Patriots-Jets tiebreakers made easy

Steelers will win their division and I think they beat us with Matt Light likely suspended. BAL will probably be swept by PIT this year.

Colts have locked up a wild card spot(probably the higher seeded wild card), and don't count those lucky %^$$ers from winning the division. TEN is headed for a late season collapse, I have this feeling. DET may even make it interesting against them on Thanksgiving.

The question is who wants to be in the playoffs from the AFC west? Neither team wants it. I think we should root for SD to get in because that will give Indy a tougher matchup in the wildcard round. I would puke if I saw Indy in the super bowl. Of course the zebras are always screwing the Chargers.

The Pats will get the lower seeded wildcard and will probably have to play at the Steelers instead of the Jets. The Steelers have a tougher road than the Jets do so this will prevent them from getting a bye.

First round byes will be TEN and NYJ.

Likely playoff matchups:

Saturday night game: IND at DEN
Sunday late afternoon game: NE at PIT
I would not count the Jets out of a lull after the BIG win. I agree the Titans are sliding..Balt is tough though..but a LOT of football is left.

great post,

that really does make the tie breaker scenario pretty simple

Well, it gets a bit easier if it's played in a dome in Toronto.

Check the schedule: Miami at Buffalo, Rogers Centre, Toronto.

Damn those Canadians!
Damn them to Hell!
Ruining our national sport like that.
Girly mon domes.

Bottom line after sunday if we and the jets win..

Hope the Jets lose to the fish or the bills, and we win out..

yeah the tiebreakers only matter once we are tied....right now we are not :(
i was hoping we could upset the steelers and the broncos could spring a surprise but they lost to oakland.
on the other hand...jets lost to oakland too..so ..
lets hope we have a good post thanksgiving season.

Short and sweet....if we want to win the division, the Jets have to drop 2 games the rest of the way. If those are 2 division games, terrific, then we only need to go 4-1 (but MUST beat Buffalo). If only one of the Jets' losses is in the division, then we need to go 5-0.

so this reiterates the obvious we are routing for Dolphins and bills when they face the Jets again.
I think yes, but with a caveat..do we really wish to tie either of these teams? If they also have another loss..the absolutely...if either team is in a resurgence..ir gets tricky..Miami would win if they tied with the Pats with common games pct..SO maybe not. The last game Mia/NY might be for it all...with NE/Buff being key as well. I HOPE we see some upsets of either so they are not playing for a playoff spot circa 02.

There is NO way the Pats win the division if the Jets go 4-1 and lose ONE division game, even if the Pats win out. All tiebreakers up to strength of victory would be even:

Head-to-head: 1-1
Common: 10-2
Conference: 8-4

jets already have two losses against common oppononents - San Diego and Oakland. A loss against either Miami or Buffalo (also common opponents) would be their third. As stated before, NE cannot lose a common opponent tiebreaker with the jets.

Ah correct.

Isn't Common games down the line one?? What about the conference record? The Jets have 1 against Den...while the Pats have 2, Pitts and Oak. (With ANother looko..and a correction...oops....common games is BEFORE conference.. SO the common opponenets would add in the NFC games as well as the other 4 AFC games from the West?? So would that mean if tied the Pats would win that tie breaker??
The "common opponent" rule has seemed to me to be irrelevent ever since 2002 when they went to the 4x4 conferences and the current scheduling system, because in fact there are only ever 4 games not played in common between division foes, including the 2 games between each other. So I wish they would eliminate that and jump to conference records after division records. However, note that conference records would *include* division records.

Sounds to me like we only have to root for one, which is good because I don't loathe the Bills like I do the other 2 AFC East opponents.
