Pats intrested in Asomugha?

How do you spell cha ching? The guy is going to bank...

It is interesting, all the while we have been thinking, improve the pass rush to help the secondary. Maybe improving the secondary would improve the pass rush.

In the peak period the Pats had a very good secondary, Law, Harrison, Wilson (when he could play), Tyrone Poole, Samuel, etc.

Not to mention Hank Poteat, Randall Gay, etc.

I am about as big of Cassel fan/homer as they come, but he ain't worth franchise tag money to us or anybody else for that matter.

He is a good QB but he doesn't command Brady/Peyton money. More like Pennington/Romo money. And if all he is doing is holding Tom's clip board, we let Kevin do that and trust BB does as good of a job developing his next back up as he did with the last two.

He will be franchised. He will not sign the tender. He will have his agent look around the league for a deal that's agreeable to him, so that he can get a longer term contract and not have to ride the pine for another year. Once he finds it, he'll go back to the Patriots with the deal, and the Patriots will work out the compensation with the team in question if it hasn't already been done.

Of course, this is assuming that he doesn't do something to hurt his value in the time between now and the free agency period.

I'm still up in the air on Cassel. While it would be nice to get something for him, I don't think it would be worth the risk of not being able to move him (although I highly doubt that would happen), or not being able to move him quickly enough. In both cases I remain cautiously optimistic.

Tell me why any team would pay him the same thing Brady makes PLUS give up picks?

He is a decent QB. But he ain't Tom Brady/Peyton Manning. And we know he can get the ball into Wes and Randy's hands. Would he be as good with the Lion's receivers.

Pairing with Condon is basically saying I do not want to play for the patriots. The last player Condon tried to sign on the patriots was Watson. It became the longest hold out for a rookie and 17 days into TC Watson fired him and signed with the Pats the next day.

Condon also negotiated Payaton Manning's current contract. Which forced the Colts not to be able to sign any significant FAs for the next few years.

He does his job well, just at the expense of the team and the NFL.

Or maybe he its way of saying I am not willing to take $3 million like Randy did. Condon plays the a-hole demanding $11 million. Once he feels he had the Patriots best offer he fires Condon and signs.

If a team is willing to pay him $8M or so a year he would be worth a trade, we aren't talking about two #1s or anything. Or they could pay a #1 pick millions. More risk.

because it's not like Branch's agent forced Branch out of here or anything

Branch had his ring and was looking for the biggest possible payday. He wasnt worth the money Seattle signed him for.

Re: Pats interested in Asomugha?

1.) There is an exclusive tag that the Raiders can use.
2.) Randy Moss is not making $6 million. His cap number is $6 million. He received a $12 million signing bonus. His 3-year deal averages $9 million.

Man, I knew the economy's bad, but I didn't expect a self-imposed foreclosure on a starting QB.

[thinking we tag the guy to get a better rate of return]

I was thinking maybe a 2 and a 4.
I doubt BB would give up a number one for anything.

Not even the best CB in the NFL?

Well if he did give up a 1 than I would have to agree that this guy must really be something.
It's one thing to read about how good this guy is on a message forum but when BB gives up a one, it confirms my reason for excitement.:D

Hence, "up in the air." No way in hell that Matty C is anywhere near the Brady/Manning pay grade, but a lot of teams would love him. Bills, detroit, Chi-town, Vikings to name a few. Excuse me if I'm wrong, but once tagged and agreed to trade, Cassel/Team-in-question would be able to re-structure a deal to their liking no? So lets say the tag number is 13 mil...you don't think a team would be willing to cough up say...20-25 mil over 4-5 years? And you also think Cassel would be opposed to such a deal? Sure it is less money per annum, but his expected salary just doubled...
I am not suggesting this is the expected salary for MC, simply throwing random numbers out that don't seem to far off from realistic. Then again, I didn't bother looking up the "middle of the road" qb money either.

Well,

How about a trade of Cassel for Asomugha ? Oakland gets a competent QB who actually knows what he's doing, and New England gets to plug a hole with a known quantity, who also happens to have a former mentor here as well.

As to Davis hating the Patriots, I am not convinced that Al Davis even remembers what he had for breakfast each day, let alone who the players are on his team.

Your mileage may vary, of course.....

As much as I love the Patriots, I'm against that on principle. Cassel doesn't deserve to rot in that cesspool.

Something will be worked out after the end of the season.

You long time fans....how delicious is it to use Davis and the Raiders as a farm team?

No way that goes down. Russel gets a few more years of pt until the coaches realize he is too damn stupid. And to RayClay...I'm no long time fan, but I've been raised as one and know a decent amount of the lore around foxboro and can see where you'd find joy in that. I just think its funny that no matter what the hell Al Davis does, it seems it never works well for him. I, along with many, feel the old goat is a tad senile.

I have a feeling Al Davis would smile in satisfaction knowing he turned down a trade with the Pats and NA went elsewhere, even if he got less in return and the Raiders got even worse than they are now. I honestly believe his priorities are so screwed up he'd rather end up with the first overall pick in the 2010 draft than make a move that might help the Pats.

Now, I also wouldn't want to see Cassel have to suffer under Davis either, but you also have to understand that business is business. I'm just pointing out an option that is available, as long as we are all playing GM here :)

respects,

Tom Condon hates the Patriots.

If we are willing to pay the the right money and bonuses he will be willing to do the deal getting the best for his player means he gets more cash! Thats all agents care about.
