Re: Structure contract

Why would Cassel sign such a contract?
Don't bother to ask this question. People keep saying "sign him to this" and "franchise and tag" as though Cassel will just go along with it.

The Pats will get a 3rd round comensatory pick when Mangini signs Cassel.

I'm calling your Mom and having her wash your mouth out with soap!

I don't believe he'd make more than Brady. I think Brady and P. Manning are the top 2 QB's in terms of pay, and the franchise tag averages the salaries of the top 5 at each position, so he'd have to get less than Brady.

I thought Rothlisberger made the most? Maybe just this year...

Just one more reason to tag and trade him, controlling where he lands. Players go along with it because while they may want every last nickle they could get in FA, they want to play and they want a long term deal and some love from someone. Those who chafe at being tagged hold out or demand a trade. OK. Not much leverage for Cassel there since one involves not pre emptively signing the tag (can't be fined until you do) and the other is the basis for mutual consent (play/sign me long term or trade me)... Once Cassel signed a tag he'd have to report as a backup to collect his $14M. They won't tag him if they believe that's a scenario he'd be eager to persue. From what we know of him to date, it won't be.

Bill has a saying - take away a players stage, not his money, if you really want to hurt him. Matt's had a taste of life on the stage - he's not going back voluntarily, ever.

Big Ben's deal has an average cap value of $13,067,500 which would make him 4th on the below list

Dallas Cowboys Forums - CowboysZone.com

USATODAY.com

lists in descending order the QBs by how much cash they took him this year.

Can't access the cowboyszone page without registering...could you list the top 5?

That USA list would be a better resource if they added columns for total contract value and guaranteed money. Folks get pretty confused who's getting what between cap, yearly earnings, signing bonus or recently lack thereof, guaranteed money, implicitly guaranteed money, first three average and total contract value...

I don't understand why people continue to under estimate the ability of Belichick and Pioli to make room under the cap to accomodate a franchise tag for Cassel. If the Pats franchise him, Casel will either agree to the tag, and get traded or not play like Samuel threatened.

If those last sentences made a damn bit of difference, Mangini would still be our DC. McDaniels is more ready than Mangini was.

I think that kind of proves my point, as well as Lane Kiffin. Mangini spent two years underwater as head coach. This is the first year he looks competent. Maybe Favre is coaching the team.

Don't ignore the free agents that they bought during the offseason. Without them Ratgini would be the same back stabbing bum he was last year.

Jets went 10-6 in his first year. Pretty good for a rookie hc.

I'm in the camp that the Pats will tag & trade him. The pats have been trying to do this since BB arrived - sign a qb and trade him, ala Ron Wolf.

Cassel won't have any choice but to sign. They'd control his rights until at least July whether he signed or not.
