I cannot handle another year of watching Tek & his terrible off balance swing.

He is the worst situational hitter I have ever seen. Put a runner on 3rd base with less than 2 outs and the game on the line. Tek does not know how to score the runner. All that is needed is a ground ball to the right side of the infield (They never pull the infield in against Tek). He cannot lay off the high fastball. If he does make contact, he hits a popup (usually foul to the 3b) which does not score the run.

Let him go and move on !

I thought someone did sign him.

I don't think Tek could get a 2 million dollar 1 year contract from another team because they do not want to give up a 1st round draft pick for a
catcher who cannot hit.

I would love to get a 1st round pick and a sandwich pick (between rd#1 & rd#2) for losing Tek.

really? who is going to replace him thats any good.

Ok, pretend you are the GM of the Sox.

Tell me who you would have be the starting catcher for Boston this year. The Sox currently have zero catchers on the major league roster.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing Tek back again. My ideal scenario would be to sign Tek to a 1 or 2 year deal and acquire a young catcher to catch a couple days of the week.

I'm still trying to figure out why he turned down salary arbitration. He'd have made about $12 million next year, and then gone into the open market again. I just don't see how he gets multiple years for more than he made last season. The cost of a pick only adds to his problems. Boras totally screwed up here. Maybe the Sox offer him a 2 year deal for $16 million, which would be overpaying IMO, but something teams like the Sox have to do with certain of their own players. The Yankees had to do it with Posada, Rivera, Pettitte, etc. It's odd, but the Sox will have to pay more than another team, to retain Tek. He's not likely to come back for one year, for much less (if for less at all), than he made last season. Players are stupid like that. Pettitte is doing the same with the Yankees, after being overpaid ( at $16 million per) the last two seasons. I personally think Tek is extremely overrated as a player (at this point in his career at least).

Yeah, because we all know a catchers job is first, and foremost, to hit.

Who needs what we brings to the pitching staff and behind the plate and to the clubhouse as the teams leader the last decade

I think you have to bring him back. Yes he can be an awful hitter but his leadership and catching expertise cannot be replaced.

Varitek is also reported to have swayed a thief decision to return the baby Jesus to the St Patricks Cathedral Nativity scene.

Why not just give him a blank check?

Trust me .... There is life after Varitek.

With all your Tek bashing posts, you still haven't provided a realistic replacement the Sox could go after.

I would trade Buchholz to get Taylor Teagarden.
Nolan Ryan wants Buchholz and we need a long term catcher.
Both are a gamble at this point, but we need a catcher more than a
starting pitcher.

I would also explore trading for Brian Schneider from the Mets.
I have heard he is available. He would make half of what Tek is asking.
He is a great defensive catcher and he has a far better arm than Tek.

If we can't get Schneider, go sign Josh Bard for short money.

Tek is not woth the money and I would love to get a 1st round pick and
a sandwich pick for losing him. We will lose our 1st round pick if we sign
Teixeira. Losing Tek would be addition by subtraction.

I like the catchers Texas has available. Last I heard, Texas wanted Buchholz + another prospect for either Teagarden or Saltalamacchia. That's too damn expensive.

While Schneider is a pretty good defensive catcher, he has been in the decline for a few years now defensively. He's also going to cost the Sox some young talent, which would be a mistake to give up for a catcher with no upside.

We are not guaranteed a first round pick if Tek signs elsewhere.

It would depend on the other prospect... .Masterson, Bowden, Bard and Anderson
(I would say no trade). Manny Delcarmen (I would say yes).

No catcher has been more on the decline than Varitek.
Even his defense is slipping.... He was terrible behind the plate vs Tampa
in the playoffs. He gave up a couple critical pass balls.
Where is the upside in signing Varitek????
We lose 2 top picks to sign a catcher who cannot hit or throw.
There is zero interest in Varitek from other clubs for a reason.

We are not guaranteed a first round pick if Tek signs elsewhere.

Varitek is rated a type A free agent who turned down arbitration.
Any team that signs Varitek will have to give us their 1st round draft pick.
The MLB will also give us a sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd round
as added compensation for losing a type A free agent.

Picks 1-15 are protected and if a team has already signed a Type A we don't wouldn't get the normal compensation.

Thant is info I did not know (Thank you).

OK.... I guess we get their next pick which would still give us 2 picks in the top 50 for losing Tek.

Take the picks.....

A Teixeira signing will afford this team to have a below average bat at the catching position. Hell, they can compete for another WS without Teixeira.

Sure.... but is a below average bat worth 2 top 50 draft picks and a
multi year contract above 10 million per season?
No other team has any interest in signing Varitek.

Pray someone offers him something and take the pick's?

Why do you want Tek back?
He has a bad arm and he cannot hit.

If there were no draft picks involved, I would offer him 5 million for 1 year, knowing that nobody would top that offer.

The fool should have taken arbitration.

I don;t want him back for the reason I posted at the beginning of this thead.......

You are right, he's been awful in those situations. The money isn't a factor for me because they can afford it and a Varitek signing will not prevent them from making other moves.

The picks would be nice but I wouldn't get too caught up in them. I'm just happy we are getting compensation for Byrd.

We agree on Byrd.

I don't agree, but I respect your view on Varitek.
I think this issue has been covered.

Nice chatting with you !

He can't lay down a sacrafice bunt to save his mother either.
