Detroit wants to steal him from us. Could we demand they give us a 1st round pick? Didnt Kraft give the Jets a 1st round pick for Belichick? Im confused, how does this sheet work? Imagine a 1st round pick for Cassel and a 1st round pick for Pioli? Three 1st round picks! Total domination!! <muwahahaha!>

pioli has had chances to leave here ,he likes where he is stop listening to the media and no we would not get compensation for him

why couldnt we ask for a draft pick for Pioli?

I dont think that is going to happen. If I remember correctly, I believe the Patriots were forced to give up a draft pick for Bellicheck because he was under contract with the Jets and we illegally tampered with him. If Pioli were to leave, it would depend on whether he was under contract. If he was not, he is free to leave as he wishes I believe. Maybe someone can corroborate all of what I just said

After the Gruden trade they put a stop to trading draft picks for office personnel.

Pioli's not going to Detroit. Even if he wanted to leave there'd be 30 other choices better than the Lions.

We can't get a draft pick for him because he does not have final say on personnel, and he would in Detroit, so it's considered a step-up. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I am.

Reportedly Pioli is working hard to extract a top draft pick from a team that's vying to snatch him away from the Patriots. Don't get your hopes up too high though... its rumored that once he secures the draft pick for the Patriots from his future team for compensation for himself, he's going to work it out so he gets the draft pick back for his new team, so that he can use it to begin rebuilding.

I wouldn't put it past him either - he's THAT good!

Michael Crabtree, Malcom Jenkins and Rey Maualuga, I'm not greedy am I?

Does Detroit have two 1sts to trade for Pioli and Cassel? :D

Talk about a good way to rebuild a franchise.

AFAIK, this is correct. It's the same (sort of) reason why the Pats can't get a draft pick if McDaniels takes a HC job somewhere else--or stop him, for that matter.

Actually, that isn't so cut and dry. Supposably he has verbage in his contract that makes him a final decision maker.

I think the discussion is moot. If he didn't take a king's randsom from Seattle or take the Giants' job, I seriously doubt he would take the Detriot job. The problem with that team goes all the way to the owner. The guy is too disinterested in his own team. Plus with the Ford family's finances in doubt due to the fact that Ford is tetering on bankrupcy, it isn't all that clear what the future holds for the Lions' ownership.

Similar to asking for a date with a supermodel, your answer would be "No".

Pioli is not desperate, so he won't go to loserville - Detroit.

Why does Detroit or anybody hafta give us a pick for signing Pioli to a promotion?
Answer: they do not.

No, the Patriots couldn't get a draft pick for Pioli because the league put the kabosh on it a few years ago. I believe after the Jon Gruden to Tampa mess.

Also, Pioli has said he just wants to be in New England.

See my earlier post to Guns. They talked about putting the kibosh on it after Gruden and frown on mega draft pick for HC trades but they still allow trading picks or Herm wouldn't be in KC...who had to give the JETS a 4th for permission to talk to and sign him.

and that was for the same job, not a promotion.

Worked out great for KC

Never heard that - Bill has the final say here. Kraft tried to get the league to allow teams to designate top execs other than those having final/total authority but got nowhere. I think it's moot for as long as he wants it to be, and what people fail to account for is he may never choose to move on... What he may have is an understanding or language that says if/when this HC leaves the authority passes to him...

It was discussed several times in the past. Word is that Pioli has the chief decision maker tag eventhough it is Belichick technically calls the shots and they both approach it as co-decision makers. Basically the theory is that Pioli would be more likely to bolt than Belichick. It is a contract thing, not an actual heiarchy thing.

I agree it is moot. Pioli has had many chances to go somewhere else. Several far more attractive than Detriot and he hasn't made a move. I don't expect him to leave now.
