then what do we need to happen to the jets for us to be the AFC EAST champs?

just need the jets to lose a division game right?

they need to lose 2 games. or one in the division. right?

If we win out, and the Jets lose one division game we win the division based on a better common-game record.

Let's just get in the playoffs! Although, winning out for the division would be good for a first round bye, most likely. It sucks...the Pats could win out, and if the Jets still win the east, the Pats will most likely have tied for the second best record but will have a first round road game because of the wild card.

The optimal choice is to have the Patriots finish with a better record, which would require the Jets to lose 2 games regardless of opponent. In a tie, we have to go through the procedures:

NFL Tie-Breaking Procedures

TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION

If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.
Two Clubs

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in common games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
12. Coin toss

1. Head-to-head is a draw at 1-1, so next tiebreaker is necessary.
2. As it stands, the Jets have only lost 1 division game with 2 left on their plate (both home games against the Dolphins and Bills). The Jets would have to lose one of these. If that happens and they're tied...
3. Goes by common opponents. The Patriots have played 8 games with common opponents (6-2 with 4 more common games left), while the Jets have played 7 (5-2 with 5 more common games left). Under the scenario presented, the Jets have lost one of the two remaining division games, as mentioned in #2. That would put the Pats ahead of the Jets in common opponent record, and give them the tiebreaker.

I'll buy that, good post.

Does the winner of the division get an automatic 1st round bye?

Edit: I believe so.

PS: Congrats on a great W today.

Does the winner of the division get an automatic 1st round bye?

Among the four division winners, the two with the best record get the 1st round bye. The remaining two host the wildcard teams in the 1st round.

And not to muddy the waters further, but depending on how the Colts do tonight, if we DON'T win the division title here's what we're looking at, noting that there are two other 7-4 teams with games that don't look all that tough

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM
If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.

If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.
If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.
Two Clubs
Head-to-head, if applicable.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
Strength of victory.
Strength of schedule.
Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best net points in conference games.
Best net points in all games.
Best net touchdowns in all games.
Coin toss.
Three or More Clubs
(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of applicable two-club format.)

Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.
Head-to-head sweep. (Applicable only if one club has defeated each of the others or if one club has lost to each of the others.)
Coin toss
When the first Wild-Card team has been identified, the procedure is repeated to name the second Wild-Card, i.e., eliminate all but the highest-ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. In situations where three or more teams from the same division are involved in the procedure, the original seeding of the teams remains the same for subsequent applications of the tie breaker if the top-ranked team in that division qualifies for a Wild-Card berth.

So supposing the Colts win tonight, and the playoffs were next week, what would be the result? Colts would be ahead of the Pats because of head to head, but where would the Ravens end up?

If Disco Volante's projections are right, it would put the Ravens ahead of the Patriots for the wildcard.

The Colts would be ahead of the Patriots/Ravens due to beating both of them this season.

The Ravens (6-3) would be ahead of the Patriots (5-4) due to a better conference record.
