Webster signed; Crable to IR

The Patriots announced the signing of cornerback Jason Webster this morning, and placed rookie linebacker Shawn Crable on season-ending injured reserve.

Webster, who has played eight NFL seasons, was with the Patriots in training camp. He was cut before the season opener.

But I thought Crable was going to replace Vrabel soon  LOL, sorry, had to for all the Crable-over-Vrabel people out there.

Seriously though, that is a bummer, and I am a Crable fan too - always hate to see a rookie's first season get red-shirted, but it is what it is. Long term, I still think he's going to be a factor and good player at the OLB position.

Good pickup to get Webster back, adds to the depth there, which will be depleted over the next few weeks as Wheatley presumably misses some time.

Sucks that he is done. Wouldve been nice to see what he had.

I liked what I saw in Crable. Too bad he's not gonna be able to play this season.
Welcome back, Webster :)

You have to wonder why they took so long to get this done.

Think Webster is still around after the Bills game?

I think he will at least be around until Wheatley is healthy. But his veteran presance could be a boost too.

Crable to IR sucks. I can't remember the last time the Pats IR'd a rookie and he ever ended up amounting to much. Watson I suppose has been average. But IIRC, Richardson is just about the only second-day rookie to go to IR who even ended up suiting up for the NEP. Seems like more often than not, they fade away. Hopefully not the case with Crable.

Yah, you know those girly mon skinny legs did him in.

This was a move to clear a 53 roster spot in an area where we're strong (LB) so that we could beef up even temporarily an area of injury weakness. The Crab wasn't gonna see significant PT so why not better utilize the 53? He's gotten exposure to the team and its philosophy, now let him 'pump himself up' before 2009 camp.

So the man-love that so many here had for Crable goes unrequited.

Mr. Lua, err, Crable, get some meat on those bones or your job next year will be for a much lower salary.

Draft is luck of the draw .No matter where some one is drafted it is what you do with the chance. In a stacked rookie LB class guyton managed to make a impact where as others did not.

i have a feeling either rudd or crabel or even both will be cut next year.

I agree. He was never really going to contribute this year, so with some minor injury, they stashed him on IR to free up a spot. Hopefully he eats his wheaties, gains some mass, and comes on strong next year.

Wow. He literally did not step on the field after preseason. I wonder how in the world he hurt himself bad enough to land on IR.

He didn't. See posts #8 and #11. Typical BB move.

Not bad news, it suggests that Wheatley may be out for a while but not a season ender.

Don't give up on Crable this early. Vern Gholston hasn't made any

impact with the Jets and he was drafted #6. I expect either Crable

or Redd will be seeing playing time next year spelling Vrabel.

Pierre Woods has that job.

LINEBACKERS
We have two rookie linebackers as part of our corps of six linebackers who get all the reps. In the end, Crable couldn't beat out Woods. All six will be back in 2009. Others may make the team, but they would be underdogs to get major reps: Crable, Redd and Ruud. They could get reps as a special teamer, if they can beat out Izzo. I expecet that Alexander will be gone.

CORNERS
Welcome back Webster! He will take Wheatley's reps. I wouldn't be surprised to see Wheatly go on IR if he really has a broken wrist. I don't think he isn't good enough to keep in the hope that he can contribute in the playoffs.

I have a hunch Wheatley is in bad shape, too, but they won't totally show their hand. Are they watching to see if D. Hall clears waivers? It would be madness to take that injury clause on, but if he clears waivers, they might get him for cheap and he could be dumped at the first sign of trouble.

I can't imagine, the way things are shaping up, that we'll add any more LB's if another spot opens up, so I'd expect a Corner comes in if Wheatley hits IR.
