Jerod Mayo is a monster

Seriously, if that wasn't a 3 hour application for defensive rookie of the year, I don't know what is.

By the end of the game I didn't have to wonder who made that great tackle if I couldn't see their jersey.

Just to chime in, yes; Mayo is an absolute monster. Also, Guyton and Woods had very good games.

With Mayo on the team I think our LB corp will be solid for a long time. And to think, some people didn't like that draft pick...

I'm one of those people. I had never even heard of the kid. He is a beast. He was all over the field. When it comes to top ten picks, the Patriots know what they are doing. Mayo is worth every dime we paid him and the pick that we spent on him. Guyton and Woods have also been a pleasant surprise.

When it happens that many times, it's a trend. They are system players.

I don't buy it. Branch was never really that great until the Superbowl and has been injured ever since. Corey Dillon was at the tail end of his career. Stallworth is no worse for Cleveland than he was for us last year. You pick players that fit your system, but you can't make a good system without good players.

Im gonna go out on a limb... but I think he might just be the best player on our defense right now. Only ones who could challenge him on that would be Seymour/Wilfork... but they are experienced veterans playing in their primes.
And now knowing our luck Mayo gets put on IR next week.

This is why people who rag on the defense drive me nuts. We have TONS of talent and speed on defense, but we have been dealing with a ton of injuries and are naturally transitioning from a bend don't break style that was meant to go along with the ridiculous offense of last year, to an aggressive pass rush type defense. It's not supposed to be perfect, but the defense has been getting better and better lately, with Mayo playing the best game yet tonight, along with other pleasant surprises in Guyton and Woods and to a lesser extent Wilhite and Merriweather.

I am also enjoying Wilhite (although I don't recall seeing him on the field too much today) and am a big Meriweather fan.

I am ragging on the playcalling in the D. Not the actual players. Just wanted to make that clear.

A new defensive coordinator would help.

Don't get me started on the coordinators. I think that they both are lacking, IMHO. I would take RAC back in a heart beat if he'll have us.

Well I'm not going to disagree with you there, I just think they are trying to figure out what works with the constant injuries to key players and a different offense, it's not supposed to be perfect. People (not you) tend to talk broadly about "the defense" as a whole unit.

And Wilhite came in and replaced Hobbs very nicely for part of the game.

Is anybody else pleasantly surprised by the physical presence he brings to the table? I thought his spine was going to be snapped in twine when he met Jones at the goal line and drove him back . . .

When Belichick harped on his intelligence, I assumed that meant he was destined to be in position more often than not; I did not expect for him to deliver bone-crushing hits every 3 minutes.

When they lined up Jones on that play I said out loud "now who's going to come up to meet him as he jumps?" and not only did I immediately know who the obvious guess was, but he NAILED the tackle.

He hits like I expected Merriweather would eventually going to start hitting when I heard his nick name.

Tell me why the Patriots stopped blitzing toward the end of the game. Favre showed he wanted nothing to do with a pass rush yet the Patriots laid off of him. That was the difference in my opinion.

We have the future in our 2 ILB's. Guyton and Mayo will be getting it done for us for years to come.

Guyton is the exact type of player who comes out of nowhere and exactly defines the difference between the Pats and other teams. People who knock the Pats recent drafts always do it without comparing them to other teams drafts, so they think every pick is supposed to be perfect. When Chad Jackson got cut, you'd think some people here forgot about all of the talent the Pats have built their dynasty around through savvy drafting and FA acquisitions. Pretty much every single player on the defense right now shows a lot of talent and potential, but it's going to take time to adjust to the volatility of injuries and new gameplanning.

Good point wildo! think about all the injuries! but in a way, they have been a blessing for the coaching staff because I believe a couple of gems are emerging who otherwise may have never had the chance.

This "could" be a year like 2001 where we really peak in the second half. But a win next week is an absolute must if that is going to happen. If we lose, I don't think we'll go far.

If Meriweather wanted to win like Mayo wanted to win, maybe he makes that stop on 3rd and 15 and the Pats get the ball back.

The LB (Guyton, I think), blew the coverage, not the SS. He bit a little on the under. Lack of experience. A slower Bruschi would make that play with ease. Still, you need to play to learn. As for desire, you can confuse it with inexperience. Confident players make faster, better decisions.

I'm getting a #51 Jersey as well.

Actually I believe that was Woods.

I already got a Mayo Jersey.... for 20$!!!!!!

Where from I want one....

Per rotoworld... Patriots rookie LB Jerod Mayo recorded a game-high 20 tackles, including 16 solo tackles and two tackles for a loss in Week 11 against the Jets.
He also deflected a pass and was an omnipresent menace throughout the game. Mayo's numbers could have been even more remarkable had he not made a trip to the locker room in the first half. The probable Defensive Rookie of the Year is now the NFL leader in tackles.

Meriweather missed tackles all night long tried too much for the big hit rather than just wrap up and take the guy down. Mayo Done both and made a s**t load of tackles.
