Is Mayo and Guyton the next great LB duo in the NFL?

Last time I remember the Canton quote from the Pats was with Curtis Martin...That worked out pretty good

At this point Guyton doesn't even play on running downs. But, yes, pioli did very well at ILB.

He played some running downs v. the Colts. Granted, its a technicality perhaps - because of the no huddle making it difficulty to switch personnel, Guyton was def in there in the base 3-4 at times. I think Reiss noted it in either his mailbag or his defensive participation #s. If it weren't for the Colts no huddle, maybe he would not have been in on those snaps.

If they can stay healthy and injury free I truly beleive taht they are a force to be reckoned with.

I like both rookies and I think they've been impressive, but it's too early to be thinking elite.

Remember, Maroney when he burst onto the scene looked like he could be Curtis Martin. And after Eugene Wilson's rookie year, we all thought that we had a future Pro Bowler in our hands. Soooo, too early. Although they are playing well.

Jerod Mayo: $3 million/year
Gary Guyton: rookie minimum contract
Pwning JEST fans: Priceless

To everybody calling the Jets' Gholston a bust, that is unfair. Going at his current pace, he will end the season with 8 solo tackles, 0 sacks, and 0 caused fumbles. That's like a half a solo tackle a game my friends. :)

Seriously, yes, it's exciting to see these two young LBs play well. We'll just have to see how the progress as time moves on.

This years draft/free agent signings is looking very good for the Pats. As to getting a bit too excited too early....yup....and happy to do it. After losing Brady and some previous not-so-good drafts, I am happy to take the good from this year and run with it!

We still need a big run stuffing high contact guy to replace Bru. rudd came out of college as a run stuff more than a coverage guy.

we need 1 more LB to play run heavy offence and running downs in base 3-4

I dunno - I think we may have found that guy in Guyton. 6'3, 242. Let's say he can get that up to 250. Ted Johnson was 6'4, 253 and Bruschi is 6'1, 247. Let's have Guyton hit the weights, and he may be our SILB of the future. He certainly has looked strong taking on guards, all the way back to preseason.

I disagree of late i am thinking the weight of a player has nothing to do with the way they play. bru is not a typical inside guy but he plays it as its the manner he plays and how he is able to generate presure to holdoff gaurds. guyton is good in coverage but speed packages but he does not play low enough to generate this. A reason he went undrafted , see urlachar he played safety too in college . it has nothing to do with how big your its how your build and how you play. again its my 2 cents as we too much stock on the physical aspect than how one plays.

The build doesn't hurt though - and hopefully what you are talking about is a teachable thing. Like I said, I'm throwing the undrafted label out the window, and just going based on what I've seen - and that's Guyton looking good both in pass coverage, applying pressure in pass rushing and taking on guards in the run. He can learn and get better - maybe not overnite, but he's shown me enough that I'm not considering ILB a real need going into the draft in April.

Elite, it is crazy to think that about any team's unit until they actually become elite. What I will say is that the last time I felt this good about the potential of a defensive youth movement was in 03-04. There is reason for optimism that this defense can regain some of its former dominance, and with Brady returning that means more Super Bowl runs.

I think the scarier aspect of this is the fact that Belioli have finally gotten good production from rookie LBs, creating room for developing others instead of having to rely on free-agency for savvy vets. For the first time in... ever, we're not headed for an offseason where the linebacker corps is in need of an upgrade/infusion of youth.

Well I'd disagree partially. I think ILB is pretty much set. But the Pats still lack a pass rusher that can get to the QB and consistently pressure him. The pass rush against the Colts was nearly nonexistent. I didn't even see dirt on Peyton's uniform.

Guyton kind of reminds me of Brian Cox a little.
