San Diego #2 pick, don't forget about it

They could make the playoffs by winning the division at 8-8. Denver is also horrible.

While that is true, they had San Diego in the Wild Card possibility but you are right,Denver COULD lose their lead in the West but only 1 team will make the playoffs from the West obviously

No, what they're saying is, "San Diego is teh suck, but the Donkeys suck almost as badly, so the Chargers might make the playoffs anyways."

As of today, it would be the 40th overall pick. Because the pick moves up one slot in the second round (and whoever pick first in any group of teams with identical records moves to the bottom of that group while everyone else moves up one slot.

Too bad they wasted that 5th rd pick on Slater, or this could really end up a nice trade.

San Diego is a team that can easily "mail it in". Funny how this goes, I thought that Rivers showed a ton of guts last year playing in the AFCCG, but it just has not carried over.

Are you worried about their pick getting too good though, in terms of their own first rounder? I know it looks like they are a crap team right now, but there is still talent on that team that scares me and I worry about them adding another piece to the puzzle. Sure, they seem like a very dysfunctional family, but I dunno...

Not really. Whoever they pick we will face 0-2 times per year. Whoever we pick we have all 16+ games. If they had the number one pick overall that would be fine by me.

THAT is a good point...their loses DO really count now...I have a feeling they may only win 2 more...

Norv Turner: Great clock mnmgmnt., instead of milking the clock with 2 minutes to go,(thereby assuring no worse than going to OT) you minimize the seconds off the clock; thus giving Peyton an early XMAS gift.

You almost have to go for that two yards on fourth down. San Diego is not going to stop Indy from getting a field goal. So might as well go for it, hope you get it, run down the clock and kick your field goal or score a TD (don't score too soon).

The real question is, what do they do with the pick? Do they trade for a veteran player or keep it and draft someone?

If its' a vet, I'd hope that that player has at least 3 good years left. Maybe thats the way to go as we haven't done to well with drafting 2nd.

it would be ncie to trade this for a 2010 first rounder

san diego let go of the wrong running back

Hmmmmmmmmm, did you say Detroit. (then trade that for multiple #1's)

That's gonna be hard to do although teams do weird things on draft day - if we're going to get a #1 either this year or next it's more likely to be with Cassel moving on even if we have to add another pick. Like Cassel and this #2 for Detroit or St. Louis' #1 in 2010. Generally QB are what get #1s and this is a weak group of QB in the draft unless they all come out - and even then it's so-so.

While it is true that we have had less than stellar results with our 2nd round picks, history does not dictate whether this pick will be successful. By having access to one of the top 50 players coming out of college, there is a lot we can do with the pick. I want BB and SP (hopefully he's still there) to have the flexibility to a variety of things going into the draft. Having options is always good. Trade up for a player they covet, trade out for a future pick, stay right where they are and take what's there.
San Diego's second is an excellent hole card for a couple of old pros like BB and SP. I'm very glad we have it!
I think the 2009 draft is extremely significant to this franchise given our secondary issues, pass rush inadequacies, Bradys' injury, what may transpire in terms of potential picks from Cassel if franchised and traded, San Diegos second, a comp 3rd for Assante.
If we get a couple of breaks here and there, it could be huge!!!

We musn't forget that we will also receive a compensatory 3rd or 4th for losing Asante. Looks like we will be armed with lots of early picks to add some nice talent, especially on D.

It'll be a #3. Barring trade ups, we will have 1,2,2,3,3 which should net us a good group. We can get even more if we F&T Cassel although with all these picks I'd probably be looking to trade him for a 2010 pick if it's a round higher than we could get in this draft. We're well stocked for this year already.

I don't like the chargers, or chargers fans, but they really have been screwed over by the refs this year.

1,2,2,3,3 sounds very good. However, I see the Pats going at least to the AFCC this year and picking #29 thru 32. So in that case, we'd be talking about #30, approx #44, #62, #94, and approx #100. Great but nothing in the top half of round 1.

If by some miracle we can get a mid 1st rounder for Cassell in 2009, that would set up the board great with say #15. We'd then trade #30 or 44 into 2010. But I think we're going to have to sign and keep Cassell until we know for sure that TB is OK. In that case, the pick in a Cassell trade would be a 2010 pick anyway.

I'd love to get a higher #1 even if it meant adding a #2 to Cassel.

I'm thinking the same thing. With the amount of FAs after 2009 we will need as many draft picks as we can get.

Who would have guessed when we made that trade that we could have a top half of the round #2 in that deal ? Of course, we suck in the second round but that's another story.

SD is currently 4-7 with :

Atlanta
Oakland
@KC
@TB
Denver

upcoming. If they can just lose two of them (Atlanta, @TB are the best shots) that will make 9 losses and a top 16 pick in the second round.

Funny you should mention that BF.

Obviously, people expect the San Diego pick to be low. They are certainly talented, but...

This is year three in their unfulfilled "greatness". They collapsed like crybabies 2 years ago, firing a coach with a 14-2 record.

Played like crap most of last year (though I admired Rivers guts) with players walking all over Turner and Lady Tomlinson acting like more of a Primadona than ever.

Peyton has a bad habit of blaming, but he's the unquestioned leader, so he gets away with it.

San Diego has...

A general manager who doesn't want a strong coach and two attitude cases who happen to be the team leaders and apparently don't like each other.

I've seen more talented teams collapse due to dissension.

Stay tuned
......

Whatever they do, DON'T USE IT ON A WR!!!!. History is not on our side.
