The National Football Post | Lions Can CB Kelly

**Note - Just wondering. His stats are definitely nothing to get excited about.
Brian Kelly

The Detroit Lions terminated the three-year, $8.5 million contract of Brian Kelly on Tuesday, a source told ESPN.com.

On Sunday at Ford Field, Kelly was dressed and active for the game against the Minnesota Vikings but coaches elected not to play him.

The Lions apparently wanted to use younger cornerbacks during their final three games. Kelly now has a chance to land with a playoff team that might be looking for a cornerback who can start.

Kelly came to Detroit during the offseason to reunite with Rod Marinelli, a former Bucs defensive line coach who was popular among Bucs defensive players. Marinelli wanted veterans who knew the Bucs’ cover-two system, and Kelly appeared to be a perfect fit.

The 32-year-old Kelly spent 10 seasons with the Bucs before joining the Lions. Kelly, who received a $3.25 million bonus, won’t lose any money with the release. His $1.25 million base salary was guaranteed when he made the Lions’ 53-man roster.

If he doesn’t land a job in the next three weeks, he can apply for termination pay under terms of the collective bargaining agreement and get those three remaining game checks.

Haven't you learned your lesson about over-the-hill cornerbacks who get cut from crappy teams??? Guess not...

Haha - Hey these guys all manage a few good games before they burn out. Maybe we can squeeze three good games out of him. :D

I'd have to agree with letekro on this one. I've seen what Deltha O'Neal can do after being cut by the Bengals. Kelly used to be good (like O'Neal) but unfortunately he's past his prime now. And, he was let go from a team even worse than the Bengals. No thanks on this one. Let Wilhite get the playing time under his belt.

Does he have two healthy legs??.. if he does sign him, just about anyone is better than Deltha...

[ARTRELL]Yeah, every vet on a crappy team is the same and will never help!!![/HAWKINS]

The Pats don't play any Tampa 2 D, do they?

On the surface, it sounds like a bad fit. IMHO

This is the more important factor, I agree.

he will end up with the colts

He couldn't be any worse than Delta O'Neal...Brian Kelly would be taking O'neal's spot. I think BB has seen enough of O'Neal, i would be shoked if we didn't make a run at him.

I'd be shocked if we did.....

I understand why everyone is ripping O'Neal, but didn't he also have two game-saving plays in narrow wins against the Chiefs and the Rams? If having him is bad, how much worse would not having him have been?

I think we've been pretty harsh, but I think he's clearly wearing down fast.

i have no problem signing anyone who can help the team

FINALLY we can win Super Bowl XXXVII!

Oh wait you weren't talking about time-traveling?

Tougher sale. But then again, I'm pretty sure that an EMS dummy is behind Deltha O'Neal on the depth chart. Is he better than an EMS dummy?

For $219,000 for three weeks, probably a playoff contender will grab him. Don't forget he needs to clear waivers.

If BB thinks he can help this team get the playoffs I'm down.

Given how losing a player to IR is a weekly occurence, might as well sign him now just to stay ahead of the curve.

But he was also a far better CB than O'Neal was....so is his talent floor lower or higher than O'Neal's? I'd vote for higher and thus worth a flyer.

??????? Based on what? I know Kelly was never more than a 2 at Tampa. I don't know much about O'Neal, but he has 34 interceptions and 2 ProBowls.

O'Neal looks clueless at times to me, but saying a journeyman is far greater than someone who has been judged as the best once and put up serious numbers seems like a real stretch.
