There are about 5 threads where people are talking about a first round OLB.....

To become a dominant defense again, the Patriots need pass

rushers and good coverage cornerbacks. It remins to be seen if

Crable, Redd, Woods, Wheatley, or Wilhite fill any of these needs.

I was surprised they did not activate Redd for the Jet's game.

Who's ***** you going to pull them out of? People started salivating about Crable in pre-season, how much pass rushing did he do before going on IR because he wasn't ready to play in the other phases of the defense? Vernon Gholston was considered a stud pass rusher, the Jester's are getting their money's worth with his pass rush aren't they? The bottom line, it is extremely unlikely there is a stud college DE in this draft who is going to come in and take significant reps at OLB in the Pats 3-4. If they want an instant pass rush then they'll need to shop in Free Agency, the same way they did with Colvin and Adalius.

Amen my brother!

That's why I get physically sick when I reflect on BB's inability to jump up and snatch Groves in last years draft.

Let's see the Jets had the ball on a 3rd and 15 and guess what, they converted with ease.
If BB is going to continue to play a soft zone defense, then a stud demon OLB coming off the edge is desperately needed.

There may be some hope yet.

Both Mayo and Guyton seem to be seeing more blitz calls as the games progress, Guyton in particular as a nickelbacker is getting noticed. I suspect they may have been held back a bit in the beginning to allow them to focus on one area of growth until they reached a sustainable level and could start working on another aspect. We're stuck with what the Pats have on the roster now, but by the end of the season there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. This is the head coach who will sacrifice early season games to build a competitive team for the playoffs.

In 2001 weren't we 5 and 5 after ten games before Brady took us on a wild run? I'm hoping we are building for another wild run.

Hey Ochmed, have you caught any PSU games this year? I haven't watched
as much football as usual this year. Got season tix from a friend who was going
to dump them. I told him I'd buy them this year. I think PSU has a couple of guys
who might fit our defense. Neither is ready to come out yet. But, A.Maybin is a
soph. 6"4" 240lb stud. 4% body fat. Kid has a great motor. He's a redshirt soph.
So, I'm pretty sure he'll be back. Mo Evans was the more hyped player. But, he
got in a little trouble after the first game(police found weed in his apt. after
investigating a loud noise complaint). Exiled to the doghouse. Just getting out
a couple of weeks ago. He is a 3ry year junior(no redshirt) and has to come back
to improve his game and off-field reputation.

Isn't Maybin leading the country in sacks? He looks great, but he's been getting a lot of one on one from opponents. Almost like they aren't taking him serious.

D Williams from PSU is the MAN! He is versatile and he makes PLAYS!!!! Hands, Speed and he blocks a little bit. (Route running needs lots of work.) That is the guy I would like to see BB draft from PSU. However, I am guessing that Williams is going to run in the 4.3 range because he is out running everybody in the cold weather, and that could move him up the dradft boards and beyond our ability to get to him.

I know what we need on defense, for Brady to get back. This defense is not designed to play and win games on it's own. In case no one notices, we've had a pretty darn good quarterback who helped keep us out of these messes.

The defense made good plays all last year not so much as the players lost: Gay, etc.. but because we were nearly always ahead and they weren't on the field so damn much and had energy to spare.

Whatever we draft in the first round, it is going to be one of a few things I can almost guarantee you.

1) a stud lineman. Protect Brady at all costs, run the ball down the opposing team's throat. Put up points, allow your older, veteran defense to make some sacks, hits, etc.. rather than win more of the game on their own.

2) CB. Anyone can say what they like but with Asante leaving and Gay gone. There is a desperate need for a standout corner. Enough with the veterans coming in playing musical chairs. Get a franchise CB who will be in the same system for years and thrive.

3) OLB pass rusher. Richard Seymour, Jarvis Green, Vince Wilfork, Ty Warren. You got what you need up front. Put someone on the other side of Vrable who is just as nasty as he is. I would want to see a mean SOB on the right side.

Quote it, save it. It will be one of those three positions.

Yeah, agree about D.Williams. He seems like a great kid. Struck up a friendship
with Joepa and helped him turn our moribound program around. PSU doesn't run the
most sophisticated passing attack. DWill needs a lot of work on his route running.
But, the kid is a competitor and won't come with any baggage. I'll be at the game
Saturday. Going to be a little chilly. But, a Rose Bowl berth is on the line. It's Senior
Day. I don't think Lions will be denied. I just think Pats will go defense in early
rounds unless OL. PSU has a LT to keep an eye on. He's a big kid. Pretty athletic.
Needs some time in the weight room. G.Cadogen 6'4" 315lb. Actually, ran intermediate
hurdles in high school. Maybe 3-4 round.

The defense couldn't get off the field against the Colts in the playoffs in 2006 and then against the Giants in the superbowl. Tom Brady does not play defense. He can play his best but if the other team gets the ball last with 3 minutes left to play would I bet on this defense to HOLD and keep the other team scoreless? Hell no, not without an ability to either RUSH the passer or shut down the pass. No stud rusher + no stud CB = Losses in the playoffs.

Your 3 priorities look about right. Some of these will be gotten via free agency but the draft is the cheapest/best solution IF you hit on your picks.
I would also add Strong Safety to the mix. We apparently don't have any safeties that can cover tight ends. The tightends have killed us recently, vs Colts, Giants, and most recently the Jets.
