Take the damn chains of Matt Cassel!

I think its time our coaches let this guy throw a play thats not a screen or a 5 yards pass.Let him go play-action.I never liked Cassel to begin with but u can clearly see that he is stepping to his throws more and he looks more comfortable.I would love to see him go play-action against the buffalo bills.Mcdaniels needs to open that damn playbook and let Cassel have some fun throwing it.

How many times have you seen Moss put his hand up to say he's open and have Cassel not throw it to him ? Sure there's a few calls I've thought have been too conservative but Cassel is right in the middle of the league in passes attempted and from how it looks on TV has plenty of options to go downfield more but chooses not to. I don't think there's any chains around him, he is just chooses to throw short a lot. From what I've seen his short to intermediate throws are better than his deep ball anyway - although it would help if Gaffney would catch the occassional good deep ball that Cassel throws.

After the KC game, Mr. 7-11's comment was, he did damn good for someone you all thought should be cut. Moss's was more reserved and pretty much claimed he had absolutely no opinion as he never played or practiced with Matt only Tom. Which is BS cause spend much of the pre-season with Matt, b/c of Tom's injury. My speculation is that even before Tom went down, Wes and Matt were friends had confidence in each other and had a chemistry. OTOH, Moss and Matt didn't have that same chemistry from the start, but based on Moss's latest interview it is developing.

the problem with your argument is that the pats deliberately used a west coast style offense this game to keep peyton off the field. it worked. we dominated the time of possession with a number of long drives. if gaffney had come down with that ball or dave thomas weren't so stupid, then we would have won.

How many different threads are you going to start blasting McDaniels and the gameplan. The gameplan was as close to perfect as you are going to get. Not throwing deep to Moss was not the reason the Pats lost. In fact, if they did, it could have resulted in a bigger loss for the Patriots. The Colts gameplanned their defense to stop the big plays. If the Pats tried the big play more often and failed, they wouldn't have had those 15 play drives and put the ball in Manning's hands more often in that game.

I would also like to see them try to bootleg Cassel at least once. I think it would work, at least the first few times because no one would be expecting it. It would have been perfect in that play at the 6 yard line when they decided not to go for it on 4th down - a bootleg would have been a td IMO. This would be a good play for 2 reasons, 1) it would be a sure first down, 2) it would force the defense to respect the bootleg in the future, opening up holes to make it easier to get first downs on short yardage.

I'm curious why they haven't tried it - do they not trust Cassel to run it, do they not think it would work, or did they just not think of it.

I agree with the premise of this thread to some extent. I am just not sure that it isn't Cassel himself. There just seems to be some timidness in calling more aggressive plays but there also have been plenty of chances for agressive plays that have been passed up on for other reads.

This IMO was not so annoying thru the year because well obviously we have a decent record but also because it meant he wasn't taking big risk and thus having extra turnovers. But I found it real frustrating in the Colts game because their secondary was hurting.

I know people think the gameplan worked which it may have to some extent but that doesn't mean it was the right gameplan. With the Colts struggling the way they have and with Seyton's supposed injuries you should have tried to put more pressure on them not go to the west coast ball control stuff and limit his opportunities because limiting Seytons chances limited our chances as well and I think we should have taken more chances against their hurting Secondary.

As the season goes on you are probably going to see more downfield passing. Compare the last couple games to Cassel's first couple starts and there IS a difference on the amount of attempts past the 10 yard mark. Expect that trend to continue, and be patient in the meantime. We're only halfway through the season you know.

And remember it also depends on our opponent. Passing downfield against the Colts is playing right into their strength. Plus, we were a shorthanded team going into that game. We needed to shorten the game and that's what we did. If we are healthy later in the season we will play alot less conservative. Also look at the way Manning was throwing, he was picking our defense apart. If their offense was on the field any longer they would have easily put up 30+ points on us and made us a one-dimensional offense in the 2nd half. Our gameplan was great on Sunday it was just ruined on stupid mistakes by Gaffney, Thomas, and poor in game management by BB. Having that many blunders in one game while your opponent doesn't commit a single one happens maybe once in a season, and hopefully this is our one for this year. And we still only lost by 3.
