB and we've got a controversy, and there is NO doubt about it.

We're still on this? I mean, come on.

First off, Brady is worth more on the open market than Cassel for a reason: he's much better. LeKevin Smith has played well this season, should we trade Seymour or Wilfork and let him start? Pierre Woods was adequate filing in for Adalius, maybe its time to ship AD for picks? Get my point?

Second, talk about trading low - yes, Brady is worth more on the open market, but could his value be any lower than coming off of knee surgery? On the flip side, trading Cassel now would be trading him high. No doubt Cassel has proved himself and will be a good QB somewhere, but one can't help but wonder how he would fare without Moss & Wes Welker. When you compare his season to Brady's last season, it becomes apparent they're not in the same league.

Furthermore, Cassel's going to cost only a few mill less a year than Brady. Brady - according to Football Outsiders - had the highest "Value over Replacement" of all time last season. He also averaged 12 points more a game with the same weapons than Cassel is this season. I can't think of another player in the league aside from Peyton Manning who could possibly be worth a 12 point drop off in production to a team. Is a few mill a year worth sacrificing 12 offensive points a game?

Lastly, as for putting picks and money into the defense, for all the complaining about the defense this season, up until Adalius Thomas got injured, it was averaging only giving up 2 points more per game than last season. This was with an injured Rodney Harrison, Deltha O'Neal at CB, and integrating 2 rookies (Guyton and Mayo) into the mix. I don't think the defensive outlook is as grim as people make it, in fact, with a good draft and a good offseason, the Pats seemed prime to put together one of their more solid defenses in recent years.

Not to mention we owe Brady 16 milli in bonus money, so unless I'm not understanding the repercussions of trading a guy, I think we'd owe him that money.

So we'd be paying 16 million dollars to trade one of the best quarterbacks of all time to pay his backup a few million less per year, sacrificing roughly 12 offensive points a game, in order to get perhaps one or two more day 1 picks (understanding that the draft is still a crapshoot and only half of Day 1 picks even make it in this league).

Tell me how any of that sounds like a good idea to you.

EDIT: OK, so after reading a few articles, and maybe someone like Miguel can correct me if I'm wrong here - but to trade Brady, we would then have to pay off the remainder of his signing bonus in the season in which he was traded...so, what I said above is true, trading Brady would make NO financial sense and whatever savings Cassel would have would be more than undone.

I think this summarizes the problem:

KOC is the backup for either player.
