How do we keep the jets from getting Cassel next year?

I don't know about that he'll go where the money is, and where he thinks he can win! What NFC team needs a QB that can win, the Lions? Maybe the Vikings, or Bears.

honestly? the Panthers...

they are a good team, young, they hvae all the parts...but delhomme is getting older, and he sucks...

if the panthers were to get matt, they could be a top contender in teh NFC (more so then even now)

Just talking in these terms is mind-blowing. Cassel is a legit starter unless he is excelling only in the system and not on his own.

I could see the Jets making a run at him. We may have to pull a Theo Epstein and do something to drive up the price and give the Jets the biggest cap hit possible.

Teams Cassel could be playing for next year:

SF, SEA, DET, MIN, TB, PHI(i think the Mcnabb era FINALLY is over)

NYJ and MIA are not out of the question

I think Thigpen's play in KC has eliminated the Chiefs from Cassel's list

I'll take a wild guess and say that Cassel is either a Niner or a Buc next year. I think the Lions are too dumb to take him. The Eagles will be very interested, although I'm not sure Cassel will want to deal with the Philly media

If Cassel is getting that kind of buzz come February he will net us picks. I don't know why people struggle so with the concept. He's either that good or who cares who gets him. I really think those who struggle with the concept are conflicted and just fear anyone going to "the enemy" while they still struggle to admit Cassel isn't really the prospective Walmart employee they all pronounced him in August after all...

tag him, trade him. we dont owe him anything but signing bonus, which i wouldnt think there would be any in this situation.

I agree. He'll be franchised. Would you want a rookie or Cassel. He has Pro experience and very little wear and tear. OTOH, you can pay 60m for a rookie.


He'll need to continue this level of play. I see no reason he'll fall back. When you think about it, after the Grier Era, the front office is spectacular. A 7th round pick and some trust/patience.

Can the Pats afford to have over $29 million in cap space tied up in two QBs during the first several weeks of free agency???That is THE question.

After this game, this is the first time I legitimately am thinking the Pats may franchise Cassel and trade him. This is the type of game that makes GMs do stupid things to get a young QB (for example Matt Schaub after one game with the Pats or Rob Johnson after a couple of good games). Cassel answered a lot of questions tonight. Can he play from behind and get his team back into the game? Can he be more than a game manager and air it out? Can he lead the team on a crucial drive at the end of the game? The answers based on last night are yes, yes, and yes.

Cassel probably won't have another game like this again this season, but if he has another 300 plus yard game or two or more there will be teams lining up to sign him. I think the Pats could get a first for him in that case.

If the Pats just let Cassel go, I think Cassel goes to San Fran. He is a California boy and a 49er fan.

This is a probable scenario. OK PATs may not get a draft pick this year but
if a trade is worked out after the 2009 draft, PATs may get draft picks in 2010. Also another benefit for the PATs is by having trading rights they
have a say in which team they trade with.

Also one disadvantage for Cassel in holding out until AFTER the 2009 draft
is some teams may solve their QB issue by drafting a QB. This would
limit where he might end up.

I think best thing for PATs and Cassel is to come to some mutual beneficial
agreement before threats and statements are made public.

Cassel does have a say in the matter. If he is traded without his agreeing to the trade, he can sign the franchise tag immediately and gain immediate leverage in all contract talks with his new team.

No team is going to trade for a player without talking to Cassel. After hearing Cassel's speech the other 31 teams can talk to Cassel, find out his contract demands, and if his contract demands are agreeable, wait until the Pats rescind the tag to sign Cassel without giving up a draft pick.
