Fining Wilfork for hitting Jay Cutler away from the play as he tried to get up off the ground is understandable - it protects a multi-million dollar investment from excessive harm, defined as hitting a player away from the action.
Fining BJeepers for hitting a guy one step out of bounds is stepping off the tightrope balancing act between protecting players from harm and mothering them into tutus and footy pajamas. It sends a message that playing to the whistle is no longer the standard for tackling the ball carrier (there is no way that hit occured after the whistle, at worst it was simultaneous to the whistle). BJeepers should have drawn a flag, that's the rule, but his play was not egregiously dangerous, did not occur away from the play, and was no worse than some of the late hits on QBs, most of which do not earn a fine. I'm just sure Roy Williams was fined for his first horse collar tackle.
If BJeepers gets fined for this, watch for Seymour & Co. to draw fines for late hits on the QB, helmet to helmet, or striking the helmet of the QB. Most of those "incidents" occur at game speed and are inadvertant, especially factoring in momentum.
This was a bogus fine, excessive to the situation. Goodall & the Competition Committe are off the tightrope and putting in a five lane highway.
