Defensive Snapshot - Anyone "notice" Vince Redd?

Every little bit of playing time Redd gets makes it easier for

Pioli/Belichick to evaluate the Pats needs at OLB. Will Crable,

Redd, or Woods be able to replace Mike Vrabel after 2009?

What are Alexander and Woods worth in the way of tender

offers since they are RFAs after this year? The Pats will have

to tender them more than the minimum to receive any compensation.

A third for Samuel seems right, although he might be considering a 3rd for Cassel. For symmetry, I'd like to think that we get a 1st for Cassel and therefore 2 picks in each of the first three rounds.

Five picks? The Pats have their own in the first three rounds as well as SD's second. I assume you added a compensatory for A. Samuel in the 3rd based on the size of his contract and not his 3 Ints this year......

"After all if you can't beat out your college competition , how are you going to play in the NFL?", is a common refrain of Scouts. My answer is: "Ask Matt Cassel!"

And Ronnie Brown. And Brandon Jacobs. And Mark Brunell. And Brad Johnson. And Tom Brady....

We're pretty close to 100% of getting a third for Samuel...and probably the first comp pick awarded.

OLB (5) - FULL UP
Woods is clearly worth the $2.2M level tender. We need him next year as the first player off the bench. I don't think that we will see enough from Redd for the rest of the season to make a judgement whether he will be able to replace Vrabel in 2009. We should be able to assess whether Redd is worth having as a solid member of the Special Teams for 2009 and 2010. Crable will be evaluated next year. So for me, we know what we have at OLB for 2009 and will see next year what we need for 2010. The big question mark for this offseason at LB is to see whether we sign a long-term contract with Woods.

ILB (3) - (FULL UP)
We are set with our starters: Mayo and Guyton. We have one backup in Bruschi. Even if he is the #4 or #5, he is worth keeping for the last year of his contract.

ANY MORE (0-2) - ????
Well, we have had at least one STer linebacker for many, many years. We might keep Alexander OR Izzo but not both. After all, Woods and Redd should be expected to be solid STers. We could also bring in a developmental ILB and/or keep one on the Practice Squad. I suspect that Izzo will retire and we will tender Alexander. The team seems to like Alexander as a special teamer.

But the compensatory pick for Cassel would be in '10 unless you're counting a
franchise tag/trade to get you a third rounder in '09. It doesn't seem worth the aggravation to go thru franchising, and trading to get the same third rounder albeit a year later unless the intent is to franchise/trade him to an NFC team keeping him out of the conference. If all you're going to get is a 3rd, not worth it. Make it a 2nd rounder or a first and it becomes worth it.
Look at how much a crapshoot of choosing QBs in the first round is (Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf) and trading for a guy who can play in this league becomes more of a safe bet, especially if you're throwing boatloads of $$ at him.

Don't forget 2008 draftee Rudd an ILB presently on IR. An outside shot of course but in the mix, unless the Pats 'Lua' him in Feb. :)

I also forgot their latest OLB signing to the practice squad,

Darrell Robertson.
