MOSS FINED FOR RITICIZING REFS
Posted by Mike Florio on November 9, 2008, 12:20 p.m.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Patriots receiver Randy Moss has been slapped with a $20,000 fine for recent criticisms of the officials.

“A lot of guys are really down because we let a game like this slip,” Moss said after Sunday night’s loss to the Colts. “But when things happen, you have to watch what you say. Guys don’t want to get fined. But there was some real iffy calls out there.

“Some of the things you wish wouldn’t happen. But good calls and bad calls are part of the game. You’ve got to live with that one, the good and the bad.”

Though Moss surely thought he didn’t cross the line, this fine proves that the league is serious about requiring players, coaches, and other team officials to use internal channels to voice concerns about the officiating — and to say nothing at all about calls that they believe to be bad or botched or iffy or any other negative adjective.

20,000 bucks!?! Are you freaking kidding me? These fines are getting outrageous.

I wonder how Moss is going to pay it?:D

Hope he appeals it. That's bull****.

Is the NFL another damn country? I could have sworn that it was part of the UNITED STATES where we have that thing called FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
This is getting ridiculous.

Iffy calls gets a fine? what a joke.

I really hope that the NFLPA tells Goodell to go F**K himself with all these fines come the next CBA. Seriously, that is just ridiculous.

This fine on Moss is appropriate.

It's right in line with the Spygate fine against the Pats.

In terms of the ratio of the amount of the fine to the seriousness of the offense, it's appropriate.

If you're going to get a #1 stripped away for doing what every other team does, then it makes sense that you'd get fined $20k for pointing out that there are sometimes bad calls in games, and as a player, you have to live with them. $20k for essentially saying nothing. A #1 for essentially doing nothing.

Goodell.

Goodell is making a mockery of the NoFunL

Dude if your quoting what moss said about the refs than his fine is BS. He didn't say anything negative he was just answering a damn queston

espnews has this up as a roll ticker every 2 secs

This can't be true. Moss is raped almost every play, and he never complains. The refs seem to be in a trance when he goes up to catch a pass that they ignore the rules themselves.

I think Randy knew he would be fined when he made those comments. And he decided to take the hit by speaking aloud what some of his teammates may have been thinking. Taking one for the team. JMHO

Moss fined 20K for comments on officiating

20K for that? Anyone else feel thats a bit much? Moss did not really say anything specific or harsh. I guess you need to be a GM and on the competition commitee to complain about the officiating and not get fined.

NFL fines Pats' Moss for comments made on officiating after Colts loss
ESPN.com news services

The NFL fined New England Patriots receiver Randy Moss $20,000 for comments made on officiating after last Sunday's loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

"A lot of guys are really down because we let a game like this slip," Moss said, according to the Boston Herald. "But when things happen, you have to watch what you say. Guys don't want to get fined. But there was some real iffy calls out there.

"Some of the things you wish wouldn't happen. But good calls and bad calls are part of the game. You've got to live with that one, the good and the bad."

The league has been cracking down on public criticism of officials.

"Public criticism of officials is prohibited because it serves the club and the league no good. We do it privately, so we can make sure we're responding to an allegation that is presented in a calm moment, not in the heat of battle where you have just lost a game," NFL executive V.P. of football operations Ray Anderson recently said.

Sorry dude, there is a seperate thread on this that had several responses. Looks like it disappeared to the subsequent pages following yesterday's game and AT's IR news.

EDIT - earlier thread in page one itself (in the middle) and not page two.

Mods - merge?

This is getting ridiculous.

Let's do an experiment: YOU go on TV and criticize YOUR employer. Then come back and report back how cost you.

The first amendment says the government can't punish you for your speech. But the government didn't fine Moss, his employer did. You do the same thing (unless you are employed by the state or federal government) and odds are you will be fired for cause.

Nor did the government fire the cheerleader that has been recently discussed ad nauseam her employer did.

Likewise, when country radio stations stopped playing the Dixie Chicks to punish them for their anti-war stance, it was 1st amendment issue.

Freedom of speech is only a concept when it applies to the government trying to shut you up.

The NFL is not the employer of the players, and the officials are sure as heck not their employers. Furthermore, freedom of speech is not just about the government. The first amendment only applies to the government, but the two things aren't identical.

GODell needs to spend less time slapping people for expressing concerns and more time actually addressing those concerns.
