ESPN needs to layoff of Mayo and talk about the $100 million man that is overrated.

Historically based on stats, Big Ben is still on track to be a HOF.

that pick before half ultimately hurt them. it's kind of funny that we have a thread in here about BB being afraid because he is conservative before half time.

?????????

HOF is hugely dictated by Super Bowl rings(which he has 1) unless you break records like Marino.

Let's not get carried away. He had a bad game, he's not Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but he's still a top 5 QB IMO and has a ring where his arm was a huge part of their run through the AFC playoffs.

He's obviously got his problems but the Steelers just have nothing on the Offensive Line. Sometimes Ben does too much to overcome that but it's hard to expect any QB to do too well when they're getting shellacked every passing play.

Look at all time NFL QB stats. By most measures, Big Ben is a top 20 of all time QB so far in his career trajectory. But he did have a horrible game today.

Tom Brady does have bad games too, about once or twice every year.

Ben is a player who let his ego get in the way of his sound development. He didn't want to be a game manager, he wanted to be The Franchise. Last week he got reemed by his 2nd year HC for making stupid mistakes and bad decisions repeatedly. He admitted he doesn't work hard enough on game prep and vowed to change. He wants to play sandlot ball, and his ego is part of the reason Cowher decided to take his sabatical and move on. Tomlin and Arens played right into Ben's ego last season and they are now paying the price. And so is Ben. And so are Steeler fans. It's not a lack of protection with Ben so much as recklessness and stubborness. And 5 years in it will be tough to change his subconscious mindset. Like Favre they can behave in small segments, not long term - it's not fun enough.

chargers D will make him look like joe montana next weekend

He's the reason the steelers lost today.

i am no Roethlisberger fan but i give alot more blame to the Coach for not running out the clock with about a 1 min 40 sec to go in the half and the Colts with no time outs.

If the Steelers had played smart football and run the clock out with the run rather then attempting to go for the kill from their own eight yd line they most likely would have won this game.

Poor coaching without a doubt.

Although I do think that Rthlsbrgr is clearly over rated (look at his 22 QB rating in his SB 'win' that was really due to the zebras) he really needs better OL protection. Indy 2008 unfortunately fields a pretty fast D.

He's a good solid QB, but I think he's vastly overrated. People complained about Cassel holding the ball too long, Roethlesberger seems like he holds onto it forever.

sounds like Drew Bledsoe with a SB ring.

Ben has a lot of tools, but he is clearly a bit of a knucklehead. Even discounting the boneheaded INT's today, you can see that, on the last play of the game, Ben wanted to spike the ball to kill the clock with about 5 seconds left. The only problem was that it was 4th down. Hines Ward managed to get his attention and alert him to that fact...

He's absolutely a top tier quarterback in this league, but I'm not entirely sure if that speaks more to his abilities, or to the status of quarterbacking in the league today...

He is a very good QB.

He had to beat us with his arm overall since we STOPPED their running game.

I always thought he was over-hyped and eventually over paid from the start. Remember his rookie year? Thats all you saw on tv Sundays were "BIG BEN" commercials and BIG BEN this and BIG BEN that,it was sickning. All he did was hand the ball off. The Steelers play football like it was played in the '70's. They threw 18-20 times a game and handed the ball off. Rothless.... can't carry that team by himself imo. hes not good enough.

Nicely said...

His HC and OC managed him behind a smashmouth running component to a 15-1 rookie season debut. They then managed that same team into a superbowl run from the 6 seed in which they started to give Ben more responsibility in equally managed segments. That they won with him having the worst game of his young career is testament to the foundation Cowher and Co. built for him.

But then he began to get vocal about his vision of his role and much more difficult to manage. Cowher saw that writing on the wall in 2006, and the organization was so desperate for a franchise QB they chose Ben (even post brainslam) over Whisenhut as Cowher's successor. They then paired Ben with a rookie HC and an OC who would tailor the offense to Ben's desire to throw more downfield...and now what you get is a situation where the OL gets blamed first by those who cannot see that the real culprit is the QB making bad decisions, bad throws, hanging on to the ball too long intent on forcing outcomes, etc.

It's a lot like what happened in GB post ring and post Holmgren. Managing gunslingers becomes a draining FT job in and of itself, as Eric is finding out this season. They bristle at being stifled and at the first signs of random success they start to regress to their norm. And because sometimes they pull wins out of their ass by ignoring you when your job is on the line it becomes a real conundrum for HC's to legitimately control the product on the field...

To some extent it's worse in Pittsburgh because Ben has never been as talented or as remotely as durable as Favre...and unlike Favre he cares what is being said about him and that will begin to effect his on field mentality as he doubts himself in the process. Favre wasn't put in that position until the tail end of his career in GB, and even then as we saw he absolved himself as he always will. It's happening too early in Ben's career for absolution.

I don't think Ben'e been the same since the accident.
