Wheatley - lets hope hes studying the video and will be at peak next year

Wilhite? Does htis kid suck?

Deltha O Neil, Cab 6, Foxboro Yellow Cab in 2009

any good early second round picks? Any free agents coming out next season? Thsi secondary is a bag os shiat and must be renovated. Brandon Merriweather isnt the mean and nasaty Harrison type - too smiley and friendly out there.

I agree that the secondary has been terrible and I HOPE the Patriots didn't waste a 2nd round pick on Tyrone Wheatley. 2nd round picks need to become starters and need to reach that status fairly quickly. The fact that Wilhite is contributing on special teams is nice, but he's behind guys like Deltha O'Neal, Lewis Sanders, and maybe even Jason Webster at CB. That's not exactly an encouraging sign for his future at the position.

I don't dislike James Sanders as much as some posters, but I still ask: What does he bring to the table? Very few big plays, and he's not a great cover guy either. You can certainly do worse than Sanders at safety, but I would hope an upgrade would be a priority after CB.

I will also say that the run defense was a disappointment today. Our front 7 got pushed around today.

The no.1 need for this team is a big time pass rusher...we can't keep allowing teams to convert 3rd and 8 plus so frequently.

Lewis Sanders missed a couple of key tackles today as well...

Totally agree.

I agree, a solid pass rush makes the secondary look so much better.

May we see a DE drafted this year to initially develop as a rusher?

Why is it on third and 300, there is always a guy @ 304 yards and no one within 5 yards of him? WHYWHYWHY????

can't our DB's play a little closer on 3rd and long?

Malcolm Jenkins is the guy we need and we'll have the ammo to move up to get him.

As far as James Sanders goes, again, I've said it many times, he's a 3rd safety in this league, he's not a starter, he's a solid backup. He was a 4th round pick who has given it all he could, he's limited. He is really never around the football, takes bad angles on tackling lanes and simply is there to make sure that he keeps things in front of him. Unfortunately, he has been a major part of the 3rd and long problem in this defense. He is consistently late to the play/football. Again, he's a backup and we really need to upgrade that spot in February/April.

if we don't use the first rounder or second rounder for a guy who can pass rush then it will be another wasted year for the defense.

I don't care if we get a one trick pony pass rusher.

we need someone who can come in on 3rd and long to get to the qb.

ideally we need 3-4 of these guys like the giants had osi, tuck, strahan, and kiwanuka

you can never have enough pass rushers.

Some nice solid depth/development/starters would be nice.

Hoard picks, make the usual good ones at

DB, LB, OL

I've been saying for ages the team has got to do a better job shoring up these positions with the draft. Every year, I hope this'll be the year they get some new blood on the OL, at least.

I mean....damn.

Pass rushers can be found in any round, you mention osi & tuck (neither 1st rounders), jared allen was a 4th rounder I believe. Even the best pass rusher in Pats history, Andre Tippet, was a second rounder.

merriweather is the only bright spot in the secondary, hobbs plays way off the ball and his size says he should be a nickel back. We need a shut down corner, safety we need a hitter with experience Lawyer Milloy anyone??

as much as the secondary stinks, it would help if we got a little pass rush. put champ bailey in our secondary and he will struggle. the WRs have way too much time. look at the giants. their secondary isnt great, but their front 7 gets pressure, so the DBs dont have to cover as much and their flaws are hidden

The Giants secondary is actually as mediocre as it gets. Without that pass rush, they would be lit up. Aaron Ross is about the only real good player there. The kid they got from Miami (whose name escapes me now) could be good but the jury is still out on him. That defense would be SCARY with an elite secondary.

1. Stud CB
2. Stud pass rusher
3. Big hitter at SS [Tank?]

All ready to step in immediately. Too much to ask?

I like Jenkins a lot, but we need an OLB to get pressure. If we are moving up in the draft, George Selvie would be far more valuable to our team than Jenkins. Think of a taller James Harrison. Amazing motor, great at shedding blocks, quick off the snap. He could be a great OLB in the NFL

+1. Sanders is below average, at best.

I don't think getting Taylor Mays on board will make a difference to the Pats' line-up....The Pats desperately need Tom Brady back in the squad... I'm dying for him to come back. Without him, the Pats dont have a chance... :(

What does Tom Brady have to do with our defense or the draft? Nothing.
Tom Brady will be back and as far as I know he's also signed to a Patriots contract. So let's talk about improving the rest of the team.
You can go ahead and pine over Tom all you want but it adds nothing productive to the conversation. Please think before you post.

Draft countdown has the Pats taking Taylor Mays at pick #23.

Draft Countdown - 2009 NFL Mock Draft

Could be a really good fit. Gotta love that size/speed combo for a SS.

Earlier in the year Mays was playing FS and Ellison was playing SS for USC. I think Ellison got hurt and maybe Mays is filling in at SS now, but at FS Mays' lack of coverage skills got exposed a bit.

If you like Mays size/speed combo, check out Chancellor of Va. Tech. They are similar in size and speed, but Chancellor hits more and can cover better.

I still like the SS for Clemson the best of all of them that I have seen this year. I see him as having the potential to be a thumper in the NFL.
