Michael Johnson, DE Georgia Tech

I watched this guy Saturday against a very good Georgia team, and he was very disciplined, he kept his edge, and was not just a speed rusher. He played more like a 3-4 OLB than a 4-3 DE. He is a phyiscal freak 6'7" 250 with good speed (4.6). He is very tough to throw over (ask BC) and is a kick blodking machine.

Chances are, after their bowl game and the combine he will be out of the Pats range, but if somehow they could get him, I could see BB having a fieldday with a talent like this.

And how do you know that he has no interest in playing the run? Just because he plays defensive end?

15 TFLs sounds like he gets behind the line of scrimmage pretty often and takes down the ballcarrier. It doesn't sound like he's averse to 'playing the run' at all.

Crable has similar physical characteristics to Michael Johnson in terms of length and size. But which player is more athletic and more explosive in rushing the passer? The Pats need a passrusher pretty badly.

The other thing to consider is this - if the Pats draft MJ and both MJ and Crable pan out the Pats linebacker corps is MJ-Guyton-Mayo-Crable. And your book end OLBs are both 6'7" and can bat down a lot of balls in addition to being athletic. Meanwhile, the interior of your defense has a lot of speed as well in Guyton/Mayo. That's a complete revamp/upgrade of your LB corps within 2 draft classes.

I do think we will draft a OLB high. It takes time to develop them and that is a high draft pick sitting on the bench. also we have redd who is the same size and since colvin left we do not have the smaller 245-250 LB OLB who can speed rush .woods is in the same mould and guyton is playing some OLB in a few snaps.

We have crabel and redd in their next year along with vrabel , ad that is 4 big guys in OLB all big and heavy. i hope woods and guton can give that speed rushing end we sorely miss against bigger slower tackles.

if guyton does pan out we need one more ILB as of late he in along with bru mayo and vrabel. so the bru spot is still need to be developed.

I know he has no interest in playing the run, because I watch him play. People can read scouting reports until they are cross-eyed, however actions speak louder than words, especailly on the football field.

Skippy has done such a tremendous job with that program. It wouldn't surprise me to see more and more ECU kids getting drafted next year and in the years ahead.

He really has, I'm down here and have season tickets and he has built up a bad program extremely fast. We have 3 good LB's coming out this year, and a whole lot of good seniors if anyone can I would look at some of the ECU seniors on this list:

I don't know how good is Michael Johnson, but I think he was kept on the bench at Georgia Tech (last season) by a undrafted rookie free agent that is on the Patriots practice squad (Darrell Robertson). Robertson had similar stats in his senior year and was compared to Jason Taylor i.e.

During the regular season, he made 33 tackles (22 solo) with 6 1/2 sacks and ranked third in the ACC with 16 stops for losses. He caused two fumbles and recovered two others, returning one for a touchdown. He produced 16 third-down stops and in 50 running plays directed at him, the left defensive end held the opposition to minus-57 yards.

Compares To: JASON TAYLOR-Miami...Some teams feel that Robertson lacks the bulk to face up to the bigger offensive tackles at the next level, but, like Taylor, Robertson is blessed with excellent quickness, good balance and body control and very active hands to counter. He is best playing on the move, as his bulk issues do come into play when trying to combat double teams, but he has that lateral agility and closing burst to get serious consideration as a strong-side linebacker or edge rusher. Those experts that might question his ability to stuff the run need to digest this fact -- in 101 running plays, the opponents have gained only 33 yards and one first down against him.

And he 'disinterestedly' made 15 TFLs? How do you do that exactly? did the running backs disinterestedly run straight into his arms? I don't know how many games of him you've watched, but how do you explain the numbers based on the 'eye test' alone? Did you have game film on him as well?

All we need to do is send BB a tape of Barwin at TE. That should do the trick.

Will Moore is my guy, but he won't last long enough. I'd love to see Darrius Heyward-Bey in Foxboro, but I don't think a 1st round WR is in the cards either. Therefore I'll put in for one order of Vince Oghobaase, if he comes out.

If you're rushing the QB nearly every play, 15 TFLs in 11 games or so isn't really a huge number...I'm sure he met up with some RBs getting a handoff.

I'd be interested in how many total tackles he got, and even that could be deceiving. However, making 15 tackles for loss is unimpressive if you're getting your ass kicked by a tight end on every other play, or if teams make a habit of running right at you.

I haven't watched him enough to answer those questions one way or the other, but the stats you present don't make a case for him on their own.
