NFL overtime needs to be changed

The overtime in the NFL is absolutely ridiculous. 70 percent of teams who win the toss win the game. To play an entire game to lose it based on a coin flip is absolutely insane. The NFL has the absolute worst overtime process of any sport its completely bush league. In such an important game we lose because we had heads.

I think the NFL has to import the college football OT version.
Games being decided on a coin flip is just mental.

The college version isn't perfect, but it is light years ahead of the NFL.

My ideal system would be similar to NCAA but both teams start at their own 30 or 35. Starting OT already in FG range makes no sense to me.

Agreed, its absurd. It's the only sport where in O.T the opposite team doesn't have the opportunity to match. Stupid.

This debate has been going on for years. For the longest time the OT records were 50/50 on winning/losing the coin toss, but then a key rule change happened: The kickoffs were moved back to the 30yd line, allowing for better returns and shorter fields for the team that won the coin toss. At that point the percentage started to skew in favor of the toss-winning team.

Last night Gost kicked the OT kickoff for a touchback. No long return. No short field for the Jets. At that point the OT was more like the old days of 50/50.

The Pats lost last night because they rushed 3 and dropped 8 on a 3rd-and-15, yet still could not keep Dustin Keller from converting a wide-open 1st down. Horrible play by the Pats and worthy of costing them the game. The rules did not cost them the game; Their play did.

The Pats D could not stop a 38 year old gassed out QB in the 5TH QUARTER from leading the team downfield for the score including allowing several 3rd down conversions - The Patriots deserved to lose the game since they could not stop Favre..case closed

And we don't get the opportunity to send our Offense on the field to even attempt to match. It's simple. The NFL O.T rules suck.

Hockey's overtime is sudden death.

Soccer is sudden death until they go to goal kicks (the worst way to resolve a tie)

As is many other sports such a water polo, field hockey, etc.

Nothing more credible than calling for a rule change after your team loses. Must be a big Bill Polian fan.

They are playing both offense and defense in soccer and hockey O.T as opposed to the NFL, where the D has to stop them in order to get the ball. I could of rephrased that better.

Crap like this in complaining about NFL rules only comes to the forefront when it involves the Patriots - Just stop the whining and move on

It took the NFL years after years to adopt the 2 pt. conversion decades ago and there will likely be no more collegiate type game rules for a very long time so don't expect any soon

The current rule does not guarantee both teams a chance to have a shot to win the game in overtime. Even if it was only 10% of the time that the team that wins the coin flip scores on the opening drive , it still gives the other team an unfair disadvantage in that they never get a posession to try to score.

I have felt this way for a while. I don't think it is an excuse why the Pats lost, but a harsh reality of the NFL.

They adopted the 2 pt conversion at the time of the merger...It came from the AFL

I've also felt this way for a while, and I'll wait until later to complain about it again. I'd hazard a guess that the 52% figure is much higher if you were to only count the modern, offense-oriented era.

If you can't beat the other team in regulation, then you've put the game in the hand of chance.

The NCAA style is so amateur and backyard football esque. I believe the proper overtime system is simply letting each team have at least one possession.
