Just wanted to take my serving of crow. I've been bashing Cassel since he has been thrust into the starting role as QB. I, like others, predicted he would not make the roster when the final cut was made. He showed nothing in the preseason, and in my mind was an experiment gone bad. I then went on to bash Bill for insuring Tom Brady with a guy who hasn't played since high school.

I was wrong.

I'm with you brotha. We might be watching the development of Brady's replacement. Who knows what kind of condition Brady will be in when he comes back? It won't be the first time that the Patriots replace the starting QB with a backup. I have accepted this. Brady wasn't going to play forever. Maybe it's time to move on. Let the Matt Cassel era begin.

Count me in too.

I bashed Cassel, thought O'Connell would be starting at this point and I have to admit.....

I was wr.....wr.......wr......wro.....wro........wrong

His play in Indy is what totally sold me. He was really solid in a hostile envirnoment against a really good football team. That's what I had to see first instead of how he played against the likes of the Rams, Chiefs and Niners, and he proved me wrong.

Nice to see some guys man enough to eat the crow. I admit that while I thought Cassel was the best choice for the team it was only after BB chose him as the back up this year. I dogged him like many did in TC but I never wanted him cut just wanted more Training camp reps for O'Connell. Wow are we lucky that Cassel got tons of TC reps.

Too bad we can't get lucky with guys just not getting injured.

Whoa whoa whoa... we're not replacing Drew Bledsoe here. It's Tom Brady, and he's going to be given every opportunity to come back to form before we move on from him. The only way Matt Cassel is going to be around to be his replacement is if we sign him as a backup after this year. I think he's playing himself into a starting role somewhere else.

I agree though, I was very concerned when this all started, but those concerns have been allayed. It's not just how he's playing, it's the steady improvement to the "feel" of his game that we can see every week.

I think Cassel has matured into a quarterback you can trust won't often make the play that loses the game but I am still not certain this team has playoff potential, especially with 4 injured starters from 2007 now on IR

If we beat the Jets and Miami and Pittsburgh its a whole new increased fan base Cassel will have that he doesn't already have from where he was in preseason - He is definately improved and I was wrong in expecting horrible things from him - At least thus far.

I am sure that Brady has been around to help or talk to Matt along the way

Look, let's be honest here.

Matt will be getting a phone call from the Detroit Lions on the first day of FA to come in and lead the Lions while they wait on their #1 overall pick Matt Stafford to develop. He has starter money waiting for him and he's not going to sign here to hold a clipboard, we know that. So let's enjoy Matt while we can, because he's as good as gone in February. Take us as far as you can Matt.

Exactly !
This is too much.
So anyway do you think we can get a couple 2nd round picks for this Brady guy ?
Heck we will throw in Maroney.

Jeezus...you are so easily swayed...it's your achilles heel sistah...

I admire the MC bashers having the guts to admit that their unnecessary criticism was wrong, but I am startled to see your closing comment.

Are you being sarcastic or over-reacting like how the MC bashers did in the first half of the season?

I'm just thinking of the future. Brady is NOT going to play forever, and he's just suffered a MAJOR injury. Don't you think it's wise to have insurance? What if he's not the same when he comes back? I think that it would be a mistake to let Cassel go.

Better late than never, as I said back in Sept., bandwagon welcomes all temporarily lost brothers and sisters.

Nice to have you and those around you that are coming back, doesn't mean you have to be a "homer" or a "hater" either, whether you stayed on, got off or are now coming back on. Most of us are all PAtriot fanatics around here which is why we come here.

Let's just hope this fun wild ride of 2008 continues to amaze all....just heard on Fespn they said and to think, we all had the Patriots dead and buried, yet HERE THEY ARE....hahaha, screw you Fespn.

No. I'm serious. I am concerned that Brady won't be the same after that injury. There have been many Qbs that haven't been the same after recovering from an injury like that. Yes, some have, but many haven't. I'm thinking of the future.

After that horrendous preseason, I didn't think that Cassel was the man for the job. HE has convinced me that I was dead wrong. He continues to impress me every week. It makes me wonder why he never started in College. He got his chance, and he has STEPPED UP. He gets big time props from me.

Pass the bird.

Cassel was eratic for a couple of games but has shown clear and dramatic improvement, especially in the last few games. Still needs to put more points on the board, but he is clearly capable and headed in the right direction. Comparisons to TB are misguided and unfair, but Cassel has earned his next contract and will be starting for another NFL team next fall.

I am notexpecting Brady to start opening day next season since he may miss part of Camp and preseason.

If everything goes well with the knee I expect Cassel to still be here as the starting QB next season on a 1 year deal and Brady back out on the field by November - O'Connell becomes #2 QB in 2010

But if Cassel can get a 3 year deal with a decent signing bonus to go be a starter for the whole year somewhere else, you don't think he'll jump at that? How many chances do you think he'll get to cash in?

This is VERY odd for me to say but... I'm with BradyToMoss  Let's enjoy Matt while we have him and see what happens. I am almost certain we will not be seeing him on the Pats next year.

But why would Cassel sign a one year deal with us when he could conceivably have a chance to strike a long-term deal while the iron was hot?
(Sicilian beat me to it. ;))

Your concerns are quite valid and I also hope that MC is with us.

But I realized long ago that I am missing the current joy of admiring and watching the team/players develop even if I spend a minute thinking on what the future bodes.

I was startled to see many experienced posters thrash MC and so started a poll to see how many of the fans viewed MC as a mistake. Was glad that 80% were with me in wanting to wait until at least 7/8 games before deciding on him.

Just as I thought then that MC's criticism went overboard at that point in time, I think that heralding him as the future king is going overboard at this point in time. :)

Exactly! The iron will very very hot if MC takes us deep into the playoffs and... gulp, to SB! :D
