Who would have guessed when we made that trade that we could have a top half of the round #2 in that deal ? Of course, we suck in the second round but that's another story.

SD is currently 4-7 with :

Atlanta
Oakland
@KC
@TB
Denver

upcoming. If they can just lose two of them (Atlanta, @TB are the best shots) that will make 9 losses and a top 16 pick in the second round.

THAT is a good point...their loses DO really count now...I have a feeling they may only win 2 more...

This was a 25-30 pick when we made it, IMO, now it's looking like a 12-18 pick. If that plays out it's almost like picking up a #3 for nothing as that's about what a trade up from the end of the second to the middle of the second would cost.

I kinda want Denver to win the Division now...that could really be a nice pick. San Diego could easily drop two to three of those Five.

Are you worried about their pick getting too good though, in terms of their own first rounder? I know it looks like they are a crap team right now, but there is still talent on that team that scares me and I worry about them adding another piece to the puzzle. Sure, they seem like a very dysfunctional family, but I dunno...

You're right but first I worry about the Patriots vs. the league then the Patriots vs. a specific team. With Tomlinson slowing down I'm not sure the Chargers will every be all that anyway.

Interestingly with Denver having @Jest, KC, @Car, Buff, @SD, there's a chance SD could win the division at 8-8 the way Denver is playing. I forget now if being in the playoffs automatically moves you into the bottom 12 of the first round grouping or not. If so we need Denver to stop sucking.

Based on that Oakland game, we might be hoping for a little too much.

I'm drawing a blank - we have SD's 2nd round pick? How did we get it?

Last year the Pats traded the #69 pick that they initially received from a 2007 draft day trade with Oakland to the Chargers. The Chargers used that pick for Jacob Hester, HB/FB from LSU. The Pats were initially on the phone with Shawn Crable to tell him to get ready to see his name on ESPN as they were planning to draft him there when the Chargers called and offered an '08 5th rounder and a '09 2nd rounder for that pick.

The 5th round pick ended up being Slater after a trade up.

I'm not too worried on the basis that the Chargers are still being coached by Norv Turner. And that is good for a couple of losses per season in and of itself. I think the ideal situation would be for the Chargers to pick around #12 or 13 in the 1st as that is the bottom end of the blue and red chippers and the start of the great undifferientated masses where each team sees their own beauty from about there to the mid-50s. That would give the Pats their first rounder in the mid to late 20s, or hopefully @ #32, and something around #44 as well, followed up by #60ish. That would provide either a good depth infusion or a reasonable chance to do a whole lot of moving around and moving up.

Thanks, I remember now. That's awesome to have a mid-2nd in addition to our regular complement of picks.

True, there window of opportunity might revolve around LdT.

I would love to have 3 picks between 32-64 (Though I should emphasize the #32 part would be best :D ). But I agree, as you say, a mid 2nd rounder is a great asset to BB and Pioli whether they use it as a pick or a chip.

I posted this in '06 to explain the rules. The short answer is "no."

Forgot all about this trade, thank god for Norv Turner..

What I don't understand and this is a little bit off topic for this thread but did anyone see ESPN show the teams that are in contention for the playoffs in the AFC which included SD at the bottom alive in thier estimation with a 4-7 mark?

Now I know that SD is not eliminated yet but why even consider them in contention now? - 9-7 is NOT getting it done for making the playoffs,plain and simple

San Diego is done,finished,caput,bye bye,gone....

They could make the playoffs by winning the division at 8-8. Denver is also horrible.
