BB, Pees and Capers have been around the block a few times.

they know the Defense must improve significantly for the Patriots to contend.

I believe that some major changes are ahead, includingpossibly switching to 4-3 and markedly increasing blitzing and confusing alignments.

the only way to cover for the DBs is markedly increase the pressure up front

Didn't we start the Chargers game in 4-3 and bail on it quickly?

We're not switching to 4-3 end of story. I don't know how many times I've heard people speculate on this, its not gonna happen, we'll go out and find some outside line backers who fit our system (like Adalius two years ago) and try to plug them in and we'll draft defense heavy this year. We're not gonna have an elite D every year its just not possible

Bump and run. Screw up receiver and QB timing. Give the pass rush more time.

Why take players whose skills are the best for 3-4 and try to fit them into a 4-3??? Practice Squad time....

I agree. We should completely abandon the philosophy that won Belichick five rings because of one slightly above average season.

And we should cut our 34 NT.

I thought our defense has gone through a major overhaul this season? we have two new starting db's, 3 new lb's

how much overhaul do you want?

Exactly. There's a much bigger difference between 3-4 and 4-3 than just the number of D-linemen and the number of LBs.

I don't think we're that far away from having a drastically better defense. I know we have a pretty big list of needs, but I think we have a good chance of addressing them from a combination our current young players, free agency and/or the draft. Even if those three sources only produce improvements at two DB positions, I think we'll see the defense as a whole unit perform much better.

the defense needs to eat Colon Blow

Haven't you predicted a wholesale switch to the 4-3 for like the past 4 years and its not happened.. Why can't you understand that its not going to happen. The DBs are only part of the problem. The other part is that the Patriots game plans haven't called for marked pressure on the QB and the Front 7 haven't been able to create it consistently.

Going to a 4-3 isn't going to markedly increase the pressure up front.

No 4-3. Pees simply needs to mix things up more, whip out some confusionater.

If Dean Pees could make this defense into a great defense with a scheme, he would have by now.

DaBruinz, my bud. Well he played about 95% at ROLB and got a junk sack at the end of the half. Chad took the sack instead of throwing a pick, smart play by the QB. 100% coaching mistake having him try to cover a WR.

Little info on Vrable before Phins game I thought I pass onto you. This is not from me from the www.weei.com

Hi Felger,

I think it's about time that the Patriots look to replace both Vrabel and Bruschi and address the cornerback situation. I think the front seven should be the top priority this off season because it could also help that secondary. The pass rush is inconsistent at best and Vrabel in particular has shown over the course of this year and last year's playoffs that he is no longer an impact player. For proof of that, just look at his sack totals this year compared to last year. The domino effect of Vrabel's drop off is that the Patriots defense is in the bottom third in third-down efficiency and among the worst in red-zone defense.

A: The Pats rank 27th in the NFL in third-down defense (43 percent) and 29th in red zone defense (62.1 TD percentage). That’s a system-wide issue. You can’t just blame Vrabel, although his stat line is getting downright scary, with just two sacks on the season, both coming Week 1 against Kansas City. After a 12.5-sack campaign last year, Vrabel has now gone over two months without a single sack. His current nine-game drought is by far the longest of his Patriots career. If you factor in Week 17 in 2007 and the Pats three playoff games that year (no sacks in any of those games), Vrabel has now gone without a sack in 13 of his last 14 games. Not what you’re looking for. That said, I wouldn’t give up on him. I think an offseason shoulder surgery has affected him. He’s no spring chicken at 33, but he’s not done, either. Bruschi is much closer to the end than Vrabel. But to your overall point, if the Pats don’t draft a single offensive player for another two years I’d be fine with it.

I think after sunday the team rankings have to be worse than before this. I think the Phins were 4-4 in the red zone. I don't know about 3rd down.

I certainly hope the New England Patriots draft heavily on defense in 2009.

Hey SFBs, and yes, you are a SFBs, Vrabel didn't play 95% at ROLB this game. He and Woods were regularly switching sides. But you want to know something else? They were both regularly dropping back into coverage and the ILBs were the ones rushing the QB. Yes, there was the occasional play that the OLB rushed, but they didn't put a lot of pressure on in general.

As for you dumb arse info, whoop dee do.. You still haven't provided anything that I didn't already know and hadn't already figured into my opinion. So, do everyone a favor and stop trying to show me up. All it does is make you look foolish.

*ROFLMAO* OOOOoooooo.. An internet tough guy. Does the fact that your standing as a police officer means nothing in here make you feel impotent? Heck, your little tirade makes you look like a friggin punk, not a police officer. If you don't like what you've earned, maybe you should change your own style. You are the one who started attacking me in the other thread with your BS claims.

I am happy talking football. Unfortunately for you, you attempted to hijack the thread because of your own personal little vendetta. I was on topic. You weren't. Maybe you should try staying on it from time to time. You might actually earn the respect you erroneously think you deserve.
