Anyone have any idea why the Patriots can't stop the 3rd and long?

Is there nothing they could try? The bend but don't break is broken on 3rd and long.

Re: Third and long.....

Weak pass rush, holes in the secondary.

Re: Third and long.....

doesnt matter if its third and long or third and short we still suck:(

Re: Third and long.....

i was joking about this with my father earlier. I told him that Id rather our Defense have a 3rd and 3 or less than a 3rd and 10. We cannot stop it. Partially due to the fact we rarely get pessure on the QB and partly because our DBs

Re: Third and long.....

We seem to be able to stop 3rd and short, if the opponent runs, but anything that requires a pass, seems to be a guaranteed first down. Really, really bad, we can't get the defense off the field.

I would prefer a 3rd and 2 anyday to a 3rd and 10.

A 3rd and 10 is almost a gimme.

Re: Third and long.....

I don't know why we don't blitz 6-8 on those third and longs. The only thing the QB can do is hit the hot route, but chances are the guys who aren't blitzing can make the stop before the receiver gets to the sticks.

Re: Third and long.....

Well at least we looked better in the red zone. They kicked alot of FG's today. I can only pin 16 points on the defense, thats not bad vs. a good offense and when you consider our offense didn't sustain drives very well today today + 2 long returns on their part.

I'm still banging my head against the wall as to why they haven't blitzed yet, what is holding them back and why? What's the worst that could happen, a team picks up a critical 3rd and 15 ? Mmmmmm.......

Not that we have the defensive pass rushers of the Steelers, but I hope someone on our staff was watching how they scheme their blitzes and learn from it.

Q. If you are an opposing quarterback facing 3rd and long against the Pats, what is the surest way of getting a first down.
A. Throw it to the receiver who is being covered by Deltha O'Neill who gives a 7 to 10 yard cushion and continues to backpedal until the receiver makes his move.

This was the guy who Brady loved to burn. Denver got rid of him as soon as they could. When Pats got him this year, it pretty much said : Patriots are not going to have a dominant defense this year.

Isn't that the truth! A soft zone defense without a pass rush is not going to cut it against the elite teams in the NFL. Period!

Pure and simple, it's a lack of pass rush. The Giants proved last year that you can have a mediocre secondary but it could still look good if you are capable of generating a pass rush. For whatever reason, we cannot and have rarely been able to do it all season. Even when we install blitz packages, they are picked up. I said in the game thread that there is NO excuse for us not to be able to get to Big Ben at least three times. In the entire game, we managed one sack against the most porous offensive line in the NFL. I don't know whether to blame on AD being out of the line-up or just bad scheming. If I were to guess, however, I'd say it's the former. AD was our pass rush specialist with two rookies pretty much starting in the LB corps (Mayo and Guyton). That seems to be the area where we get lit up the most.

The bottom line is that not even a Champ Bailey or an Antonio Cromartie could cover the most mediocre receiver for 10-15 seconds. It's impossible. Pass rush is IMPERITIVE in the game today and we just can't seem to generate much of one on a consistent basis.

On Ward's 3rd and long catch in the 2nd quarter he was lined up in the slot. There were 2 DB's lind up with the 2 WR's split out wide, 2 OLB's on the LOS, and 2 safeties. Why the hell is noboy up on Ward??? Ward gets a free release and runs a hitch to the first down marker. Meriweather meets him a yard pass the first down line.

Is this really the design of the call? I was yelling Time out as soon as I saw ward by himself. Is Mrriweather supposed to be picking these guys up earlier???? I have no explanation as to why there is not someone at the line pressing ward on that play.

This is the same setup as the Jets 3rd and long. Keller was free to run a go right to the 1st down line, where, again, Merriweather is there to escort him to a first down.

The Pats play a two gap system. The D line's responsibility is to stop trhe run and stretch the play to the sideline where the LB's can make a play. They do not rush the passer as much as they plug holes. The OLB's are supposed to rush the passer.

pass rush vanished last year in the eagles game when colvin went down and it never returned. O'neal gives a 10yd cushion on 3rd and 7 and the worst thing is he has taught hobbs to do the same thing our secondary plays so far off the reciever that every pass is a first down.

I have taken to not looking at the TV on third down when we're on D.

We just need to be...I don't know...better. But I am not holding my breath on O'Neal suddenly clicking, and there isn't anyone behind him who I would even be up for giving a shot to.

Yep. Every pass is a first down just like every post on PatsFans.com is the same. I understand.
