Fox Sports: Parcells vs. Belichick neck and neck for now

Re: Fox Sports: Parcells vs Belichick neck and neck for now.

Where is the nice read here? Ian O'conner hates Bill Belichick. His articles written about Belichick last year were brutal, inaccurate, and self-important. If you can't see that he is trying to undermine Belichick then you are unable to read between the lines.

Re: Fox Sports: Parcells vs Belichick neck and neck for now.

If I remember correctly, Parcells hasn't won anything without BB.....BB has 3 rings and an undefeated regular season without him.

Great memory, I read it to about the 3rd paragraph and then scanned the rest.. when he started to mention spygate, and stats with and without Brady I moved on.. nothing to see here.

I agree. Just another opportunity for an inferior reporter to drag the Patriots through the past.

I like both Parcells and Belichick, however let me pose this popular question.

If I had one coach to choose to coach my team, the decision would not be a hard one to make...:)

You gotta give Parcells credit though. He took four different franchises over a 20 year period and built them from the bottom of the league to the playoffs, and relatively quickly. Nobody else has done that.

and BB hasn't won anything without Weis; so maybe Weis is the real genius?

Both BB and Parcells are great coaches; and both are smart enough to find smart people to work under them

Parcells is a good coach. But it's much harder to build a dynasty than a one-year wonder, especially in the free agent era.

Free agency allows teams, even horrible 1-15 teams, to fill in the holes on their roster. A good football man, which Parcells certainly is, will have little problem with identifying his teams's weaknesses and the appropriate free agent aquisitions. Most horrible teams, and especially the one's Parcells has taken over, have favorable salary cap situations which makes the turnarounds that much more likely.

There is a flip side to Parcells turning around so many teams. He is a mercenary. He either wears out his welcome or quits before finishing the job. The goal is to win Super Bowls and Parcells has only done that for one of the five franchises he has led.

Whereas, Belichick is more in the mold of a Shula or Noll. Coaches intent on building organizations that could be successful year in and year out. That's what coaching is all about. That's the type of coach that should be honored.

That is the point, no one wants to do this and in some cases has worn out his welcome.. often thought that Parcells has late onset ADD.. he gets things started and then moves on... no long term focus.

Of course BB took the pats to an undefeated regular season and super-bowl last year...if memory serves me, Parcells has never done that without BB. BB also has stayed with one team much longer than Parcells would dream of. There is no doubt that Parcells is a great coach and probably GM....he just has a short attention span.

The article made for an interesting read, but there are some holes in the argument that the two are "tied."

First of all, you can't say the fact that Parcells has never been fired gives him an edge, because as some other posters have already pointed out, he never stays at a job long enough to get fired. He reminds me of a guy I went to high school with who was obsessed with chasing girls - he would go after one, win her over, then pretty soon he'd dump her and start chasing another one. It was all about the chase, once he actually had her he lost interest. Parcells is the same way. He loves turning around dysfunctional franchises, but once they start accomplishing what he wanted them to accomplish he gets restless and decides he wants to retire. Granted, with the Giants he quit because of health reasons, but look at everywhere he's been since.

Second, you really can't hold it against Belichick for getting fired in Cleveland because by that point the whole franchise was in turmoil over the revelation of the move to Baltimore. Although he kept most of the other top football people (e.g. Ozzie Newsome) Modell decided that he needed a fresh start in Balty after the absolute s**t-storm that were his last two months in Cleveland. Further, we can all agree that BB had four losing seasons out of his five there (and like Parcells is fond of saying, "You are what you are"), but let's take a further look, shall we?

The salary cap and free agency began in 1993, Belichick's third year in Cleveland. So in his first two years, Belichick didn't have that much to work with, since Modell was deeply, deeply in debt on everything associated with the Browns and thus couldn't sign away big-name players. BB worked with what he had, which wasn't much. Then when free agency started, Modell took a big gamble by using the little credit he did have to sign Andre Rison.

By 1994 BB had turned things around some and got the team into the playoffs (where, as mentioned, he drubbed Big Bill's Pats in their only head-to-head playoff meeting.) The 1995 season started out with some promise, but the team tanked once the Baltimore thing leaked out.

Plus while all this was going on, Belichick was taking a beating from the media, who hated Modell and focused their rage on his head coach. It didn't help things when Belichick announced he was cutting the aging Bernie Kosar, either. The media raked him over the coals in Cleveland, which is why he's so tight-lipped to this day.

Then there's the issue of revamping bad teams. Admittedly Parcells is the master of doing more with less (the 9-7 '97 Jets were largely the same team that had gone 1-15 the year before) but when Belichick took over the Patriots, they weren't exactly Super Bowl caliber, either. The team was in rough shape due to the infamous personnel decisions of Bobby Grier and many of the team's better players had been signed away to... Parcells' Jets.

Both men are going to the Hall of Fame, but IMHO when you look at both their careers critically Belichick is by far the superior of the two.

Parcells is the equivalent of someone taking a credit card and buying all sorts of shiny things and says, look how much you have with me in charge, then leaves before the first bill arrives.

BB actually sticks a round to pay the bill and has kept this franchise on or near the top for years.

Agree. He could have thought up a better name for our coach than "Little Bill". About the fifth time he called coach that, I stopped reading. Not a bad article other than that; thanks to the OP for posting it.

Just because he doesn't want to stick around forever doesn't diminish him in my opinion. He was always replaced by a below average coach too.

And if his offensive gameplan was better maybe they win the Super Bowl and become the best team in NFL history. Instead they're number 43. So maybe Weiss was the genius?

Well as I recall during the four years they worked together in NE/NYJ that was how a lot of the fans referred to them, as "Big Bill" and "Little Bill", so it might not be a slam on Belichick. If anything it's a slam on Parcells for being such a fat bastid. ;)
