Rookie RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis has been fined $5,000 by the NFL for a late hit on Rams CB Fakhir Brown in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Rams.

It was a late hit, the fine is understandable.

Then why wasn't it called by the crew working that night?

My problem with these fines for non-calls is that it seems like it is serving to undercut the authority of the refs. Basically, the NFL is saying that their crew missed some calls that should have been made. And there's now going to be a two-part refereeing process - one during the game and one afterwards. And while it is all nice and good to punish the offender afterwards, if I was an opposing fan, I'd be pissed that it wasn't called at the game. Either stand behind your refs' calls, or don't be surprised when people question the fairness of the refs' calls.

But it's not really a surprise coming from a billion-dollar industry that is so cheap it won't even pay for full-time refs.

Least we forget it is run by Roger "Jets" Goodell.

I disagree. Refs should do the best job they can. But sometimes they miss stuff.

If hit was a fineable offense then player should be fined even if the refs missed it. Otherwise the player gets away twice, instead of only once.

They want to fine someone, fine the guy that speared Cassel in the 4th QTR of the Bronco's game.

12:12 left in the 4th QTR - 3rd and 3 and Cassel scrambles up the left. The guy Led with his helmet and the hit was late as well.

Watch that and tell me how that dude does not get a mother of a fine.

I'm not trying to say that the NFL shouldn't try to crack down on the late roughness, but I'm not so sure they are going about it the right way. They should be doing all they can to get those calls made on the field, rather than seeming to create a second process after the fact and after the penalty may have affected the game.

What if you were a Seahawks fan and found out later that the NFL fined a bunch of Steelers for plays from that Super Bowl - calls that if made on the field would possibly have turned around the game. Wouldn't you feel like the NFL isn't doing everything they can to get the best refereeing on the field, during the game, that they possibly can?

I'm thinking a Seahawks fan, in this scenario, would have a lot more to say than that.

I was really surprised a flag wasn't thrown when that happened. But to fine him after the fact when the flag WASN'T tossed just doesn't seem right.

The refs are human they can miss things and if he makes a late hit then he should be fined.
If i walked up and stabbed you in the middle of a bar brawl but the cops were breaking up a six man brawl in the middle i got caught on tape would you want me to get away when there is evidence but no official sighting by a person of power?

Dummie. What was he doing?

No, but if the cops had cameras everywhere and a billion-dollar budget, I'd sure as hell wonder why there wasn't somebody watching the camera at the time who could help the cops on the ground get all of the attackers as it was happening. And while I'd be glad they eventually got the guy, I'd be really pissed if you stabbed someone else on your way out, while the cops in charge of the cameras were too busy counting their money.

if there is a lot going on it is sometime hard to see who's done what until a closer look.

Video officials only come in to play on a challenge or inside the 2 mins they don't call penalties that the job of the guys on the field.

Man Im sick of all these fines from what I remember the hit wasnt bad at all. Is it just me or does it seem like the pats are always taking fines for calls that the refs blew or didnt call during the game ? The way the NFL reviews the games after they have been played is ridiculous. Stop playing Big Brother

Yeah, I know how the system works, it just seems to me that the NFL should be trying to fix the system rather than creating a second one of reviews and fines that highlights the problems of the first.

Just last week we saw how the system screwed the Atlanta Falcons, possibly out of a win. I just think that the NFL can afford a system where we don't have to hear afterwards that the officials screwed up.

Maybe it's just me, and if so, I'll shut up, but I just think that the NFL should take a long, hard look at the referee system that they have and see if there isn't a way that they can improve it so the calls on the field get called and get called the right way. That way, someone getting fined after no penalty was called would be the exception rather than the rule - as it seems to be becoming.

If they are giving fines for every single late hit, then I have no problem with this.

If BJGE received a fine but other people whose late hits were flagged did not, then I don't understand the inconsistency.

I don't understand the fine at all. Yes the hit was late, but it wasn't that late. Browns second foot hadn't come down out of bounds yet. I thought it was not called on the field because the refs (probably correctly) decided that BJGE didn't have time to stop himself. All this is going to do is cause BJGE to slow up the next time and whoever has the ball will fake going out of bounds then blow by him.

I know it is selfish, but i really don't give two hoots if a player gets fined.

If his act results in a penalty that ends a drive or keeps the other teams drive alive then I am pissed. Likewise, I really don't care that Bill and Bob had to fork over some coin because of spygate -- the first round draft pick pissed me off.

For me Wilfork not missing any games was great news. I really don't care how much money it cost him.

It does create a new tier of things...and what is bad is that this tier is being just as inconsistent as the first OR even more so.. I have seen worse hits..more blatant and NO fines..no penalties,,the NFL needs to look at the system of refs..bring it into the 21st century...and make the refs full time. Time for them to study and improve in the off season..

Does he even make $5000 per game?:D

Goodell must go!

This fine is beyond stupid.

It's a freakin' game. Not a criminal enterprise.

I'm sure his intent was anything other than hurting the guy carrying the ball.

Goodell is an idiot.

Fines for a penalty on the field. Ludicrous.

Goodell needs to go.

Yeah, every game there are missed calls that should have been made.

If in doubt in live action, calls should not be made.

While it isn't right for penalties to go uncalled, it is far far worse to penalize a team when they did nothing wrong. That is totally demoralizing and makes players question what they are doing and hesitate that split second that causes a missed tackle, block, etc.
